People of many cultures have been using honey and cinnamon to treat disease for centuries.
Folk wisdom still retains knowledge of the healing properties of both raw honey and cinnamon. Both are great alone, but mixing them together increases their power exponentially.
The Fabulous Duo
Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices known to mankind, and honey’s popularity has continued throughout all of history. While excavating Egypt’s famous pyramids, archaeologists have found pots of honey in an ancient tomb. The honey, dating back approximately 3,000 years, is the world’s oldest sample – and still perfectly edible according to National Geographic.
Cinnamon’s essential oils and honey’s enzyme that produces cleansing, purifying hydrogen peroxide qualify the two “anti-microbial” foods with the ability to help stop the growth of bacteria as well as fungi.
This simple mixture has worked well for us, and if we have a cough, we add my No Side-Effect Cough Remedy.
Keeping these two powerhouses on hand in my home-remedy medicine chest is a time saver. I also consider both raw honey and cinnamon to be in the top 10 on my list of preparedness musts.
Obviously, mixing them up is nothing complex; a child could do it in a pinch.
Honey and Cinnamon: A Powerful Duo
If you are diabetic, first read below on the different types (1 or 2) and how it may affect you.
Ingredients and Directions:
- 1 level teaspoon of preferably local raw honey (or this one) True non-processed or previously-heated raw honey should not flow and be thick. (Verify your source)
- 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
- pinch of grey or pink sea salt (such as Redmond’s Real, Celtic, or Himalayan) for the wide array of trace minerals
- you can double or triple this recipe to save time if there are others taking it
- mix thoroughly
What dose? Take 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon two times a day for 3 days for best results. Both honey and cinnamon are anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. If you are diabetic read on to see why this may actually be helpful for you.
This amazing combo will usually knock out a cold within a day or two, no joke!
Cinnamon and Honey for Diabetes???
Cinnamon has an insulin-boosting property (water soluble compounds called polyphenol type A polymers) which have the ability to boost insulin activity about 20 fold and can benefit people who have high sugar levels (obese people, pre-diabetics and diabetics. (Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, 2010 May; 4(3): 685–693).
Also, read the honey hibernation diet theory to find out how honey contributes to the metabolizing of undesirable cholesterol and fatty acid, provides a fueling mechanism for the body, keep blood sugar levels balanced, and let our recovery hormones get on with burning body fat stores.
Consumption of raw honey can reduce risk of developing diabetes and help aid medication used to treat diabetes.
Some Honey & Cinnamon Mixture Benefits
The combination of raw honey and cinnamon can be especially beneficial to healthy blood sugar management, as well as many other health concerns like gingivitis and acne.
Dr. Axe states, “Recent studies published out of the journals Nutrition Research and Pharmacognosy Research suggest that up to 1,500 mg of cinnamon supplementation benefits the lipid profile, liver enzymes, insulin resistance, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in diabetics and people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients (the #1 cause of liver disease in the world).”
According to a study out of Dubai, honey has been observed to cause a lower elevation of plasma glucose levels in diabetics compared to dextrose and sucrose. Some suggest that the insulin boosting power of cinnamon can counteract this glucose elevation in honey, which would make your honey and cinnamon mixture a low glycemic index food!
Raw honey:
- increases insulin
- decreases hyperglycemia
Try consuming a little at a time and see how your blood sugar reacts to it.
Warning for those who are insulin dependent (Type 1):
There are different types of diabetes.
- For folks with type 2 diabetes who are insulin resistant, cinnamon can help the body use the insulin it creates.
- For type 1 diabetes (give themselves insulin through shots or a pump, regulating blood sugar between highs AND lows is a daily battle, so cinnamon isn’t actually going to help all diabetics.
- While honey has many health benefits, helping lower blood sugar is not one of them. And, pairing it with cinnamon, which has many health benefits, will not reduce the amount of insulin needed to process the honey, regardless of how well the pancreas works, because of how fast the body absorbs the concentrated sugar content of the honey.
- However, honey can be very helpful in treating LOW blood sugar (hypoglycemia), because of it’s high sugar content.
- Low blood sugar is rarely an issue for patients with type 2 diabetes if they have not become insulin dependent.
- And this is not guaranteed to help everyone. We are all individual complexities!
- Consult your doctor!
Other Benefits of honey and cinnamon according to NaturalNews.com:
- Drinking honey and cinnamon results in them moving through the bladder and destroy the bacteria in the urinary system. Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and half a teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink.
- Drinking this beverage on a regular basis can also relieve arthritis pain, and in some cases, entirely cure it.
- This mixture strengthens the immune system, helping fight colds as well as some viruses. Make a glass of lukewarm honey water mixed with a generous pinch of cinnamon powder to help boost your immune system during the cold season. It is also helpful in clearing the sinuses.
- Regular consumption of honey and cinnamon together, when combined with an overall healthy diet and moderate activity level, can prevent heart disease by clearing clogged arteries.
- Applying a paste of honey and cinnamon on a gauze pad to infected gums can ease pain and bleeding as well as slow the progression of the infection.
- Honey and cinnamon also provide energy, making people more mentally alert and ready for physical activity which in turn increases the metabolism.
- When consumed together, honey and cinnamon can ease digestion, helping to prevent gas.
Warning: do not give this to infants under the age of one year.
Coffee-lovers – consider adding cinnamon and honey to your brew and then drink a big glass of water! Coffee is very dehydrating, but I digress…maybe I’ll talk about that in another post 🙂
Remember local honey is best because you get local pollen content, and that will help you fight things you are allergic to in your area.
We personally use only raw, local honey.

