Thanks to epidemiologist Nicholas Hulscher, MPH, we now know that just seven daily doses of nano-curcumin dropped Cyclospora shedding by 97.2%, eliminated detectable parasites, restored damaged intestinal tissue, and prevented infection relapse.

Cyclospora infections are surging across the United States. Caused by the microscopic intestinal parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, the infection can trigger prolonged watery diarrhea, severe abdominal cramping, nausea, fatigue, and weight loss that may persist for weeks without treatment.

As of July 17, 2026, the CDC had confirmed over several thousand domestic cases acquired cases across 31 states, with over 100 hospitalizations, while the contaminated food sources as of today have not yet been identified.

Bactrim, a sulfa drug that is known to also cause nausea, diarrhea, and skin changes, is the usual treatment for cyclosporiasis, so many are seeking natural alternatives.

Beware: sometimes recommended as a second tier treatment, black box fluoroquinolone antibiotic Cipro can cause horrific damage to muscles, tendons, and also serious DNA changes. Please do not go that route!

A recent study identified curcumin—the primary bioactive pigment in turmeric—as a potentially powerful natural treatment for Cyclospora infection. In mice, just seven daily doses of nano-curcumin reduced parasite shedding by 97.2%, eliminated detectable parasites, restored damaged intestinal tissue, and prevented relapse after treatment withdrawal. Nano-curcumin is curcumin packaged in extremely small oil-based droplets (30–40 nanometers) designed to improve its delivery and absorption.

Nano-Curcumin Stops Cyclospora, Heals Gut & Prevents Relapse

Researchers experimentally infected mice with Cyclospora and compared three treatments:

  • Nano-curcumin: 2 mg/kg once daily
  • Regular curcumin: 2 mg/kg once daily
  • Bactrim/TMP-SMX: 5 mg/kg trimethoprim plus 25 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole once daily

Each treatment was administered for only seven consecutive days, beginning on day 6 after infection when parasite shedding started. The mice received no additional treatment and were followed through day 30—more than two weeks after the final dose.

Nano-curcumin produced the strongest overall results.

By the end of treatment, parasite oocyst shedding had fallen by:

  • 84.0% with nano-curcumin
  • 77.3% with Bactrim
  • 73.3% with regular curcumin

At day 30, more than two weeks after treatment ended:

  • Nano-curcumin: 97.2% reduction
  • Regular curcumin: 93.5% reduction
  • Bactrim: 79.4% reduction
  • Untreated control: persistent and increasing shedding

All three treatments significantly reduced Cyclospora shedding compared with the untreated control.

The mean stool oocyst count at day 30 was 1.07 in untreated infected mice, compared with 0.22 in the Bactrim group, 0.07 with regular curcumin, and just 0.03 with nano-curcumin.

Nano-Curcumin Prevented Relapse

The most important result was not simply the reduction in parasite shedding.

The authors also reported no recurrence after nano-curcumin treatment. Unlike regular curcumin and Bactrim, no rebound in infection was detected after treatment withdrawal. No parasite was found in intestinal tissue by standard histological staining, and the researchers stated that the infection appeared to have been eliminated.

Thus, seven daily doses of nano-curcumin produced a sustained 97.2% reduction in parasite shedding, with no detected intestinal parasites or relapse more than two weeks later.

Regular Curcumin Was Also Highly Effective

The ordinary curcumin group also performed remarkably well.

After the same seven-day course, regular curcumin reduced parasite shedding by 93.5% at day 30. No parasite was detected in the intestinal tissue at that time point.

The main distinction was that low-level stool shedding remained, so the authors did not describe regular curcumin as preventing recurrence as clearly as the nano-curcumin emulsion. Still, the findings suggest that curcumin itself has substantial anti-Cyclospora activity, while nano-formulation may enhance and prolong its effect.

Curcumin Damaged the Parasite and Restored the Intestine

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed extensive structural damage to Cyclospora oocysts following treatment with both forms of curcumin.

