I’ve wanted to share how to make homemade quercetin (aka hydroxychloroquine) since Covid but never got a chance, so here we go.
A rapidly expanding body of scientific evidence links regular quercetin consumption to improved cardiovascular health, reduced cancer risk, much milder allergic responses, and improved resistance to infection.
You can achieve these broad health benefits (and more) in 2 ways: You can purchase quercetin capsules in a whole food blend or you can make it for yourself very easily, and it stores well in the fridge or freezer.
Quercetin is a natural form of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). It is made using only the peel and the white pith under the peel of organic grapefruits and lemons.
A quick overview in under 2 minutes.
You can watch a 10 minute visual of making the homemade remedy here, if necessary. It stresses that when you simmer the peels, you need a tight fitting lid on the pot.
Some of Quercetin’s Health Benefits
Quercetin completely blocked the deadly “anaphylactic” response to peanuts in peanut-allergic rat studies. The animals had none of the airway tightening, blood pressure lowering, or blood vessel leakiness seen in controls exposed to peanuts. In life-threatening peanut allergy or food allergies, quercetin favorably modifies the allergic response in potentially life-saving ways.(source)
A large number of studies have demonstrated that quercetin protects kidneys by lessening renal toxicity, fibrosis and inflammation in a variety of kidney diseases.
Several basic quercetin mechanisms include lowering cholesterol, moderating blood pressure, and reducing dangerous accumulations of abdominal and liver fat. It improves the health of your endothelium, the lining layer of the arteries that controls blood flow and pressure.(source)
Quercetin is a powerhouse that can shut down cancer cells early in multiple cancers.(source)
Hydroxychloroquine is essentially nothing but quinine, something that anyone can make at home. It is tonic water. You may have seen Schweppes tonic water. Sadly, Schweppes tonic quinine water contains preservatives, saccharine, natural flavor and a bunch of other nasty additives.
Here’s the Easy Quercetin/HCQ/Quinine Water Recipe:
• Take the rind of 2-3 already washed organic grapefruits and 2-3 organic lemons. (Avoid the chemical sprays by using organic!)
• Put all pieces into a glass or metal pan and cover it with water about 3 inches above the peels – about 8 cups of filtered water.
• Bring to boil for just a minute, and than lower the heat so you don’t harm the enzymes. Put a lid on your pot. Barely simmer for about 2-3 hours. Do not take the lid off of the pot till it cools completely as this allow the quinine to escape in the steam.
• Strain it with a sieve using a large funnel into a glass quart jar with a tight fitting lid.
• Keep it in the fridge up to 14 days.
• It can then be frozen and thawed. As one woman wrote, “I poured mine into ice cube trays. It still cured me.” Another shared, “I freeze it in small jelly jars; they thaw out quickly and I dose for several days from the jar.”
Note: You can also make this in a crock-pot. There is a a good FaceBook group dedicated to this.
How to Dose:
For prevention take 1 tablespoon, 2 times a day.
I take it alone and chase with plain water, but you can also drink it as a tea, than sweeten it with honey since it will be bitter.
If you feel sick, take 1 tablespoon every couple of hours to bring up the phlegm from your lungs. Discontinue as soon as you get better.
If you take zinc with this recipe, the zinc propels the quinine into your cells for a much faster healing.
This should take away your fears about anything viral because you now have a defense.
And don’t forget about Nebulized Peroxide, the Single Most Effective Early Strategy – this technique has saved many thousands of lives during Covid, conservatively speaking.
“I love You, Lord
Oh, Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God.
And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God.”

You can also make this in a crock-pot; that’s how I do it.
There is a a good FaceBook group dedicated to this, if anyone is interested:

Glad to be able to contribute!
The simple way I do it is to juice the grapefruit and lemons first, and then just quarter them and peel the pulp away from each section. I usually do 2 grapefruit and 2 lemons.
I pop the sections into the crock pot, put in 2 liters of filtered water and cook on low for 6-7 hours. I then turn off the crock pot and remove the ceramic insert [with the lid on] and leave it overnight to cool.
In the morning, I strain it and freeze it in ice cube trays. I drink 1/4 cup every day in a large glass of water with a tsp of powdered vitamin C mixed in.

Oh, that sounds amazing and strengthening! Thank you for contributing your method here!

Jacque,
A very robust elderly lady at church told me she makes a batch of this once or twice a year. She takes some every night before bed for a couple weeks until the batch is gone. It’s a routine that has helped her stay super healthy. She includes a few garlic cloves w/ the citrus peels and once it has all cooled, she adds the juice from the grapefruits and lemons. She said to not take it all the time as it can thin the blood too much.
We made several large batches a few years ago and canned it in pints. That seems to work well for us. We generally take a couple doses, morning and evening, on days we’ll be around other people.

Jacqueline
Katie,
Thank you for sharing the elderly lady’s tips and your family’s practice here for others to learn from! And I love the addition of garlic and all the juice!
It is such a powerful, strengthening boost to immune system health.
In Christ,
Jacque

Any reason we can’t use the whole fruit? Peel and all? I’ve seen recipes that use the whole fruit. Any reason one is better than the other?
Desiree
I was wondering if you can omit or substitute something else for the grapefruit? The grapefruit interacts with my medications and I’m not supposed to consume it.
Jacqueline
Desiree, I do appreciate the question bc I realize many cannot use grapefruit bc of their medicine. I did not know the exact answer to your question or if others have a recipe that does the same thing, so I searched for the sake of time and came up with this answer using AI (I usually do not use AI):
“Yes, you can substitute other citrus fruits like lemons or limes for grapefruit to make quercetin water, although grapefruit is particularly high in quercetin. Just ensure to use a combination of chopped whole fruit and peels for the best flavor and benefits. These are the sources they reference: bevibrant.co.nz and Wikipedia
I hope that helps!
God bless you, ~J
PS Desiree, look for Katie’s comment just this morning and she has a recipe that is slightly different using lemons to replace the grapefruit!!
Katie
I commented a while back about a elderly lady I know who makes this drink. I just spoke w/ her again about her homemade drink this afternoon and asked for more details. She does NOT use the grapefruit, but just five lemons, a few inches of ginger, and a few cloves of garlic. She makes a tea from the lemon peel, ginger, and garlic, strains it, then adds the lemon juice once the tea has cooled. She said her “recipe” makes ~1.5 quarts total. She takes a small amount (maybe 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup?) at bedtime every evening until the batch is gone. It lasts a couple weeks. She does this 3-4 times per year.
Katie
Jacqueline
Katie, that is very helpful! I made a PS in the comment back to Desiree hoping she sees your input!! Thank you! ~J
Halee
Can this be used for children as well? How would you adjust dosing?
Jacqueline
Halee,
Quercetin is a useful supplement in kids and adults because of its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and immune balancing actions.
In children, quercetin supplementation can be helpful for treating seasonal allergies, allergic asthma, eczema, hives, photosensitivity, some ASD symptoms, and some ADHD symptoms. It might also be prescribed as part of a chemotherapy protocol or in conjunction with other medications during a viral illness.
Supplementation is safe for adults and is likely just as safe for kids. However, there isn’t a consensus on safe dosages for kids, so a doctor’s guidance is needed. Kids are usually prescribed ¼ to ½ adult dose depending on their age and size..

I hopes this helps,

Just curious if adding grapefruit and lemon essential oils to a glass of water would work just as well. Aren’t the oils distilled from the peels?
Jacqueline
Beth, I don’t know if it would be effective or even how much E.O.s to use. I do believe that very concentrated grapefruit and lemon essential oils are safe to take in small amounts, but medically speaking, I just have no idea. ~J
