Surgery represents conventional medicine at its best and its worst. On the one hand, surgery demonstrates incredibly sophisticated informational and technical advancement, yet on the other hand, it often indicates the inability of physicians to prevent needing this invasive treatment of last resort. (Being a long-time surgical heart nurse, this became all too clear to me over the years).
A great strength of homeopathy is that it works alongside conventional medicine in post- surgery recovery care. Remedies can be taken safely with prescribed medications, offering wonderful additional support. (source)
When possible, homeopaths first attempt to to see if treatment with an individualized homeopathic medicine can prevent the need for surgery. Patients are sometimes impressed at the significant results that homeopathic medicines can provide–not that they can do the impossible, but they can often elicit a healing response when conventional therapeutics cannot.
In all types of surgery, homeopathic remedies can be used to speed up healing and decrease pain. Those who employ homeopathy have found homeopathics to be so effective that they greatly reduced or even eliminated the use of prescription pain medicines after surgery. Many doctors have also been surprised at how quickly healing occurred after surgery.
(I just added 2 case studies of how specific homeopathic remedies greatly enhance recovery and can reduce reliance on opioids after invasive abdominal surgeries in this post here).
The integration of homeopathic medicines with surgical care uses the best of both worlds leading to better health outcomes:
–Arnica montana for Reduction of Bruising in Rhinoplasty Surgery – This double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that oral administration of Arnica montana showed a quick resolution of the extent and intensity of ecchymosis [bruising].”
—This study found that Arnica, taken orally, reduced post-operative blood loss after mastectomy surgery. A first randomized clinical trial on treatment with Arnica montana to reduce post-operative bleeding in patients undergoing total mastectomy.
—This animal study looking at nerve regeneration found that rats who were given Hypericum perforatum 30C had faster and better recovery of affected nerves than untreated rats.
Homeopathic Medicines Before and After Surgery
Surgeons commonly ask patients not to take any food, drink, or drugs prior to surgery. While it makes sense to avoid food, drink, and conventional drugs, there have never been any reported problems from taking appropriate homeopathic remedies prior to surgery.
Homeopathy Before Surgery
Homeopathic medicines can help people deal with the various emotions they are experiencing prior to surgery. Gelsemium 30 is a common remedy for the person who experiences great anxiety, apprehension, weakness, and trembling prior to surgery. Aconitum 30 is indicated when the person is terrified about surgery and thinks that he will die from it.
Take either Gelsemium or Aconitum (according to dosing directions on the tube) the night before the surgery and another dose upon waking in the morning. If fear and/or anxiety is felt after surgery, take one to three more doses.
One pediatric study on 50 children who underwent surgery showed that 95% of those given Aconitum experienced significantly less post-operative pain and agitation.
The 10 Most Common Recommendations For After Surgery
Aconitum napellus 30c is helpful (every hour for up to four doses) for any type of post-surgery anxiety, especially if there is fear of death.
Arnica montana 30c can help with any kind of surgery. Arnica helps to slow or stop bleeding after surgery. Arnica also reduces pain, swelling, and bruising. Phosphorus 30 is the primary remedy for helping to stop bleeding when Arnica does not work adequately. (Note: Arnica can be so effective at preventing bruising that you may not actually show any bruising if it is used before and after the surgery.) (source)
Bryonia 30c is helpful when even small movements causes pain. There may be a desire to keep the injured part very still. The injury feels better with no movement at all, and any little movement causes increased pain.
Hypericum perforatum 30c works well for healing damaged nerves and infected wounds. Nerve pain that responds well to Hypericum include sharp or shooting pains. Hypericum is also an excellent remedy to use if there are any signs of infection of the wounds such as redness, red streaks, pus, etc.
Ledum palustre 30c works well for deep bruising of a dark purple color, as well as when there is any tingling, coldness, or numbness of the injured part.
Phosphorus 30c may be helpful for problems coming out of anesthesia and for post-operative vomiting.
Rhus toxicodendron 30c helps with healing injured connective tissues and ligaments (incl. joint pains, muscle pain, backache and general body aches). It is very useful after surgeries where muscles or connective tissues have been over-stretched or over-manipulated as often happens. The pain may lessen on continued movement.
