While I’ve used this turmeric for 8 years with “happy” results (no pun intended) for its anti-inflammatory effects and truly amazing Alzheimer-prevention powers, I did not realize turmeric is also a painkiller and natural mood elevator of the first order!
One of the things I love about what I do here at Deep Roots at Home is coming across hard scientific research that points to the safety and efficacy of many of the herbs and plants we have available to us. In many ways, naturally-occurring remedies surpass pharmaceutical drugs especially when we consider the terrible side-effects pharmaceuticals are known for, especially antidepressants.
Downsides of Big Pharma’s Anti-Depressants
• May mask symptoms, and in many cases, create a life-long dependency on the drug.
• Increases the likelihood that a depressed person, especially someone under 25 years old, will feel worse and even commit suicide.
• Sexual dysfunction, reduced sex drive in both men and women, and impotence in men.
• Increases the risk of prematurity in pregnancy and is associated with other birth defects, including autism, according to an article in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
For many more side-effects, see Prozac Addiction. (Meanwhile even with the downsides, Big Pharma’s anti-depressant market alone shows annual profits hovering around $12 billion. This figure is predicted to jump to $13.5 billion by 2018).
Landmark Clinical Trial: Turmeric (Curcumin) vs. Prozac
Once again, research science has confirmed naturally-occurring remedies are best: an excellent recent study published in Phytotherapy Research says that not only is turmeric (curcumin) effective at treating depression, it may even be more effective than some of the most common anti-depressant drugs currently on the market.
While previous studies have, across the board, indicated the effectiveness of turmeric (curcumin) in treating serious depression, this study by researchers with the Department of Pharmacology of Government Medical College in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India, was the first randomized, controlled clinical trial of its kind. They compared the effects of turmeric and Prozac (fluoxetine), both used together and individually, in 60 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD).
“While this study indicates turmeric is equally effective as Prozac, it doesn’t account for the negative effects of Prozac, which boost turmeric’s value considerably. Prozac is known to cause “suicidal ideation or other psychotic disorders,” frightening side-effects that are clearly absent in turmeric use.” (source)
Turmeric: The Most Important Herb?
Indeed, turmeric turns the pharmaceutical-based medical model upside down. Instead of causing side-effects, as is the case for most patented pharmaceutical medications, turmeric possesses hundreds of potential side benefits, having been empirically established to positively modulate over 160 different physiological pathways in the body.
Turmeric is truly unique in its exceptionally high margin of safety versus the drugs it has been compared with, such as hydrocortisone, ibuprofen, chemotherapy agents, and more.
And nothing within the modern pharmaceutical medicine comes even remotely close to turmeric’s 3,000 year track record of safe use in other cultures. Plus it is readily available to us all…no Rx needed!
Turmeric Is Inexpensive, Effective For Alzheimer’s Disease
Science Confirms Turmeric As Effective As 14 Drugs
Why Turmeric Will Never Get FDA Approval
Despite its vast potential for healing, it will likely never receive FDA approval due to its lack of patentability and therefore profitability. Unless an investor is willing to risk losing the 800+ million dollars that must be spent upfront, the FDA-required multi-phased double-blind, randomized clinical trials will not occur.
For additional details on this rather seedy arrangement read this article on the topic: Why The Law Forbids The Medicinal Use of Natural Substances.
It is an interesting footnote in American history that shortly after the Declaration of Independence, Congress declared that natural substances, as in plants or minerals or water, were God’s gift to mankind and that products of nature should be limited in their patent protection. While this was a thoughtful declaration, it has actually been used against those whose rights it would protect.
5000 + Recognized Scientific Studies Are Proof {Medical Database at Your Fingertips}
YOU can search and review over 5,000 study abstracts on turmeric or curcumin from the National Library of Medicine’s bibliographic database PubMed, as well as over 600 potential health benefits of turmeric or its primary polyphenol known as curcumin.
Some of the most amazing demonstrated properties include:
• Destroying Cancer Stem Cells (arguably, the root of all cancer)
• Protecting Against Radiation-Induced Damage
• Reducing Unhealthy Levels of Inflammation
• Prevention and Treatment of Liver Disease and Liver Cancer
• Preventing and Reversing Alzheimer’s Disease
SAFETY: When taking and cooking with turmeric, 2 PubMed studies (here and here) show total safety well over 6 grams per day.
