How I Wash Produce & Kill Parasitic Eggs, Listeria & E. Coli

Practicing good food hygiene is a powerful health habit. One thing you may not know about me is that I’m just a bit OCD about washing my produce. Ever since our kids were little, I’ve wash all our fresh produce faithfully, and it’s paid off for our health.

In light of the current cyclospora outbreak, I set out to research what can kill the parasite while continuing to wash my produce with my Safrax Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) product.

With a quick 5-10 minute produce soak using this effervescent Safrax ClO2 product, it has been proven that we can safely remove bacteria, viruses, mold, parasites, pesticide sprays, pollutants falling onto our gardens, and remains of cockroaches or rodents in the warehouse or cargo hold that were crawling on our produce.

There are some pretty amazing germicidal properties of Safrax’s Chlorine Dioxide Solution. Notice the 5 minute contact time and the ppm concentration of Safrax ClO2 necessary to kill the Herpes Simplex Type 1 virus. The kill rate would likely be the same for Herpes Simplex 2 ( genital herpes).

Note that cyclospora is not listed here:

(Source) Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) is also called CDS (Chlorine Dioxide Solution) by some.

If you find any documentation that ClO2 can effectively kill cyclospora, please let us know in comments.

Cyclospora May Be the Exception to What ClO2 Is Known to Disinfect:

A 2008 study states: “In conclusion, Cryptosporidium and E. intestinalis loads were significantly reduced by ClO2 gas treatment, whereas Cyclospora sporulation was not affected. The ineffectiveness of ClO2 gas against Cyclospora …warrants that investigation of alternative sanitizing treatment be continued.”

So, don’t totally rely on ClO2 to remove cyclospora. Many I have spoken with are looking at temporary protection with ivermectin, but I haven’t been able to verify that it works for this complex single cell parasite unlike most other parasites.

Related: Cancer Surgeon: “Ivermectin Is SAFER Than a Sugar Pill”

However, ClO2 is what I will continue to use for washing all my produce for other contaminants because of its overall effectiveness. Today soaking our produce is, in my humble opinion, non-negotiable.

Why Chlorine Dioxide Works So Well For (Just About) Everything Else

On Mike Adam’s Health Ranger Report he featured Instant Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) tablet technology in his podcast. His endorsement has played a significant role in spreading awareness about the new, unique and very inexpensive ClO2 product by Safrax – now in effervescent tablet form.

Not only does 1 Safrax tablet wash a whole standard size sink-full of produce with zero toxicity, but these tablets (in greater amounts) are also used to disinfect hot tubs, remove biofilms in water lines and rainwater catchments, remove ANY smell from a car, room, building or septic tank, or remove mold or mold smell from a room or building. (Read how here).

The first 5-7 minutes:

In 1988, NASA’s Spinoff article proclaimed Chlorine Dioxide (then known as Alcide) to be a “Universal Antidote: “a multipurpose compound that destroys mold, fungus, bacteria and viruses without harming human, animals or plants.” (Read about it here on pgs. 118-121).

In the food industry, ClO2 is regularly used to disinfect fruits, vegetables, cheese and milk products, bakery, meat, fish and poultry products. (Food Safety News). So why not at home?

How to Wash Produce with Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2):

Before learning about Safrax disinfecting tablets 2 years ago, I had been washing my produce with Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) using this Part A and Part B kit to activate ClO2 on site here in our home. Either way, I know my food is free of yucky things that can silently make us sick, and washing my produce from the garden or the grocery is faster and easier than ever.

After washing off any obvious dirt, I don’t feel the need to sort through every leaf of lettuce or cilantro to know it is truly clean. (See the soak method and the spray method below).

How I Wash Produce to Kill Parasitic Eggs, Listeria & E. Coli
Ascaris spp. lay parasitic eggs and larvae that cause human infestation.

Not only does 1 Safrax ClO2 tablet wash a small sink-full of produce with zero toxicity, but the tablets (in greater amounts) can also disinfect a hot tub and remove biofilms in water lines, remove ANY smell from a car, room, or building, or remove mold or mold smell from a room or building. (Read how here).

Soak & Spray Method For Produce

Soak Method
The soaking method is ideal for fresh-cut herbs, leafy greens, berries, grape clusters, broccoli bunches, strawberries and other produce with lots of nooks and crannies. Use a clean container, basin, bowl or smaller sink for soaking. Fill with cold water, add 1 tablets of Safrax All-Purpose Instant ClO2. (I use 2 tablets because I have a very large bowl and want the extra punch.) Place produce in the water-filled container and let soak for at least 3 minutes. (You may want to keep produce that floats submerged with a plate to reach all surfaces.)

