Medical deceptions, small and large, have been around forever, and I’ve written about many through the years. Here are three more of interest to be aware of.
Dr. Andrew Kaufman states, “What if I told you hospitals are quietly profiting off your birth… without your informed consent?

1. Most women are unaware that their placenta is often claimed by the hospital and is often sold for a quite a profit, then used in medical research, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic applications.
Its post-birth value in commercial and medical markets is significant—and this has created a quiet but highly profitable industry. From wound healing patches to high-end skincare products and experimental therapies, the placenta is in high demand.
While a general consent form is signed upon admission to labor and delivery—often during intense moments when the patient is not in a position to review every clause—this “consent” typically includes broad language that permits the hospital to retain and repurpose biological materials, including the placenta and umbilical cord blood.
Most parents are not informed of this in a transparent or ethical manner. This practice raises serious questions about bodily autonomy, medical ethics, and the commodification of childbirth.
The placenta is a powerful, bioactive organ, rich in stem cells, hormones, and growth factors. It plays a vital role not only in sustaining life during pregnancy but also holds potential for healing and regeneration postpartum. According to this PubMed Study, “Placental tissue is a source of natural hormones, trace elements and essential amino acids – the ingestion of dehydrated placenta could influence postpartum convalescence, lactation, mood and recovery.” Some women have their placenta placed on ice and have a certified placental encapsulator freeze dry, grind, and make it into capsules. I am not specifically recommending it but want to bring it to your attention.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you can ask for clear documentation on hospital policies. And most importantly, please choose providers and birth settings that honor your values and bodily sovereignty.
The second medical exploitation – often (but not always) for the doctor’s convenience – is off-label elective Pitocin use.
Please read the 20 Package insert reasons most women should say NO to elective Pitocin use here: Pitocin (from the package insert): Hemorrhage, High BP, Low Apgar Scores. (Much of what you will read will probably be new to you because these are the things that aren’t being discussed at all!)
Please share it with young women of childbearing age you love.
We know that elective, induced labor in healthy women at term more than doubles the risk of emergency C-section, a major abdominal surgery, compared with natural (unforced) labor. For a c-section, after they cut into 7 different layers of your body, 3 of them being your core muscles that help to hold you up, you usually are instructed to get out of bed once the anesthesia has worn off. Then you are sent home in a day or two and instructed not to carry anything heavier than your baby. That is all. Nothing more is done. A c-section can cause: lower abdominal pain, weakness, back pain, incontinence (leaking urine), inability to control gas or bowel movements (poop), hip pain, difficulty urinating, constipation, and pain with intercourse. Why is it that after an artificial knee replacement we are well cared for, given adequate education, and made sure we can do everything we want to do after the surgery, but after a cesarean section that might have been unplanned and traumatic, we are not told anything about how we should care for our body and ourselves?
3. Another medical exploitation actually called “best practice” (even though it’s really not) is rushing cutting the umbilical cord at birth. In most hospitals, the cord is clamped and cut within seconds of the baby’s first cry, however, this compromises your baby’s health:
We’re talking about the difference between:
– anemia or strength
– inflammation or immune balance
– struggling organs or a supported transition into life
Most placental transfusions are complete within the first 3-5 minutes after birth, especially if you wait until the cord stops pulsing or turns white. That’s the sign it’s fully done its job. (source)(source)
Read about how to do it properly here: Cord Blood Is Biological Treasure, So Don’t Rush the Cutting
It Is YOUR Birth Plan!
Please communicate with your doctor or trusted midwife or doula your specific preferences for your birth plan ahead of time. If they act dismissive or resistant, that’s a red flag. And if you’re birthing in a hospital, have your support person or doula advocate for this on your behalf. Sometimes they try to rush or sneak it in, so having an aware advocate there for you is huge.
We and our babies deserve better care.
“I birthed at home to avoid all the corrupt practices of medicalized births. I also had my placenta dehydrated with herbs, blessed and then encapsulated. I consumed them to help me with recovery. I’ve had 4 babies and with this one, I never had any signs of post-partum depression and recovered powerfully. I still have the remaining capsules in my freezer.” ~L.N.

I left a biomedical company 18 months ago. I started to question the femur bones harvesting location. Most of the donor locations were in Arizona, right on the border. What prompted me to leave was the use of placentas in the products. I became extremely agitated, I felt they mostly came from abortions. No respect for human life.

Judy, my heart hurts when I hear these stories bc I realize even more that we live in an incredibly broken world. Thank you for sharing it that more might be aware.
God bless you for doing the right thing! ~Jacque