Consider the fact that this herb grows freely on earth and is available inexpensively to all, and you will understand why its very existence threatens billions of dollars in pharmaceutical industry revenue. Equipped with knowledge, consumers have the potential to undermine their goal of drugging America and the world.
How I Take Turmeric
Turmeric is one daily supplement in my medicine chest I will never stop taking. I use it one of 3 ways:
1. I buy Turmeric Capsules pre-made and take 2-4/day when traveling or very busy
2. I make my own golden paste.
3. I make my own capsules with organic turmeric and black pepper using a capsule-filling machine.
4. I make a special medicinal bulk tub
I’m so thankful there are safe and logical natural alternatives that do a fabulous job of helping our body to heal itself – all with no side effects.
Warning: Anyone on warfarin (Coumadin) or other anticoagulants should steer clear of turmeric or curcumin except in food quantities. Although this spice has anti-inflammatory properties, it also can magnify the effect of these anti-clotting medications. Doctors in the ‘system’ will always opt for the pharma comparable, so you will likely need to find a functional medical doctor who will be happy to work with you holistically to get you off all the meds!
I believe we can save money and potentially untold grief by staying out of the health care system as we know it today.
“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases…who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” ~Ps. 103:2-5

I’m going to have to try this! I’ve been on anti inflammatory’s for years and hate to think what it’s doing to my stomach. One question, when you make your own do you add anything? Looks like something else is in the bowl….
Jacqueline
Yes, Deborah, I add black pepper to make it more absorbable…up to 2000% moreso…just a little pinch of pepper—1/20th of a teaspoon—can significantly boost levels. I’ll be writing on it soon!
Yes, it works well for me and I think it would for anyone. Powerful anti-infammatory compound!
Blessings to you and yours 🙂
Sharon
Turmeric is fat soluble, so we need to eat a little fat with it so that it can be fully absorbed.
Jacqueline
Sharon, I’w writing that post now…up next! Thanks – You are so right. friend 🙂 And use it with black pepper to Increase bio-availability.
kristin
good morning. i just purchased the turmeric from vita cost you recommended. my mom is 83 and was diagnosed with arthritis this past summer. i hope she will take it- my question is there are SO many kinds out there how do we all know which ones are the best? i belong to sam’s club and costco and wondered how i their’s would compare? thanks. i look fwd to reading more of your website when time allows.. social media takes a lot of time as great as it is. Have a great day and i hope 2016 has been treating you well.
Jacqueline
I would have to say to buy it from a trusted source that is organic. I know the Vitacost source we use so much really works and is convenient, too. http://amzn.to/1LmiZfd
Now that you have purchased the best (other than Bulk Herb Stores organic bulk turmeric -which is their fastest selling herb: http://www.bulkherbstore.com/Turmeric-Root-Powder#a_aid=deeprootsathome), you can do a test if you want to try other brands. I know I will take it for my lifetime.
Blessings!
Becky
Hi Kristin, I use the youtheory brand of turmeric from Costco. Right now we (my old dog and I) take one pill in the morning for stiff achy joints, inflammation and pain. We both have seen an improvement. I can definitely tell if I forget to take it.
kristin
Hi Becky. Thank you for your comment. Approximately how long did it take you to notice the effect? Thank you. My mom has not taken it yet as I want her to consult with her physician bc she takes other prescription medicine that may interefere. Thank you!
Rebekah
Without being ingested with fats it won’t penetrate ALL tissues (organs). Add a teaspoon of coconut oil or if used as a spice add olive oil to the ingredients. These fats literally make the tumeric completely absorb through ALL your tissues.
Jacqueline
Yes! Rebekah, I totally agreewith that. I thought I mentioned to use with fat (Oh! I cover that in the nest post on making Turmeric Golden Paste), so thanks for the heads up to readers of this post! 😀
Heaven
Thank you for this post! My brother suffers from depression and high anxiety. I will pass this information along to my parents. Following on Pinterest!
Jacqueline
Thanks for the follow on Pinterest, Heaven! Anxiety and depression are so hard. Praying for him (and you) now 🙂
I’ll be posting on how to mix turmeric with black pepper to increase bioavailability by 2000% in the next post…
BlessedMama
I use passionflower for anxiety. It is an amazing anti-anxiety herb with no side effects.