How timely! The Lord works that way, though, doesn’t He? My husband has a kidney infection today. I’m off to mix up the honey and cinnamon. Thanks!
Toni
Pam
Did this work for the kidney infection I am very sick with one now. What kind of cinnamon do you use just cinnamon from the grocery store!
Jacqueline
Pam, I hope Toni sees your question, but in the meantime, I would direct you to this article: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/04/20/a-simple-natural-treatment-for-urinary-tract-health.aspx
I use D-mannose with good success for UTIs all the time and I combine it with Cranactin capsules. These 2 work well together: there is a product that combines the 2 I’ve been using: http://amzn.to/29NkN2Q
Praying you get well fast! Blessings!
Anna @ Feminine Adventures
Love this! I’ve been using honey and garlic, which is effective but doesn’t sound nearly as tasty as this! I’m going to go mix some up right now. Yummy!
Leanne
I’ve been taking a spoonful of raw honey with cinnamon, followed by 16 ounces of water right before bed for a few weeks now to aid with weight loss. I’ve been trying to lose weight, and I hit a plateau, but the honey and cinnamon helped me get through it without extra dieting and exercise that I’m already doing. Awesome to know it has so many benefits!

I have lupus.. wondering if this would help.. I have no immune system to speak of, joint pain, tired, etc.. lots to lupus.. also started the change.. which doesn’t get along well with lupus, so I am very interested in natural help, especially since I stopped taking meds a few years ago because of the cost. Does the honey and cinnamon have to be together? Can I have honey tea and cinnamon toast?
Jacqueline
Anita,
I don’t know if there is anything special about them being mixed together, but I know many things are more effective when taken with another certain thing. I would and follow it with water. Also, when you mentioned the lupus, it made me think to share virgin coconut oil (up to 5 TBSP/day) as well as bone broth from grass-fed cow’s bones or pastured totally free-range chickens
I had a dx of lupus when I was 50 and we began grazing Belted Galloway cattle and finishing them with no grain on lush spring grass or fall grass pasture. We made broth form the bones and I had it almost every day or pastured chicken broth and eggs. Raw milk and cheese. It got so much better and now I have little pain if any except when I’ve pushed too hard.
I will pray for you, dearie!! May the Lord God grant you wisdom and peace as He leads you in it. Blessings and a hug!