Ruta graveolens 30c helps with healing tendons, cartilage, and bone covering (including dental surgeries specifically). Movement does not relieve the pain.
Staphysagria 30c works well to heal surgical wounds specifically.
Symphytum officinale 30c (commonly called bone-knit) helps with bone healing specifically. (source)

The length of time of treatment will be different with each patient, depending upon the intensity of symptoms.
Doses should generally be taken as long as pain persists, though they should not be taken for more than a couple of days, unless the person is still in pain and the remedy is providing obvious relief.
In addition to the remedies above, the following homeopathic remedies may also be helpful for:
–Hysterectomy: Causticum 30, three times a day (some homeopaths recommend Staphysagria 30, three times a day)
–Caesarean section or episiotomy: Staphysagria 30 or Bellis perennis 30, three times a day
–Abortion or miscarriage: Ignatia amara 30, every four hours
–Plastic surgery on the breast: Bellis perennis 30, three times a day
–Amputation of the breast or a lump: Arnica 200c and Bellis perennis 200c, every 4 hours (see more in Integrative Breast Cancer Treatment Plans)
–Circumcision: Staphysagria 30 and Arnica 30, every four hours for a day.
–Prostate surgery: Staphysagria 30, three times a day
–Abdominal surgery: Staphysagria 30 or Bellis perennis 30, three times a day
–Appendectomy: Rhus tox 30, three times a day
–Gall bladder surgery: Lycopodium 30, three times a day
–Eye surgery: Ledum 30, every four hours
–Orthopedic surgery: (dose all every four hours)
- –total hip with extensive manipulation of connective tissues and ligaments: Rhus tox 3o
- –involving cartilage or periosteum (bone covering): Ruta 30
- –involving the spine and nerves: Hypericum 30
–Surgery for bullet wounds and/or stab wounds: Staphysagria 30, four times a day
–Plastic surgery: Arnica 30 (internally) and Calendula cream, (externally) four times a day
–Amputation: Hypericum 30, every four hours
–Hemorrhoids: Staphysagria 30 or Hamamelis 30, every four hours for two or three days. Varicose veins: Ledum 30, three times a day
–Dental surgery: Hypericum 30 and Ruta 30, alternating every two to four hours
Homeopathy for Specific Ailments Post-Op
Other common conditions after surgery for which homeopathic medicines are often effective include the following:
Wound Infection: Topical application of Calendula and Hypericum ointment is indispensable in injuries with broken skin promoting healthy granulation and rapid healing. Where Arnica is never used for broken skin, Calendula, applied to the wound bed twice daily, works wonders. Calendula 30c can be taken orally as well. Pyrogenium 200c orally acts in homeopathy like a general antibiotic in cases where fever continues for a long period after the surgery, maybe even weeks, and the infection does not respond to antibiotics.
Preventing Scars and Adhesions: (See this post on Thiosinaminum) or use topical Calendula applied at least once a day.
Constipation: Nux vomica 30c twice per day is an excellent first remedy to start with. It acts as a liver cleanser and helps to regulate peristalsis. Alumina 200c if there is no desire for a stool at all or inactivity of the bowels. Take twice per day.
Nausea and Vomiting: Nux vomica 6 or 30 is good for violent retching, especially when there is generally ineffectual retching that does not lead to vomiting. Ipecac 6 or 30 is effective for persistent nausea with vomiting, when vomiting does not provide relief. Arsenicum album 6 or 30 treats violent and incessant vomiting which is made worse by drinking water or eating.
Dosing: Take a remedy every two hours during intense symptoms and every four hours during less intense discomfort. If improvement is not obvious after 24 hours, consider another remedy. There is more information about proper dosing for homeopathic remedies here: Basics of Homeopathic Dosing
Abdominal Gas or Sharp Gas Pains that Radiate up into the Torso and Neck Area: This condition is extremely common after surgery, especially abdominal surgery. Magnesium Phosphoricum 200 is the great antispasmodic remedy for neuralgic pains and colic after abdominal surgery. Carbo veg 30 helps people who suffer from great distension from gas and who desire carbonated drinks because they seem to help them release gas. Colocynthis 30 can also be useful. Cinchona 30 is helpful when there is more pain than distension, frequent rumbling in the abdomen, and no relief.