Jennifer
This is wonderful information! Thank you for providing the links to info and ordering. I’ve shared this with family members and added to my VC order!
Sharon Kohlbrecher
If a person is presently on an anti-depressant (Zoloft 75mg/day), what would be the proper way to go about switching to Turmeric. I have tried to come off of the Zoloft before and even with extended weaning, have suffered terrible withdrawal systems. I would appreciate any insight you might have as I still want to be free of this chemical anti-depressant.
Sharon
Jacqueline
Sharon,
I’ve located two sites that give information on withdrawl: http://wp.rxisk.org/antidepressant-withdrawal-vs-story/ and
http://www.itmonline.org/arts/ssri.htm
If I see anything helpful, I’ll add it here later.
Praying for you!
Diana
Do you know of any side effects from the turmeric or interaction with any prescription drugs? I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and would like to try the turmeric but am on several other drugs.
Thanks for your information.
Jacqueline
Diana, I found this page on drugs.com which may be helpful:
http://www.drugs.com/npc/turmeric.html
I have found relief with turmeric and pray you can, too.
I am going to be posting on how to combine it with blk pepper and olive oil for a boost in bio-availability up to 2000% in the next post.
Blessings!
Wilma
What about coconut oil?
Jacqueline
Wilma, coconut oil is so great for so many things, but Turmeric is specific for what this post is addressing. See my post here on what coconut oil can do: https://deeprootsathome.com/coconut-oil-for-leaky-gut-candida-and-diabetes/
Janie
Turmeric causes me to have explosive diarrhea, what can I do to keep this from happening?
Jacqueline
Janie, I wish I were able to give you perfect advise. Only thing can recommend is to start with a tiny bit, say 1/8th tsp./ day and see what happens. If you don’t have a problem stay there a while ( a week?) and then go to 1/8th tsp/ twice a day. Test your tolerance by watching your body, and you will know what to do. I hope that helps!
Faith
thanks for posting this! I’m an avid hiker and last summer while on a dance floor woth a church group, I injured my foot resulting in plantar fasciitis that lasted 3 months!! after chiro appts that really did help( ultrasound therapy on the fasciitis bone) and lots of rest, I tried Tumeric ( my bottle says take 8 per day!! but imonly take 2) . it really helped speed up the healing process and after 3 months of inflammation, i am now totally healed of that fasciitis that my doc said would never go away. Credit goes to my chiro who told me about tumeric. my question for you is, do you know how much one should take per day?? how many mg?? I also take calcium with vitamin d every other day, and flaxseed oil capsules with omega 3-6-9 every day. im having trouble finding the info about how much tumeric
Jacqueline
Faith, I have read several credible places that even up to 8,000mg./day (which is considered a large dose) there is no toxicity). I usually take 2,400 mg./day and sometimes don’t know how much b/c I mix up a golden paste and take that on a spoon 🙂 I’m getting read to post on the golden paste later today or tomorrow. It is cool to know it speeds healing, too!
Awesome gift of an herb!
Thanks 🙂
Adrienne
Thanks for sharing this important information! BTW, your title image isn’t available to pin – I think it’s a great pinnable image and thought you’d like to know.
Jacqueline
Thanks for letting me know about the image issue. I appreciate your encouragement, Adrienne 🙂 Btw, I have always appreciated what you do to encourage others through your wonderful blog 🙂
Cheryl
My husband has fatty liver disease, do you feel this could help him? Also, I am on Paxil 40mg x 1 day for 6 years now, would this benefit me too? Thank you for posting this valuable find!
Jacqueline
Yes, Cheryl,
I believe turmeric will help anyone as it modulates everything to balance and support. I truly believe it is the most important herb God gave to man. However, you would be advised to eliminate the underlying cause of fatty liver disease that is *usually* a high sugar intake. Turmeric will help, but the underlying cause needs to be eliminated or it will just be a band-aid: http://drhyman.com/blog/2013/09/26/fatty-liver-90-million-americans/
It will help you with Paxil (though I’m not a doctor) and you can consult your doctor to help you wean after you get feeling better. If your doctor won’t help you, find one that will. Praying for you!
chris
I have been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. I started using one of the popular biologics seen on t.v. commercials. The biologic changed my outlook on life, I could move better, wake up with less pain but the future side effects always was in the back of my mind. To shorten my story, my wife researches different, natural medicines and came across turmeric. I began taking pill form of turmeric and also cutting an actual turmeric root and eating. Within a week the physical/mental aspect of my arthritis was lessening and three weeks in I started increasing the time between my injections of the biologic. Now I haven’t stopped taking the biologic but with advice from my doctor I may try. I don’t write in the Comment sections but the belief in turmeric I had to share.