Thank you! I was hoping when I quit work in Dec to make a big improvement.. but stress and cold have me worse than I was.. I wrote this down, and will get things as I can. Right now I am sitting at the computer with my toes against a kero heater because I ran out of fuel yesterday! Brr.. it was cold in PA this morning 🙂 Waiting for a propane delivery then I can light the oven too! I can’t wait to bake.. have been out a while.
Jacqueline
Oh, Anita,
I am praying for you sweet friend. I am sorry you ran out of propane and are now so cold. What a time of year to run out, too! Do please be careful of fire with the heater…I am praying right now that you will improve and that heat will be back on soon! “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” ~Proverbs 18:10
Love,
Jacqueline
anita
Thank you my dear friend. I only use the kero heater when I am right here.. it keeps it toasty downstairs. I got gas for the stove so can cook again, but can’t get the fuel oil for heat because they have a minimun 150 gallons for delivery and I can’t do that! But the kero helps and I will bake a lot so the oven will be on. I keep busy and wrap up in a shawl so it’s not so bad. Spring is coming! Thank you for your prayers.!

Good to know! I’m pinning this!

Off Subject ~ Was it you that posted a link about and where we could order Black Salve? It was a good treatment for skin cancer. If so could you post it again, if not Ooops, wrong blog!
Jacqueline
Hi, Cindy,
I found something that may be helpful by googling ‘black salve for skin cancer blog’:http://thetruthergirls.wordpress.com/2011/06/24/black-salve/
I am not recommending it, but it is interesting. God bless you!
Cindy B
Thanks……I will check it out.
Debra Schramm
Three times I have mixed up a small batch (1/2 cup) of raw local honey and cinnamon. I thoroughly wisk it together and after a short while (couple of hours) a layer seperates on top, almost foamy like. I don’t know if I should scrape it off or mix it back in. The last time it was quite a thick layer so I didn’t want to waste it.
Any suggestions?
Jacqueline
Debra, Hello!
Good question, Debra! I think I have an answer for you…truly raw honey will often have a bubbly whitish layer on top (up to 1/2″). Remember that true raw is slightly cream colored and can’t flow most of the year unless your house gets up into the 90s. The skim on the top can grow slightly with the months and to my eye looks ‘alive’! I once upon a time thought that it was bad, but the aroma was heavenly and the scientist in me wanted to know, so I watch and kept smelling, and finally tasted. This top layer was the sweetest and most delectable rich honey of all. I have now read that it is enzymatic action that is happening and is a sign of active enzymes (really the best healing part), so when it is mixed with your cinnamon, I would smell it first (it should be fresh and sweet) stir it back in. Good health to you, friend!
PS you can see the enzyme activity I am talking about in the honey jar in my top photo!
Lisa
This is so timely, Jacqueline! Thank you so much for all the good remedy ideas you share here…such a blessing to all of us! As you might know if you’ve looked around my blog at all, I get a thrill from finding homemade versions, methods, remedies, etc., and with my 14 yo ds down with a cold (he’s using goldenseal, echinacea, and thieves EO and doing well), I’m eager to try your recommendation of the raw honey and cinnamon.
Blessings to you and yours!
~Lisa 🙂
Jacqueline
Lisa,
I am sorry to hear about your son being ill. I’m hoping he’s all better by now. We also use goldenseal, but if we use it over 10 days we need to sue probiotics to build up the good gut bacteria once again. I’m thinking about blending my own thieves. I love that you comment so often…I’m not so faithful 🙁
Cindy
I’ve never used raw honey before. Does it mix up with the cinnamon without being heated? The picture looks like it might be a hot mix.
Thanks so much.
Lisa Lynn
And it looks yummy too! Thanks so much for sharing this on The HomeAcre Hop! Hope to see you tomorrow for a special hop and a giveaway announcement! 🙂

