Today, in most places, political-correctness trumps truth. Some are being targeted for championing truth and paying a huge price.
I’ve often heard people say that Christians aren’t persecuted here in the United States. No, we aren’t suffering in a physical way for our faith, still it isn’t correct to say that Christians here are not being penalized.
Currently, something unthinkable is happening right here in one of the most noted hospitals in the U.S.
And as an RN, this is particularly troubling because people trust the medical profession to protect them – on both the personal and public health levels.
A highly respected and beloved medical doctor is being attacked – expelled from his hospital – for telling the politically-incorrect truth about a serious medical issue. What you are about to read is truly unprofessional and a breach of medical ethics, but this is where we’re headed/where we are in this country. Freedom of speech is effectively dead in America. It has been destroyed by the tyranny of political-correctness.
Bringing forth Truth
After a distinguished 30-year career on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the medical staff of Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), urologist Paul Church, M.D., was expelled from the staff for using the hospital’s communication system to warn of the health risks of homosexual behavior. He has done research on diagnosing prostate and bladder cancer, and has been a frequent volunteer for medical mission projects in Mexico and Africa. He has also spoken before educational and civic groups on the subject of high-risk sexual behaviors.

- Gay Sex Health Risks – Warning: Description of homosexual perversion. Can you handle the truth about homo-sex? Most people can’t, because it is brutal (literally). Contained is a quotation from Dr. Stephen Goldstone, an open homosexual and Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
It was 11 years ago that Dr. Church and other like-minded medical colleagues raised concern with officials over the center’s decision to endorse the homosexual lifestyle by hosting an annual “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Achievement Award ceremony,” as well as to involve staff in LGBT events including participation in Boston’s annual “Gay Pride Week.”
Dr. Church was compelled to speak up further:
“The evidence is irrefutable that behaviors common within the homosexual community are unhealthy and high risk for a host of serious medical consequences, including STD’s, HIV and AIDS, anal cancer, hepatitis, parasitic intestinal infections, and psychiatric disorders,” Church submitted this to officials via the center’s communication system after receiving an LGBT-related communication.
“Life expectancy is significantly decreased as a result of HIV/AIDS, complications from the other health problems, and suicide. This alone should make it reprehensible to the medical community, who has an obligation to promote and model healthy behaviors and lifestyles.”
Dr. Church called it “all together inappropriate” for BIDMC to “endorse, affirm, or encourage the behaviors ‘celebrated’ by Gay Pride Week.”
In April, 2012, Church requested that BIDMC’s communications department not send him further notices regarding LGBT activities. His request was ignored. Between 2013-14 Church continued to receive an ever-increasing number of emails and notices affirmative of the LGBT lifestyle. To one such communication received in 2013 he responded: “Celebrating sexual perversions is highly inappropriate, especially in the context of a medical center that should be aware of the negative health consequences of high risk behaviors. It also ignores and dishonors the religious convictions and moral objections that many members of the hospital community share.”
Dr. Church was not accused of any inappropriate or judgmental interactions with patients, staff, or colleagues. His use of the internal communication system to respond to hospital communications was deemed a violation of “established standards of professional conduct.”
According to Mass Resistance, a pro-family website:
In July 2011, he was called into the Chief of Surgery’s office and told he should consider resigning or else he would face an investigation. He refused to resign. So a few months later a formal “Peer Review Committee” of BIDMC staff physicians was called together to “assess” his “conduct.” He again presented them with the medical facts, which they did not dispute, but ignored. The committee instead sent him a “letter of reprimand” ordering, “You shall have no communications [in any manner, to anyone in the hospital] concerning your opinion about sexual orientation, homosexuality, or other protected status.”
It was an unusual order – that a physician be banned from discussing critical medical facts relating to his expertise, that could affect the health of people the hospital serves.
Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) stated that the Boston Medical Center has a high profile for promoting Gay Pride and LGBT issues. Their 2011 promotional video on “Making it Better” shows many BIDMC employees praising its policies of “inclusiveness” and “diversity.”
“Public education about the risks of smoking or obesity is required, but at BIDMC, teaching the risks associated with the gay lifestyle evidently constitutes ‘discrimination and harassment.’ This led to what amounted to a gag order and Dr. Church’s eventual removal,” concluded AAPS. BIDMC did not attempt to refute Church’s statement since these risks are well known and undisputed, observes AAPS.
“All American physicians need to watch what is happening to Dr. Church (who is not a member of AAPS),” states AAPS executive director Jane Orient. M.D. “The penalty for making a truthful but politically-incorrect statement that ‘may offend’ someone could be the ruin of one’s medical career.”
In March, 2015, BIDMC announced its decision. Dr. Church was informed that because of his “unsolicited views about homosexuality that were offensive to BIDMC Staff,” he was being terminated from the hospital staff. Unbelievably, he was told that that his statements on the subject of gay health risks were “inconsistent with the established standards of professional conduct.”
Is This What the Future Holds?
Consider what 1 Peter says about the suffering of believers: “For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.” ~1 Peter 4: 3-4 (NIV)
Clearly there is persecution. Peter doesn’t use that word, but he is clearly referring to suffering because of one’s faith. In a similar way, today, Christians are maligned and slandered for their beliefs, and they are also verbally abused for not indulging in the same lifestyle as unbelievers.
Likewise, Jesus said to his disciples, “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man!” ~Luke 6:22
Early Christians were maligned, criticized, and rejected for not following the cultural ethics of the Greek and Roman world. In the same way today, many are astonished that biblical Christians have such a “narrow” sexual ethic. We are opposed and even thought harmful to society because we don’t approve the sin that is celebrated in many quarters.
For years, many of us have held our beliefs, the truths of the Word of God in the Bible, to ourselves, perhaps so that we wouldn’t be perceived as judgmental or unloving.
Dr. Church professionally told the medical and moral truth about homosexual behavior and has been persecuted for it. He stood on the Word of God by simply responding with these verses when pressed: Leviticus 18:22 and Romans 1:26-28.
It is one thing for education, big business, or our government to succumb. But when the medical profession values tolerance of the sexual revolution over truth (and health)- denying and silencing the medical truth – it is time for all of us to wake up.
I applaud Dr. Church for being willing to risk his whole medical career over his conviction that certain sexual practices are unhealthy and dangerous to those who engage in them.
