End Times Prophesy & AI as Seen Through the Book of Revelation

With a giant AI data center proposed to be built near our home, I admit I’ve been thinking a lot about artificial intelligence (AI), and if it could somehow be a part of ushering us into the end times. None of this was on my radar screen 4 months ago.

Artificial intelligence is no longer science fiction. It’s part of daily life. But as AI becomes more powerful, serious spiritual questions have been raised: Is AI the Antichrist? Is AI connected to end times? And how should Christians think about AI?

The renowned author and Oxford mathematician John C. Lennox, who debated Richard Dawkins on ‘the existence of God’ and left Dawkins speechless, warns that future developments in AI could deceive billions – just as foretold in Scripture – engineered by the one Jesus called “the father of lies,” and whom the apostle John identified as “the Antichrist.” In his book ‘God, AI, and the End of History, Understanding the Book of Revelation in an Age of Intelligent Machines‘, he explores the explosive intersection of artificial intelligence, biblical prophecy, the Antichrist, and the end times.

The Bible tells us that in the last days, there’s going to be a world figure that will emerge—the Antichrist, also called the Beast and “the man of lawlessness”. 

This man, the Antichrist, will be a world figure who comes on the scene and ushers in what we often call the great tribulation period. The great tribulation 7-year period will begin with the emergence of Antichrist, and it will end with the return of Jesus Christ. 

But could AI be part of this end times scenario? I think it is very possible.

It grabbed my attention when this pastor, using today’s modern vernacular, alluded to what God’s prophetic word tells us will happen. It is really not far-fetched at all if you put it into the context of technology today.

Is AI Part of End Times Events?

Until this generation, there was very little advancement in AI technology. For 6,000 years people traveled on the earth using the fastest animal they could find, but in one generation everything changed. My Nana born ~1902 once told me that she was 10 before she saw her first automobile; but before she would have been 65, John Glenn had orbited the earth.

The Book of Daniel prophesied that in the end of days knowledge would accelerate and people would be traveling extensively.

“But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”~Daniel 12:4 (ESV)

With the development of quantum computing, micro-engineering, and micro data storage, the science fiction of the past has rapidly become the reality of our present day. Lifelike images with the perception of life have been developed and their realistic behavior and intellect seems to closely mirror human emotions and life. It is getting more difficult, even to the trained eye, to tell if something is real or AI.

The Bible tells us the Antichrist will erect an image of himself and demand worship—and that the image will somehow appear animated or alive: 

“And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed” ~Revelation 13:14–15 (NKJV).

Not too long ago, this all sounded so out there. But now with the advances in robot technology interfaced with AI technology, and more, prophesy we read in Revelation doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

A One-World Government in the End Times

Let’s dive into what God’s Word says about a one-world government —a totalitarian uniting of various powers into a final dictatorial ruler.

The Book of Revelation describes a time when the world will be united under one government, led by a powerful and deceptive ruler known as the Antichrist who will demand loyalty and even worship.

Revelation 13:7-8 (NIV) paints the picture of this new world system this way:

“It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

The Mark of the Beast Using AI?: A Sign of Control

Revelation 13:15-17 (NLT) warns:

“He was then permitted to give life to this statue so that it could speak. Then the statue of the beast commanded that anyone refusing to worship it must die. It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.”

The one world government will control who can buy and sell. Only those who take the mark of the Beast will be able to participate in society. It could refer to a future digital currency, a tracking system (think Flock cameras everywhere), or implanted biometric technology such as the new 2026 Neuralink brain-computer interface or RFID readable chips implanted on the hand.

The Antichrist will use his authority to force people to follow him —he will demand to be worshiped. Instead of bringing peace, he will bring oppression and death and destruction.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 (NIV) is clear in regards to this ‘man of lawlessness’:

“Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.” ~2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

I am just touching on the surface of prophesy contained in the Word of God.

These things must happen before Christ returns…but that doesn’t mean we walk in fear. Watch and pray.
