Adding Baking Soda (Bicarbonate) to Cancer Protocols

Dr. Mark Sircus, a physician in Brazil, explains why sodium bicarbonate (also called baking soda) is vital for any cancer patient. Since he put forth his findings, he has been thoroughly confirmed, although many allopathic oncologists fail to make use of this most basic knowledge.

[You can share this with your oncologist or do this at home.]

“In terms of importance, appropriate bicarbonate levels are just as crucial as hydration, getting enough oxygen, staying warm, maintaining healthy pH (high oxygen status) and optimal nutrition.

“Simple baking soda is the ideal medicine for mitigating radiation exposure. It helps clear the kidneys of uranium toxicity. It certainly has been used when chemotherapy is administered and during cardiac arrest. It is also the treatment of choice for fungal infections (the study). It is an excellent antiviral, pulling the rug out from under the little critters that are sensitive to pH changes. Most viruses are pH-sensitive.”

“I am not suggesting that anyone should follow Dr. Tullio Simoncini’s bicarbonate treatments administered intravenously. There is little flexibility in the blood for pH changes. Simoncini got into serious trouble for over-alkalizing the blood of a patient, a condition that easily ends in death. Using oral and transdermal administration is preferable not only because of safety issues but also because one can get bicarbonate to all the cells in the body, which is impossible if one adds bicarbonate directly into the blood.”

Breakthrough Bicarbonate Cancer Research

Now we have more exciting reasons to focus on bicarbonate therapy for cancer.

A recent Ludwig Cancer Research study, led by Chi Van Dang, M.D., Ph.D., shows that, “ONLY cancer cells that remain active (awake and in sympathy with the tick-tock of their internal circadian mechanisms) are susceptible to cancer therapies.”

The study confirms that sodium bicarbonate awakens cancer cells that have gone to sleep deep inside tumors, where oxygen deprivation and acidic conditions dominate. By buffering against acidification, sodium bicarbonate restores normal circadian rhythm (undoing the cancer’s internal circadian rhythm).

This is relevant because cancer researchers have long known that quiescent (sleeping) cells typically CANNOT be killed by chemotherapy. (source)

That something as simple as baking soda could render quiescent cancer cells susceptible to cancer therapies excites researchers. Thus it is time for mainstream oncologists to wake up to what medical science has to say about bicarbonates.

“The concept is so easy. It’s not some $100,000 per year drug. It’s literally just baking soda.” ~Chi Van Dang, M.D., PhD.

Cancer and pH: Alkalinizing Sodium Bicarbonate Shrinks Tumors

Dr. Mark Sircus continues:

“Virtually every cancer patient will benefit from the use of sodium bicarbonate because it treats the low oxygen acid conditions universally found in cancer patients.

“Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) shrinks tumors and has been found to reverse the pH of tumor micro-environment and inhibit the invasion, metastasis, immune evasion, drug resistance and hypoxia of tumor cells.  (source)

And bicarbonate inhibits spontaneous metastases (Robey 2009).

“A hallmark of all tumors, regardless of their origin or background, is their acidic environment. In fact, tumor progression increased with an acidic pH,” writes Dr. Veronique Desaulniers.

“The results of this study suggests that tumor cells perform niche engineering by creating an acidic environment that is non-toxic to the malignant cells but promotes local invasion.” Tumor invasion DID NOT occur into regions with normal or near-normal pH.

“NaHCO3 therapy also reduced the rate of lymph node involvement and significantly reduced the formation of hepatic (liver) metastases.

Cancer, Infections and Baking Soda

Oncologist Dr. Tullio Simoncini was persecuted for his use of sodium bicarbonate for cancer patients because he pointed to the relationship between cancer and fungus. Cancer—always believed to be caused by genetic cell mutations—can in reality be caused by infections from viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

Dr. Andrew Dannenberg (in a speech at an international conference of the American Association for Cancer Research) stated: “I believe that, conservatively, 15 to 20% of all cancer is caused by infections.” It’s another reason to treat cancer with a bicarbonate, which has strong anti-infection effects.

