Fresh Water Without Electricity - Bison Hand Pump. Hand pump

If the grid went down today, would you be able to get water without electricity? It is the very first thing you – and everyone else – would need. It’s not a common first-world problem, so we don’t often think of not having enough readily available water to drink, wash hands, flush toilets, do laundry, cook, bathe, and the list goes on.

Unless we know someone who’s been in this uncomfortable situation and had to leave, it’s not usually on our radar. Without electricity, your water faucets will not give you water and neither will your reverse osmosis system. A home can’t really function without a water source.

Water is your most essential need.

Do you have a well? If so, we can recommend a non-electric solution which could keep you in your home if there were ever to be a prolonged lack of power (for any reason).

Water Without Electricity

Even though our only trust is in the Lord Jesus, we have always been preparedness-minded. When we built our home three years ago, we installed a frost-free Bison hand pump over the well casing. We hope to install a shallow well hand pump in the mechanical room, too, so we can pump water in the house and maybe be able to flush toilets when the power is down. After having been without water at the farm several times for long periods and having to leave our home (one was an ice storm for many days), this gives us a certain peace of mind that we can have fresh water without electricity.

construction of well site and landscapingThis is what it looked like right after the installation of the Bison… and before the shrubs were planted in a circle around the rocks we gathered from the field.

These pumps are made in Maine and were developed after that region’s terrible ice storms of ’99 which left many farmers unable to get water to their livestock. Many animals died.

The Bison is frost-free and works in any kind of weather conditions. Many are in use in Canada and in other severe climates around the world to have access to fresh water without electricity.

I want to emphasize that Bison Deep and Shallow Well Hand Pumps can be installed in the same casing as your existing electric submersible or jet pump in nearly any situation. Please give them a call and their sales and technical staff will guide you through your specific installation. We’ve had a good experience with them.

Hi! I’m Jacqueline!

Thanks for being part of this journey with me.
Welcome to my own little place on the internet! Home is where I love to be. I feel there is no greater place to incubate souls. These days you’ll find me using my experiences here to write about herbal remedies and natural health research — a big passion of mine. But being a wife and mother is not easy. It is challenging and potentially lonely. I get that. I wanted to create a place to connect with and support other moms for creating a natural, healthy, and fulfilling home life.

We have a well on our property, but it’s not hooked up to our house! The previous owner took the well-house down and dropped a pipe in the well, and no well company that we have contacted will retrieve it for us. Sigh. So, we have a Black Berkey to filter the water that we pay for at a premium price. I’d love to move even though we love our location. Off-grid sounds like heaven. 😉 I’m pretty sure there won’t be any exorbitant water bills there. Have a great day!

We are hooked up to city water. Our house is so old we probably have a well on the property somewhere, but I don’t have any idea how to find it. Sure would be nice to have for watering my garden/lawn this summer! If we had a well I would definitely want a hand pump for emergencies!

Thanks for putting this idea into my head! Our well is just off the deck in my perennial garden and it would be perfect to have a pump on top!

Nice blog about the need for a good hand pump. We needed a lot of water from a hand pump during last year’s drought to keep our gardens alive. But it couldn’t keep up with the demand. So my husband, being the thoughtful inventor he is, made a deep-well, high-volume hand pump for me. He had no idea he would be breaking records with his pump. What’s important is we now have the water we need no matter what.

Have you heard of the new WaterBuck Pump? My husband can pump 13+ gallons per minute from a deep well and pressurize a tank to water the garden.

It is good to know that you will want to look into getting a hand water well pump that is made of stainless steel. It is good to know that type of metal will stand up to the elements the best. My father wants to get a well put on his property that will make it easier for him to get water to his goats, it seems like a hand pump close to their watering area would be smart. http://www.downrightdrilling.com/services

We used Simple Pump. It was worth every penny. We have our well power on a backup as well but this is a third line of protection. Last summer we had a major wildfire and the grid was down for 13 days. The few houses around us that survived had no water. We did. The Lord blessed my husband’s diligence to be prepared. We have recommended the Simple Pump to our neighbors as well. It’s good to know there are multiple options! (I had no idea as my husband is the one who researched and purchased).