I usually soaking my greens and other produce for at least 10 minutes anyway, because I am busy elsewhere. Soaking does the work for me.

Remove produce from water and place it in a clean colander. Allow the produce to drain and then let air dry before storing it. It does not need to be rinsed.

Spray Method
The spray method is a good option for produce with firm skin and smooth shape, like apples, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, peppers, eggplant, etc.  Add 1 tablet of Safrax ClO2 in a 33oz spray, then spray over produce while removing dirt and residue. Allow produce to air dry before storing.

Now at home, you can also apply ClO2 to your Chicken, Meat and Fish like it’s done in many meat processing facilities. Importantly, it meets the regulatory requirements of the FDA, the EPA, OSHA, and the USDA’s National Organic Program. (Food Safety News)

Historically, outbreaks of Cyclospora cayetanensis have been associated with travel to other third world countries and imported produce. However, in the last few years, we have seen a dramatically increasing number of cases tied to domestic produce grown in contaminated soil or washed with water contaminated with human feces as the parasite relies on human hosts to complete its life cycle. The root of the problem almost always traces back to the agricultural level. (source)(source)

This is a gross thought, but it makes me wonder who is defecating in the produce fields?

Maybe the best way moving forward is to start growing our own produce. Here are some gardening posts if you need some ideas.

Yay! Thank you, Jacqueline. This is just in time. I have been soaking in baking soda water because I know that can help with the chemicals on food. I also know borax can kill parasites/eggs (Dr. Hulda Clark’s books have great info on that). Looks like this is another, perhaps even better, option than those.

This has been on my mind this year, especially since one of my children immediately puked after eating a couple strawberries straight from the garden. She wasn’t sick at all. Later that day, she ate another strawberry from the garden, but nicely washed it and she was just fine.

    Thanks,
    Katie

Hi. So do you use the safrax or the A B kit? One part talks about tablets and one talks about the kit but the kit looks like it’s drops not a tablet. Also, safrax website is it the odor removal one you sue to clean produce? Or you only use the A B kit? Sorry, just trying to make sure I order the right product.

      Hi, Abby!
I’ve for a long while used the A/B kit and will continue to use it from time to time depending whether I’m processing large amounts of garden produce or grocery produce at my kitchen sink, but the tablets are more cost effective and easier (+faster) than waiting the 3 minutes for the A and B to mix and then adding it to my water.
I love both. They are just different ways of getting the same safe, shelf-life extending outcome.
And it is the “All-Purpose Disinfection & Odor” product that I ordered. In the video, Mike Adams explains that all 3 products are exactly the same product. You can use the one I ordered (disinfection) for spa and pools (spa and pools), as they are all interchangeable. They just decided to market it that way for clarity of use for the consumer.

Hi. You don’t mention if the produce should be rinsed off after soaking before eating. Cabbage is such a tight all of leaves, so should it be cut apart before soaking? Thank you.

      Hi, Debbie,
Technically, with CD, there is no need to rinse produce off, but if what you are washing is the 3rd or 4th batch and there is residue or bits of produce in the water, I would.
Just know the CD is far cleaner (more pure) than the water coming your of your tap, so it is protective to the produce.
With a cabbage, I would not cut it apart as the inside of a cabbage should be pristine and the inner leaves have good bacteria on them that can start a sauerkraut to ferment.
I just generally remove the outer leaves that may be damaged and core it a little and then soak the whole head for 7-10 minutes, remove, let it drain and store it or cut it.

      I hope that helps,
      Jacque

Hi! Does CD kill off the good bacteria that’s on the fruits and vegetables? Just curious because I do like to ferment them and wonder if this will affect that? Thank you!

Catherine, that is a good question, but I think it does not harm good bacterial flora (bloom). It has been proven to be safe for the human gut as many take ClO2 for cancer and many other things, including autism. It is of top importance to protect the autistic child’s gut so they can heal, and if ClO2 was not going to preserve the good bacteria, it would not be used.

Here is a solid group of studies about that: https://drkalcker.substack.com/p/why-doesnt-cds-negatively-affect

Since you ferment, it would be a great experiment to try a small batch washed in Clo2 and find out!
If you do a small test, please let me know. Also you could call Safrax and see if they have a technical person you could ask.
          Blessings,
          Jacque

I’ve heard of someone who tried CD to sterilize something (using the proper rate) and it would not ferment after that. I would try it on just a small amount first to see what happens.

