Watermelons are mostly water — about 92 percent — but this refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients. Each juicy bite has significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C, magnesium, calcium, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids, so when it is hot outside and you are actively losing electrolytes, this is a healthful and very satisfying treat! It actually drenches at the cellular level with just what is needed to keep us going and light on the stomach when you are working hard.
Watermelon Juice Relieves Muscle Soreness and Cramping
A Spanish study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that drinking watermelon juice can actually be quite soothing after a grueling workout. Athletes who consumed a little more than 16 ounces an hour before exercise had less muscle soreness and a lower heart rate within a day.
That may be because watermelon contains a natural substance called citrulline that’s been tied to improved artery function and lower blood pressure.
I first saw a watermelon cut properly at a farmer’s market demo. You will need 2 large bowls, the knife of your choice.
1.) Wash and dry your watermelon.
2.) Cut off both ends. Having it sit flat gives better control! Having it roll all over the place was my biggest problem.
3.) Stand the big guy up one of the flat ends. Cutting the rind off in a downward motion (moving around the melon one section at a time) on your now-stable melon takes so much less effort. It is also less messy.
Finish removing the rind and cut off any remaining white part.
4.) Now, it should be a big whole melon without the rind.
5.) Lay it down and slice it lengthwise into quarters.
Then slice each quarter into cubes as below.
Voilà! Lots of lovely, yummy watermelon to chill and to serve!
