Herbert Needleman began practicing pediatrics in the late 1950s in Philadelphia. Lead paint coated walls and porches of homes everywhere in American life back then. Most water came through lead-soldered water pipes. Lead paint was used on children’s toys. And motor fuel containing lead was belched into the air daily through the exhaust of every car and bus on every roadway in America.
(I personally remember complaining of having headaches till noon as my dad followed the lead-belching school bus in our 1958 white Corvair with windows down to take us to grade school on his way to work)….
Dr. Needleman kept noticing something different about the children in his office who had been treated for lead poisoning. “They came back quieter. Slower. Struggling in school in ways no one could quite explain. Yet, their blood tests were normal now. They appeared fine. But their lives were never the same.” What if lead was hiding in their bones, their brains, quietly changing who these children would become?
To prove that even low level lead exposure was harming children, Needleman needed a way to measure how much lead a child had absorbed over many years – not just the snapshot of a moment of a blood test.
He began asking questions that almost no one else in medicine was asking. Dr. Needleman began conducting a novel kind of research in which he collected and measured lead levels in children’s baby teeth. It demonstrating a correlation between intellectual development and exposure to lead, even at low levels.
Bone biopsies with needles were invasive and painful, and he felt parents would’nt consent to that for a research study. So he was stuck.
The Philadelphia Tooth Fairy Project
Bones and teeth store calcium. And because lead behaves like calcium in the body, lead gets locked inside teeth as they form from birth.
Each baby tooth a 5 or 6 year-old loses is a record of chemical exposure during early childhood.
Starting in the late 1960s, Needleman launched what he called the Philadelphia Tooth Fairy Project asking 1st- and 2nd-grade teachers to collect baby teeth as they fell out naturally. (No needles.) Nearly 3,000 teeth were analyzed, and for the first time in history, his research showed a clear picture of how much lead American city children had actually absorbed over time.
The evidence was quite shocking.
Children with high lead levels in their teeth scored significantly lower on IQ tests. They struggled more with language and had shorter attention spans. They had a harder time following directions in class. (source)

In 1979, Needleman published his landmark findings in the New England Journal of Medicine. The implications were enormous: If ordinary, undiagnosed children were being harmed, that meant tens of millions of American kids were growing up inside an invisible brain fog of lead exposure, every single day, making parenting more challenging.
What followed was one of the most aggressive corporate attacks on a scientist in modern American history.
Needleman had his lab records endlessly searched by investigators, was hounded by journalists and hired snoops raising doubts about his character and motives.
“The furious lead industry hired their own researchers. Funded their own studies. Eventually, scientific misconduct charges were formally filed against Needleman. His reputation, his career, and his livelihood were all placed in real jeopardy. All because his research was inconveniently correct.” (source)
Dr. Needleman demanded a full and open hearing and won the right to one. In 1991, he was testified in a widely-aired Congressional hearing. The EPA independently reexamined his data and reached the same conclusions he had. Every single misconduct charge was dismissed. (source)

The billion dollar industry had failed! By the mid-1980s, the United States began phasing lead out of gasoline.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission also banned lead from interior paint and children’s toys and they kept lowering the threshold as science learned more about deadly lead. The results were revolutionary.
Blood lead levels in American children eventually dropped by more than 90%. Childhood IQ in the U.S. is estimated to have risen by ~5 points or more.
Dr. Needleman’s selfless and caring work saved thousands of lives, and improved the health of countless others, many of them children and their families living in poverty.

Still Lead Exposure Continues Today, and It’s Totally Preventable:
A 2023 study found LOW-level lead exposure was associated with 765 Million lost IQ points in children aged 5 and younger.
Today, you never know unless you test. Healthcare providers and most local health departments can test for lead in the blood. Other places to get private lab tests done are LabCorp, Walk-In-Lab, and Healthlabs. Here is one Lab Locator.
Here’s how lead poisoning is continuing today:
1. A recent congressional investigation revealed that 7 major commercial baby food brands were contaminated with significant levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury. (source)
2. There’s been a recall on Disney-themed baby and toddler clothing sporting lead-contaminated paint. How many of these garments are still in children’s closets?
3. Then there’s the very popular dark chocolate bars showing up high in lead and cadmium. Consumer Reports measured the amount of heavy metals in 28 dark chocolate bars.
4. Don’t forget that toys imported (mainly China) are notorious for lead paint on metal, wood and plastic toys, especially toy jewelry.
5. There are heavy metals in COMMON regular spices and even organic spices.
Is Lead Hard to Get Out of the Body?
Lead is NOT hard to get out with Advanced TRS (toxin removal system), but it needs to be done. The science [1][2][3] says Clinoptilolite, the type of zeolite mineral in TRS, is highly porous and acts as a binder through direct adsorption of heavy metals, such as lead.