This really worked when I thought I was catching a cold. Did not know to do it all the time. Also I cut up home grown clove of garlic and swallowed like a pill. So far no aggressive virus yet.
One thing we did this year is cut up an onion and put it in our bedrooms. They are suppose to collect viruses that are in the air and if you are sick. Do not know if this is really true, but so far so good. I now do not use any left over chopped onions either just in case it is true. I chop and use immediately. I freeze any that is left over right after chopping.
Jacqueline
Nina, I hope to do some research on the onion tip! Fascinating…appeals to the scientist in me to lean more of these things 🙂 You are so kind to share that with me…who knows, maybe I will have to do a post on it if there is validity to it 🙂 Blessings and peace to you!
Judith
This is so good!! What do you think of honey on homemade toast? I’ve been eating honey and toast for breakfast lately and feeling guilty to be starting my day off with a form of sugar. Would this work for reducing arthritis and warding off viruses?
Thanks for linking up with WholeHearted Home.
Jacqueline
Yes, to both of your questions. I think there is a link to substantiate both things in the post. On toast? Very good, but you may want to think about using Ezekiel bread or some sprouted grain bread so you can absorb the nutrients in the honey (phytic acid in most breads- see my post on soaking grains). You might also want to supplement with a good protein source and possibly some form of fruit. Love to you, dearie. I’ll be linking up today, maybe 🙂

Cinnamon and Honey! I have heard many good things about them! Please consider sharing it with us at Eco-Kids Tuesday! http://likemamalikedaughter.blogspot.com/2013/03/nifty-thrifting-at-eco-kids-tuesday.html

I love the Lord. I love teaching. I love learning. I love health. I love to help my family. We have bought some property- lots of it and raw. We are wanting to learn how to really garden and have been listening to “Back to Eden…” and on this site we found yours. I have a bad cough, my son has a bad cough…it has been ongoing…and last night i was frustrated with what is probably hurting us in the cough medicine we have been taking….sooooooo THANK YOU!!! I am on my way to make this cough syrup right now! A book you may enjoy, if you haven’t already read it is, “What the Bible Says About Healthy Living”- by Rex Russell, M.D.
Blessings!
Ann
Just found your blog today. What a great way to start my Tuesday!
carlo menichini
yesterday I tried for the first time to boil 1 cup of water, add cinnamon powder and wait for it to cool down to add honey.
With my surprise I saw that cinnamon once mixed with how water turns into a jelly like ” Blob” do I add more water to make it more fluid, do I drink it like that?
Can you please tell me what quantities to use I just bought raw cinnamon and I have been drinking the infuse just now .. it is delicious!
Thank you,
Carlo
Jacqueline
Hello, Carlo!
I’m glad you like it! I don’t boil the cinnamon in water. I just mix the two ingredients together: One teaspoon of preferably local raw honey and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon will usually knock out a cold within a day or two. Hope that helps!
carlo menichini
I did it ! however another way I take cinnamon is mixing it with yogurt before going to sleep, it helps me to stay a sleep and to fall asleep rapidly, strange but true, has anyone experienced this before or is just me?
Jacqueline
Carlo, that is really different, but they say a bit of honey at bedtime is awesome for the liver and maintaining glycogen stores when the liver is at its peak of workload! I wonder if the yogurt acts like warm milk with higher tryptophan levels which could be sleep inducing! I might try this with my husband! Fabulous!
Thank you…blessings to you!