Nano-Curcumin Stops Cyclospora, Heals Gut & Prevents Relapse

Untreated oocysts had smooth, regular outer surfaces. Curcumin-treated oocysts became distorted and developed dimples, protrusions, and surface irregularities. Nano-curcumin produced even more dramatic damage to the cyclospora oocyst, including enlargement or shrinkage, deep furrows, pores, perforations, and rough surface damage.

The intestinal findings were equally striking:

Untreated infection caused shortened and blunted villi, epithelial erosion, inflammation, and progressive destruction of the absorptive intestinal surface. Both Bactrim and regular curcumin improved the intestinal tissue, but nano-curcumin produced the greatest recovery.

Nano-Curcumin Stops Cyclospora, Heals Gut & Prevents Relapse

Results: In the nano-curcumin group, the intestinal surface remained intact, inflammation declined markedly, villous length returned toward normal, and no parasites were detected in the tissue.

Why Nano-Curcumin May Matter

Curcumin has demonstrated antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but poor water solubility and limited bioavailability have restricted its therapeutic potential.

The nanoemulsion used in this study contained particles measuring approximately 30–40 nanometers. This formulation may improve curcumin’s solubility, stability, biological activity, and contact time with the intestinal parasite.

Because Cyclospora infects the small intestine, orally administered curcumin may also remain concentrated near the site of infection. The strong performance of regular curcumin supports the compound’s underlying antiparasitic activity, while the improved results with nano-curcumin suggest that drug delivery may be the key to maximizing that effect.

I, Jacqueline, already take this turmeric daily, but am switching over to this nano-curcumin as a preventative move because it is in the right nanometer size range.

Conclusion

Bactrim remains the treatment of choice for human cyclosporiasis because it has direct clinical evidence in infected patients. Human clinical trials have shown that TMP-SMX successfully treats cyclosporiasis and can shorten average parasite shedding from 12.1 days to 4.8 days.

Curcumin and nano-curcumin, by contrast, have not yet been tested in human patients with cyclosporiasis. Their evidence for this infection currently comes from this animal study.

However, given turmeric and curcumin’s non-toxic nature even at very high doses and myriad other benefits, I will have it in my arsenal in case of infection. ~Nicolas Hulscher, MPH, epidemiologist

Controlled human trials are now needed to determine whether these striking results can be reproduced in people.

Many thanks to Nicolas Hulscher, MPH, Epidemiologist

Is this the same format of technology used to create the nano particles in the Covid vaccine…the type with the metal framework?

Linda, no – no metal at all. Since I just answered Zoe asking essentially the same thing about TRS, which is a nano-sized mineral (contains no metals), I will just copy and paste my answer to her here:

“Zoe, I have answered this before for a few others. This clinoptilolite zeolite (TRS) has been so thoroughly and repeatedly tested and proven to be extremely helpful for everything from seizures to restoring liver and thyroid function to healthy functioning organs. Start by reading this: https://deeprootsathome.com/why-zeolite-is-so-good-for-cleaning-up-the-body/
We have used TRS consistently for 8 years and have recovered from chronic advanced Lyme, prions, a serious well contamination, post-op to remove all the chemicals in the anesthesia and the meds, and more. Yet, we refused the covid shots because they are not anywhere close to the same thing. And there is NO metal in it at all, unlike the jabs and many drugs.
I believe the critical distinction is whether the nano-particle is negatively charged or positively charged. TRS is a negatively-charged good guy and therefore not toxic or reactive. The nanoparticles Dr. Ana is talking about and worried about are positively-charged nano-sized toxins (like graphene oxide). TRS would help remove them since it is attractive to positively-charged bad guys..
We DO need to cross the blood brain barrier to bind out the horrible things being injected these days that also cross the BBB and are positively-charged and destructive to our brain and neurological tissues (lead, mercury, aluminum, etc.).
This post will also help explain why TRS is better and cleaner and safer than a micron sized product: https://deeprootsathome.com/pbx-vs-trs-siliconaluminum-ratio-lead-content-matter/

It is a valid and important question and I hope I have answered your question – and even one you didn’t ask about! Ha
      Blessings,
      ~Jacque

I have taken a good brand of curcumin for years. It isn’t nano, but it has helped improve my fibromyalgia. Would I have some protection from this parasite? I, also, wash my fruits and veggies in chlorine dioxide water.

