I am delighted to introduce Rebecca Hickman, dressmaker extraordinaire for little ladies:
Modiste Originals began in 2010 when I decided I wanted to make traditional little girl’s clothing – pinafores, bloomers – clothing that let little girls look like and be little girls. The lack of sweet, innocent, and feminine clothing for little girls is something that greets me every time I go shopping, and I wanted to do what I could to change that. Hence, Modiste Originals was born.
I struggled for a while to decide on a name for my little business when I stumbled upon a word in a book on the history of fashion. That word was “modiste.” Modiste is the French word for “dressmaker” and it makes a nice play on the word “modest” which is at the core of my designs.
Why Modiste Originals
I draw my inspiration for my clothing from my two little ladies (Olivia, 3 and Kate, 16 months) and classic children’s garments of the past while also incorporating the best elements of current fashion. The end result is something that is beautiful, modest, and feminine, but comfortable, functional and fun to wear at the same time.
There are no itchies in my dresses. Almost every piece is machine washable and hang-to-dry, so that makes garment care easier on the mommies.
All seams are finished and each piece is full of tiny details. I use high quality fabrics that are beautiful but not commonplace to create unique, limited quantity items. I try to offer dresses in as many sizes as possible—usually from size 3/6 months to a girl’s size 10.
I have a Dress of the Month every month as well as special releases throughout each month. I offer smocked and heirloom clothing on a custom basis.
I enjoy using patterns from independent designers—most of the time from other stay-at-home moms.
I love to sew and creating beautiful clothing gives me so much satisfaction. I’ve designed and created a broad range of garments from smocked dresses to denim skirts to bridesmaids’ dresses and formals. But now my focus is back where my passion has always been: little girl fashion.
I am a very blessed stay-at-home wife to Jacob, my sweetheart of nearly seven years, and mommy to Livie and Kate, and a baby boy arriving in August. I love the freedom that comes with having my business. I get to do what I love while being with the people I love the most.
I’ve made almost all of my clothing since I was fourteen and learned to sew from my mother. I didn’t realize until I was older and making my wedding gown what a truly great gift she gave me. My taste in clothing has always been a little different from mainstream fashion so my ability to sew my own clothing has helped me create my own look and dress to my preferences.