Jacqueline,
Thank you for a refreshing blog laced through with our Creator, The Ancient of Days!!
True wisdom does come as all good gifts from Our Heavenly Father. I have been using raw local honey and cinnamon on and off for years. If I remain steadfast it really pays off!! I am using daily: 2 Tsp ACV, dash of cayenne, dash of cinnamon, 2 Tsps lemon juice in 16 ozs. of water as my morning beverage. I do not feel cravings for food and eat only when I am truly hungry. I take coffee with a tablespoon of coconut oil and honey or not. Thanks again for this wonderful blog and pray continued blessings on your generosity in sharing all the wonderful tips.
Jacqueline
That encouragement is such a blessing to me, Sharon! Praise God for His amazing faithfulness and love! May the Lord bless you and yours richly 🙂
Sharon L
Thank you!
marilyn
I boiled 3 cups water added 1 tsp cinnamon, stirred a lot, then added 3 tsp honey. the cinnamon was too much–my question–can this be mixed with tea? I really want to use this remedy but the cinnamon was very strong for me. I have the impression that the combination of the two is required in order for it to have to full effect. Do you have to heat it up. HELP
jay
I’ve been doing this a few days now, I make coffee and put the cinnamon and honey in. After a lil bit it seems to settle on the bottom. .should I drink it faster?
Jacqueline
Hi, Jay,
If it is quite hot, it will melt, but if it has set and has cooled, yes, it will separate. I do a bit of stirring as I hate to kill the enzyme with the heat. Blessings!
Rose Lee
This is a lovely site, beautiful, interesting and helpful. I’m about to send the link to my daughter. Thank you.
Jacqueline
Thank you, Rose Lee! You made my day and God bless you, new friend 🙂
Tijani
I was sick And I went to clinic the doctor told me that I had kidney infection he gave me medicine And now I’m not feeling the pains i was feeling before, Please I won’t know if i can use cinnamon to cure the infection on my kidney, if yes then pleas teach me how to use cinnamon to treat kidney infection .. Thank you
Jacqueline
Tijani,
I don’t think honey and cinnamon are any good for a kidney infection. I am praying that you find a good alternative doctor very soon and for healing, friend.
Michelle L.
Just came upon your website and wow thank you for some wonderful info. I am wondering if I made a big batch would it keep in the refrigerator? Or does it not need refrigeration? That way I always have it on hand. Also since honey and cinnamon have such amazing properties could I take this every morning with My Other meds as a preventative measure? I have GERD really bad. I just stopped taking my Prevacid 7 days ago and have replaced it with ACV mixed in my liquid vitamins. So far, so good. No heartburn. It’s not tasty and it will take some time getting used too. Lol
Jacqueline
Yes, Michelle, It will be stiff, but refrigeration won’t be a problem. I wish you well with the ACV! It works so well for so many.
Blessings!
Nicole
Do you think I could get away with mixing a small jar of honey and cinnamon together just to keep on hand?
Jacqueline
Nicole! Yes, that is a wonderful idea! We have done that for years, and it is wonderful in warm tea! LOTS of cinnamon! ~J
Geri
Well, I had been coughing for several days and spit up odious dark yuk. I won’t even use the word. Took cinnamon and honey 5x the first day, 3x the second day after each cough and today spit up nearly clear. Chest area feels much lighter, too. I will stick with this for future coughs and my DIL was quite interested to hear of this for her kiddos. Thanks for all you share with us. God bless and keep you.
Jacqueline
Geri, friend,
I am thankful the honey and cinnamon is helping you! I love that your daughter is also going to use natural means for their family!
That is a blessing long term – to replace pharma’s solutions!
Happy New year and I send you all peace,
Jacque
Debbie
I sooo love your site! You are a wealth of extremely helpful info! Thank you!! Like you have encouraged us to do I am printing out some of the info and sometimes emailing it to others. Your format of being able to cut out pictures really helps with ink and paper expenses, even though I would prefer to keep all the pics. Recently, I haven’t been able to put in pdf form or email. Has your format changed or is it my computer system? Also, wanted to receive your master subscription email but it never came to inbox or spam. Thank you again for all you do! (Private note)
Jacqueline
Hi, Debbie,
I do believe it is all working, but there is one way to check: Go to another browser and do the same things there, and I believe it will work for you.
We are finding it is usually on the readers’ end.
Please let me know here, though, if it is still an issue, and then I will assume it needs to be looked over by my web helper! I need to get them involved if it is an issue on this end as it is not in my wheelhouse!
For the master email, try this link again or try it in another browser: https://deeprootsathome.com/trs/ It works when I click it and enter my won name. Thanks!
Thank you for the feedback and encouragement! You are so kind and I can get to feeling isolated from time to time!
Sending peace,
Jacque
Debbie
Hello Jacque! Thank you for your quick reply! I followed your advice to try a different browser with no success. I then waited to get my techy son to try it on his computer. He wondered if your site was recently updated as it appears the print/pdf/email may be on the same activation key. Then it would only run the first line of code (print) and not the others (pdf and email). I think that is how he said it -this stuff is not in my wheelhouse either, lol.
Again, thank you so much for sharing all your hard work, research, experience, advice and wisdom. I greatly appreciate it and YOU!
Jacqueline
Debbie, I am so sorry that you are encountering those problems with the PDF and email portals.
I just sent a request for my web helper to check on that. Your feedback is so helpful so we can look for the issue!
You are a blessing!
Do check back soon and hopefully it will be fixed soon!
Warmly,
Jacque
