Lion’s Mane mushrooms is one of the top functional foods. It is not a psychedelic or hallucinogenic mushroom. It has impressive health benefits well beyond its nutritional value that can serve us all.
Never before have we seen neuro-degenerative and cognitive decline in people as young as we are today. And it’s not surprising since these popular medications commonly cause peripheral nerve damage at ANY age! Therefore, it’s important to start taking steps to safeguard our brains and nervous systems from common lifestyle offenders and to keep us mentally youthful and vibrant.
It’s interesting that, once again, we find significant cellular healing in something as simple as a weird-looking forest mushroom from God’s created world.
If you have nerve pain: burning, tingling, or numb feet, hands or elsewhere, or know someone who does, this is for you.
Discover how lion’s mane prevents the death of neurons, reverses the damage, and regenerates neuronal pathways.
Lion’s mane mushroom’s rich neuro-protective and restorative benefits:
The functional medicine practice of Dr. John Coppola and Dr. Valerie Monteiro specializes in various types of nerve damage and pain. They have lots of success with lion’s mane. Near the end of the post, Dr. M discusses the product they recommend in their practice and the dosage to prevent thinning of the blood in those on blood thinners.

Video timestamp. Lion’s Mane Mushroom:
00:38: has AMAZING ability to improve cognitive health and alleviate peripheral nephropathy
2:38: can reverse effects on nerve injuries in both the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
3:00: contains oligosaccarides which act as prebiotics for your gut
5:29: promotes remyelination of nerves
9:15: discussing dosage and a specific supplement of theirs to maximize neurologic healing.
Dr. Coppola and Dr. Monteiro did a trial run to see how well 1000 mg. of Lion’s Mane performed independently without the other critical nutrients. They found that, although Lion’s Mane showed benefit with peripheral neuropathy, it wasn’t potent enough to stand alone and potentiate maximum nerve repair and regeneration. That is why they formulated their Nuphoria cm® Gold Nerve Support Formula mentioned at (9:15) in the video. The San Antonio Neuropathy Center does take calls for questions.
But you can always incorporate Lion’s mane into your daily supplements for it’s wide benefits – even if not targeting peripheral neuropathy. These 2 products are what I am using: Organic Lions Mane Mushroom Powder and Organic Mushroom Powder Supplement – 10 in 1 Active Blend. I make a delicious ‘coffee-like’ latte and top it off with fresh raw whole milk.
A study published in Mycology shows that Lion’s mane mushroom synthesizes two very important compounds for nerve growth – Hericenones and erinacines. These compounds are derived from the fruiting body and mycelium of the mushroom. Both compounds promote the biosynthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF) and therefore have value in the prevention and treatment of dementia.
Interestingly, both the Hericenones and erinacines are low-molecular weight compounds that cross the blood-brain barrier with ease. The lion’s mane mushroom was designed at the molecular level to positively affect the brain and heal the nervous system, promoting peripheral nerve regeneration and advancing learning abilities into old age.
It is safe in pregnancy, according to Andrew Weil, MD.
High blood sugar levels harden arteries, increasing risk of dementia
When treating dementia, it’s equally important to eliminate the chemicals that are promoting cognitive decline. High blood sugar levels are known to harden the arteries, increasing the risk of blockages in the brain. Obstruction of blood flow to the brain can inhibit blood supply to the nerve cells, resulting in impaired brain function.
This study found an association between regular consumption of sugary beverages and dementia risk. The free sugars in soda and fruit drinks were strongly related to dementia risk, while the sugars in tea and coffee showed minimal risk.
Herbal teas – including green tea, rooibos, chamomile, lavender, lemon balm and more– are all wonderful alternatives to sugar-laden drinks. These beverages, when sweetened with plant-based stevia extract, also provide the body with antioxidants and polyphenols that fight free radicals and therefore protect the brain.
Dementia doesn’t have to plague or dumb down our population. Advanced learning can continue into old age. Functional foods like lion’s mane mushroom, virgin coconut oil, turmeric, and virgin cod liver oil can heal damaged neurons while promoting new neuron growth.

Thanks for the article. I’m interested in trying it but I’m confused if you are saying the product advertised is the only way to get the benefits of lion’s mane. It said something about it not being effective for peripheral neuropathy. It was just a little confusing if you meant it was helpful for other things without that formula.

Hi, Marilyn,
I added this (with links) that may be helpful! “But you can incorporate Lion’s mane into your daily supplements for it’s wide benefits – even if not targeting peripheral neuropathy.
