You’d hardly expect to find old St. Nicholas in a prison. But St. Nicholas is more than a children’s Christmas legend. Indeed, he was real flesh and blood, a persecuted prisoner for Christ, the bishop of the Mediterranean city of Myra….
There is a beginning to every story, some more fascinating than others:
It was a beautiful afternoon – until Charles Mully, the owner of Mullyways Agencies, reached the spot where his luxury car should have been. Only shards of glass remained.
Have you recently thought much about who your neighbor is or the parable of the Good Samaritan?
Jim O’Connor did. But, no one would suspect; he has a reputation as a gruff algebra and calculus teacher.
The Time Spurgeon Almost Quit
At the age of twenty-two, Charles Spurgeon almost quit the ministry.
He and his wife, Susannah, had been married less than one year. Their twin sons, Charles and Thomas, were infants. After three years in the big city, Spurgeon’s ministry had solicited envy from his opponents, admiration from the evangelicals, and criticism from the press. Susannah often hid the morning newspaper to prevent Charles from reading its headlines.
The evening of October 19, 1856 commenced a season of unusual suffering for Spurgeon. His popularity had forced the rental of the Surrey Garden Music Hall [London] to hold the 12,000 people congregated inside. Ten thousand eager listeners stood outside the building, scrambling to hear his sermon. The event constituted one of the largest crowds gathered to hear a nonconformist preacher — a throwback to the days of George Whitefield.

This is why local elections are majorly important! Constitutionally-minded, local officials are our first line of defense against an encroaching, overbearing government.
However, as a freedom-loving homemaker (and mom to a 23-year old beginning crop farmer), I am thankful for heroic public servants like Sheriff Rogers willing to stand up to unscrupulous and unConstitutional harassment such as this. We need more small farmers.
Author’s Caveat: This post is in no way a blanket endorsement of the the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Parents will need to determine the maturity level of their children. Since these fantasies include magic, violence, and extreme adventure, I strongly encourage parents to learn for themselves the content of each story before sharing with a child as each family has different convictions of what is acceptable. By 18 years, our young adults were ready for a full appreciation of the books and movies, but I have to say that when Hollywood takes hold of any great work, elements of darkness are added into it that were not intended in the original work. Some things are “meant to be read and to be at our own imagination”, so it is the books I primarily recommend, to be read and chewed upon for a while. First and foremost, we measure everything by the Word of God, using wisdom given to us by the Holy Spirit.
Though maybe not a widely held view (but a controversial one), I believe that J.R.R. Tolkien’s vastly popular creative life work makes a significant contribution to today’s Christian theological discussion, most especially with regard to the purpose of the Christian life and our role in pointing others to faith in Jesus Christ….
