
Computed Tomography (CT) scans, also known as CAT scans, are remarkably quick, which is fantastic if your doctor needs information right away. A CT scan is the emergency go-to for spotting the extent of internal trauma. But it’s becoming overused, putting patients at future risk. Unnecessary diagnostic imaging remains a substantial problem in the U.S.

A CT scan uses what’s called “ionizing” radiation. (source) It’s powerful enough to pass through your body to create clear images on a computer. This type of radiation could raise your chances of cancer at some point in the future.
A chest X-ray typically exposes a patient to about 0.1 millisieverts (mSv) of radiation. In contrast, a chest CT scan can expose the patient to approximately seven mSv or more, depending on the protocol. (source)
Overuse of the CT Scan Is Very Risky
A multi-institutional group of researchers from The Institute of Cancer Research (London, UK), Kaiser Permanente (WA, USA) and the University of California (CA, USA) have uncovered that the overuse of CT scans in the USA, could contribute to over 100,000 cases of cancer annually, including nearly 10,000 in children. This new study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that CT scans, a known carcinogen, are be linked to a much larger number of future cancer cases than many people expected.
The study estimated that about 93 million computed tomography (CT) scans were performed in the United States in 2023. Researchers projected that they could contribute to about 103,000 future cancer cases since ionizing radiation from CT is a known carcinogen. (source)
Study Conclusions: These findings suggest that if current CT scan radiation dosing and utilization practices continue, CT-associated cancers could eventually account for 5% of all new cancer diagnoses annually. (source)
The projected number of radiation-induced cancers in this analysis is 3 to 4 times higher than the earlier assessment of CT exposure for several reasons.10
Who Gets Affected by CT Scans Most?
Unborn babies in pregnant moms, infants and children face a higher risk per scan because their bodies are still developing and they have more years ahead for radiation-related cancers to appear. Even so, most of the projected cancer cases are expected to occur in adults. This is mainly because adults receive far more CT scans overall. (source)
In adults, the cancers most often predicted from CT-related radiation include lung cancer, colon cancer, leukemia, and bladder cancer. (source) In children, the study pointed to future thyroid, lung, and breast cancers as important concerns.
Abdomen and pelvis CT were projected to cause the greatest number of cancers. These and other examination types, such as high-dose abdomen and pelvis, full body, and spine CT, incur greater risks on average per examination because they frequently use multiple scan phases that result in higher doses.29,30 Often these examinations could use single-phase scanning, which would lower doses without impacting diagnostic accuracy.
The main message is that doctors should order CT scans thoughtfully and carefully, avoid or refuse ordering scans that are not medically necessary – and when it is necessary, use the lowest radiation dose that still gives useful images.

Can One Protect From Ionizing Radiation After a CT Scan?
Yes.
Clinoptilolite zeolites (CZ) such as Advanced TRS are simply very, very tiny crystalline minerals which have the remarkable ability to absorb radioactive radium, strontium, cesium and more.[11] Nuclear waste is typically “cleaned” or “stored” in the environment by mixing it with zeolite and packing it underground. Zeolites can attach themselves to and remove nuclear waste at the molecular level.[12]
Perhaps the best evidence proving that CZ helps detoxification of radiation was its widespread usage in the nuclear meltdowns at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and the British Nuclear Fuels (BNF) plant at Sellafield, where it is used to absorb radioactive materials from walls and floors.[14] US nuclear weapons facilities use zeolites to line walls and floors to prevent toxicity.
Advanced TRS, a clinoptilolite nanozeolite in purified water, can also be taken internally for detoxing after radiation exposure. Specifically, clinoptilolite zeolite (CZ) has been used for detoxing post-radiation. It was given in cookies and pills to counteract Chernobyl’s fallout. And one study found that Zeolite was an effective decontaminant for sheep affected by the nuclear waste disaster in Scotland after Chernobyl.[13]
I do not claim that Advanced TRS, a pure clinoptilolite zeolite (CZ), can adsorb all ionizing radiation. However, due to the widespread use of CZ in nuclear events with severe radiation exposure, we upped my husband’s normal daily number of TRS sprays to a whole 150-spray bottle (divided into thirds with good hydration) right after an emergency abdominal/pelvic CT scan. We both have taken TRS daily for years (since 2019) because I distribute TRS, so after the resulting surgery, he consumed 2 more bottles of TRS in 2 weeks before going back to his normal 5 sprays a day. He is fully back to work here on the farm and expanding our small grass-fed cattle operation. I am comfortable that I have done all I can do to mitigate much of that radiation and harm from the plethora of pharma drugs he was given.
Lastly, CT scans often involve the use of a contrast agent, so I wanted to chelate that out, too, similar to how we bind out MRI contrast gadolinium using TRS.