My daughter is pregnant, can she use Turmeric Curcumin + Plant-Based Nano Carrier?

Hi, Sherry, if she has any bleeding problems she may not want to use nano-curcumin if it is just for prevention. In India and many other countries where everyone eats a LOT of turmeric, even pregnant women, it is not considered a problem, but that is as food.
While pregnant, out of an abundance of caution, I would just have her consume turmeric as food. See this post for food ideas: https://deeprootsathome.com/how-to-make-use-turmeric-golden-paste/

If this is for cyclospora prevention, food alone should be helpful. If she got cyclospora contamination and then became sick, then I would carefully consider nano-curcumin and do a risk/benefit analysis for her case considering the pregnancy.
We love turmeric/curcumin and it is one of God’s best gifts!
Praying for a blessed pregnancy and birth! ~J

Does ivermectin help with cyclospora? If so, what dose?

Goeel22, cyclospora is a single celled organism.
Rep, Nancy Mace asserted that “Ivermectin solves this problem.” Ivermectin works on roundworms/flatworms and ectoparasites (lice, mites) by binding to ion channels in the cells of these multicellular parasites, leading to their paralysis, expulsion and death.”
Cyclospora is a single cell protozoan that lacks ‌any cells able to bind, so it is not susceptible to ivermectin, they say….
But I wouldn’t hesitate to take Ivm for a few days to address any other freeloaders that one might have picked up with it.
I do know that curcumin (turmeric) is valuable for this task.

Please be VERY CAREFUL when taking Nano Curcumin! I took it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I took it without eating first and it damaged (burned) my stomach lining really bad. I bought a top of the line, very expensive brand, but there were no warnings on the label about taking with food. It has been very painful and I am restricted to a very bland diet for the next 8-10 weeks! No fun!

Charlene, that must have been so painful! However, in all these decades of nursing, I’ve never heard of anything like that, nor has anyone in our family experienced it. We take turmeric away from food most of the time. I do know some are more sensitive to herbs on an empty stomach, but no complaints of “burning”. I pray it heals soon.
Do you think you could have had an ulcerated area already and it landed there and caused more injury?
Can you tell me the brand? Makes me wonder if it is a one-off due to contamination or something not normal.
I wrote this in response to someone a while back who claimed turmeric could ruin you liver. This was my response based on the current research and data of it’s safety:

What dosage/frequency would you recommend or would you use yourself to treat? We believe my MIL has contracted this parasite but the drs won’t do a test because she isn’t currently in a diarrhea episode, if you will. She is still experiencing fatigue, nausea, and lower GI symptoms. She’s lost 15 lbs in about 4 weeks. Would love to get her started on the supplement you’ve suggested!

Kimberly, I cannot recommend your MIL use anything bc I am not a doctor, but I personally would give the nano-curcumin product (Nano-Cur) to my mom under the situation you mentioned and follow the label directions for 7 days. After the first 7 days, she could drop down to 1 dose every 3 or 4 days and once much better, she can stop. The NanoCur product – https://amzn.to/4xohLwE – which I linked in the Cyclospora post. They recommend 2 capsules/d.
I hope that helps, but the decision is yours to make.

My young adult son got the nasty explosive thing recently after eating at a certain fast food place. We tried so many different herbs and ivermectin before my naturopath pointed me to this article and curcumin. I can say first hand this stuff works and after only a couple days he’s doing so much better. He had been dealing with symptoms for almost 3 weeks before he started taking this. Thank you so much for all the information. It truly was so helpful. God bless, Stephanie