There is just too much benefit and practically zero downside to bicarbonates. Bicarbonate has long been used in ICU, emergency departments and in ambulances. There is no reason it should not be employed for all cancer patients.

[The original article contains a much more technical discussion of bicarbonate therapy, circadian rhythm, and cancer than I’ve covered here.]

Adult Dose Baking Soda for Urinary Alkalinization. Drugs.com gives this dosing:

• 325 to 2000 mg. orally 1 to 4 times a day. (That is a very wide range and will depend on the patient and their doctor’s goal.)

(In our home with 2 kidney patients, we use 1/2 teaspoon (more or less) of this Nutricost sodium bicarbonate (only once/day in enough water to drink it down) when we get up to go to the bathroom anytime in the middle of the night so it doesn’t compromise stomach acid during a meal.

The goal of therapy is to correct serum pH and increase the urinary pH to between 6.4-6.8. it will usually only take a couple days, but needs to be done daily!

If the increase in urinary pH is not adequate, slightly increase the sodium bicarbonate till you achieve the right pH.

Measuring your pH is a very simple way of monitoring the internal dynamics of your health on a cellular level. My kidney doctor told me that “6.8 is perfect and to work to keep it there”.

How To Monitor Your pH:

The most accurate way to check your urine pH is to check it first thing in the morning, upon arising. Urinate in a small cup (or run the paper or strip quickly through the stream of urine) and immediately “read” the pH of the urine on the strip and record it. Or before you brush your teeth or drink water, spit on a pH strip and record your salivary pH.

Ideally, a healthy and balanced saliva pH should be between 7.0 to 7.5, and the urine pH should be between 6.4 – 6.8. (source)

Dr. Sircus recommends pH ADJUST (always sold out now) or simple sodium bicarbonate to increase salivary and urinary pH and counteract overly acidic conditions in the digestive tract, blood, and kidneys.

What is the recommended daily dosage of baking soda, and how many times a day should it be taken when one has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy treatment? Also, what is the desirable ph in morning urine and saliva? I see differing numbers in the blog and in the linked article.

Hi, Heather, one should take a serving of pH Adjust. Each serving (the product specifies about ½ scoop, and Dr. Sircus states that is about ¼ tsp) contains about 300 mg of bicarbonate, 260 mg of carbonate, 142 mg of potassium, 105 mg of magnesium, 48 mg of sodium, and 100 mg of glycine. to start and keep monitoring your pH with strips to bring it into the proper pH. It can take a few days or weeks to titrate the desired numbers, but many have been doing it around the world for decades.
“Ideally, a healthy and balanced saliva pH should be between 7.0 to 7.5, and the urine should be between 6.4 – 6.8.”
Although the pH of the body will fluctuate with meals, exercise, stress, hormones and sleep, a healthy and balanced saliva pH should be between 7.0 to 7.5.
You could also get his sodium Bicarb e-book, and I linked that in to the post.
I hope that helps and am praying for your Mom!

I read this post several days ago, and bought the pH test strips linked to. Is anyone else having difficulty reading them correctly? The paper is such a dark color and when wetted by spit or urine, it just gets a wet spot on it and I can’t tell the actual color of the result to compare. I feel that I have wasted my money on a product that is poorly designed.
Also, do you know if having a yeast infection (results of taking meds that remove sugar from the body due to diabetes) will alter the results of both spit and urine?

      Hi, Carol,
I am sorry you are not pleased with them or find them difficult to read. They are pretty much the standard and used by many with good reviews. It could be the yeast infection or medication, but I don’t know the specific situation or how you are doing the test.. make sure you tear off your strip before using it for a test and take the reading immediately to get the most accurate reading. You can return them for full refund, I believe!
      I hope that helps somewhat,
      Jacqueline