We use ~1 tsp baking soda per gallon of water to soak produce, then rinse. We’ve had no trouble with fermenting using this method.

Katie, I found a moment to dig this up on the effect of CD on the gut: Here is a quick read of a solid group of studies about that: https://drkalcker.substack.com/p/why-doesnt-cds-negatively-affect
I would love for someone to try fermenting a small batch of cabbage after washing with CDS and test it out.
I am pretty sure I’ve had successful ferments since I started using DC to do my produce, but I can’t be sure. ~J

If used in a spray bottle, can the spray bottle be kept for future washes, or need to make up a fresh batch with each washing? Thanks!

      Hi, Jane,
I haven’t made a spray of it yet with Safrax, but I do know it will last longer if kept in a dark place (out of sunlight and UV rays).
I should just call them bc I didn’t see any time frame on their site, but if you beat me to it, would you let me/us know?

      Thanks, ~J

      Hi, Sue,
Well, I do wash our organically-grown produce because of the aluminum coming down from above: https://deeprootsathome.com/stealing-our-sunshine-climate-engineering/
Also because our soil is heavily composted (filled with live micro-organisms of all sorts and the occasional bird poop), and my husband usually picks for me and who knows what he just handled on the farm beforehand.
😀 It is still far better than what gets shipped in huge conveyances…
      Hope that helps! ~J

The only Safrax I see on Amazon is Heavy Duty Odor Removal. In reviews, people say a vapor comes off it that eliminates odors. Is this the one to use for cleaning fruits and veggies? What about the vapor? Thanks!

      Debbie,
No, that isn’t the one. In the post, find the section “How to Wash Produce with Chlorine Dioxide (CD)”. Down in the first paragraph in that section, see the words:

“Now, with the Safrax disinfectant product, washing my produce from the garden or the grocery is faster and easier than ever.”
Click the link for those words and you will go to the SAFRAX. Scroll down a bit, and you will see the one labeled “Safrax disinfectant product” in the middle. That’s it! 😀

Hi again! Before I got your reply, I ordered the safrax, which was the odor remover one. So I ended up emailing Joe from Safrax to see what he’d have to say about the differences and here is his reply below.
    “Hi Debbie,
Thank you so much for your interest in Safrax Chlorine Dioxide! Please note that our products each contain the exact same identical tablet and instructions. There are just different labels for different industries on the three products offered.
You can purchase conveniently on our secure online store:
    https://safrax.com/shop/
Carton discounts are available by entering the quantity of 20, 40, or 60 in the box at checkout. (See wholesale chart by clicking on each product)
    Blessings!
    Joe
    Safrax.com”
I ordered from Amazon, because there was no shipping. And this was the only safrax product they carry, but according to Joe they are all the same. I just don’t want to make my family sick from some chemicals because I went overboard. I’m going to trust what Joe says.

Speaking of biofilms, I noted a television commercial showing a plate freshly washed with Dawn sheeted water off.

That’s the kind of things car wax manufacturers brag about their products doing. They do it by leaving something behind, rather than by spotlessly cleaning things.

I was treating my dogs like I actually like them by washing their dishes, but noticed they still felt slimy, even after a few scrubs with Dawn Dish Soap.

These things got me to thinking back to others who talked of using citric acid to clean. After a scrub with Dawn, I sprinkled a little citric acid into the doggo’s dishes and washed them again. AFTER THAT, they felt squeaky clean.

Kelly, I have often thought that might be the case. I don’t use Dawn on my dishes now – only on windows – but I used to. Taking it a set further, though, I use Meijer’s brand Dishwasher detergent. They do feel squeaky clean, but what is in the steam we breathe and is there a residue left behind? Sheesh! So many things to think about… I’m just slowly working my way to figure out safer cleaners!

There’s been a lot of people getting sick in my area, (northeastern Indiana). I got sick from chipotle, others from taco bell. I tried ivermectin, it seems to have helped but I’m going to try my 3000ppm CDS also since a search has me doubting if ivermectin itself can eliminate the cyclospora.

I love safrax CDS tablets. i use them to clean produce, keep my fridge sanitary (bottled water with the lid off and a couple tablets of CDS in it, adding more when the yellow color fades from the water over time) i never get moldy produce in my fridge anymore as long as it’s exposed to the air. I’ve eaten month old blueberries that before would have molded in a week or less.

I also use the tablets to make 3000ppm CDS which I use for many things, today for cyclospora.