Jacqueline
THANK YOU, Chris! What a testimony to the power of this awesome, God-given gift! I am praying you will be able to wean off the biologics and in time feel like your old healthy self again! I believe you will succeed…and give my love to your diligent and loving wife!
chris
Jacqueline, Chris from above post. My son, Abraham, has been fighting brain tumors over the last 14 months. He has undergone multiple brain surgeries , because of recurrence, and now is in the 2nd of 6 week of proton/chemo. One dietician has steered us away from turmeric and we have begrudgingly listened. I understand, as you said above that you are not a doctor, but I was curious if you or any of your readers have any experience with the use of turmeric in our situation. Abraham is doing great and has a spirit within him that is a joy everyday to be apart. Again I came across your site today and have never committed on any site, I hope I’m not dropping to much info at once. Thanks
Jacqueline
Oh, no, I am thankful, Chris! I am very blessed that you shared about Abraham and his struggle…we need to bear each other’s burdens. I now can pray for him and your family. My heart goes out to you all. I hope someone will read this and share their take. I will pray that the Lord gives you and the doctors wisdom and insight and peace over this all…also that Abraham’s faith will soar with the grace, presence, and mercy of the Lord and that it will bring Him much glory!
Blessings!
Judy
Don’t forget it’s delicious! Try it in potato soup. I like it in other soups, too. Also, ginger carrots, fried potatos, onions & carrots. I add a half teaspoon to a bowl of soup or beans with a grind of pepper, stir & enjoy!
Jacqueline
Oh, my goodness!! Judy, potato soup has to be one of my favorites…Mom made it so good and yes, the turmeric would make it even better 🙂 I have been adding turmeric and blk pepper to our omelets and fried eggs and no one knows 😉 My body must know curry is good for it…I crave curry dishes 🙂
Thanks for your comment!! Blessings.
REGINA
great post with great comments..can you post the link for your recipe? Anxiously waiting! 🙂
Jacqueline
Coming very soon, Regina 🙂 Hopefully late the 19th, God-willing!
Until then 😉

Maybe I’m just old, but … While I enjoy your postings, I do find it very difficult to read because of the tan and white, swirly background. Could you consider either Channing the background or writing in black, BOLD, fonts?
Jacqueline
Bless your heart, Thor, I AM thinking of doing that..problem is, I’m older, too, and need my daughter’s help to get it done and she’s so busy with the life of a young active woman 🙂 Pray for this to get done…I’d like it very much. Glad you felt free to share your thoughts!
God bless you, sir!
Steph
An interesting find for sure. Is it possible to consume enough through cooking rather than taking as a supplement pill?
Jacqueline
Hi, Steph,
Good question.
Probably if you eat turmeric-added recipes several times a day as your absorption levels would be higher ()better absorption and bio-availability) due to blk pepper and oils in the cooking, but most default to capsules b/c they will be getting consistent levels day after day. I do both (capsules and cooking) to get as much as I can b/c I definitely feel better the more I get. http://amzn.to/1fp0BXz
8,000mg./day is considered a high dose, but shows no toxicity in the studies done 🙂
Charlotte Moore
Great info for sure. I just found out recently about turmeric.
BLESSINGS!!
Shari
Does this need to be consumed daily to be effective? Is it something I could use like Advil and take as needed to cramps or a headache?
Jacqueline
For those with chronic pain, it can be taken daily, Shari, but I know many who take turmeric with pepper (how to coming in next post) as needed (PRN). We used it last night to help my son with poison sumac sleep. It worked like a charm (not putting him to sleep but removing so much pain and itch that he could!) Praise God! 🙂
Shari
Good to know! Thank you!!!!!
Su
How long before seeing positives from the turmeric. I have capsules and “ir”regularly take once/day. Would I possibly see more benefit from twice a day(in your opinion)? Do you think it will bother my IBS and chronic gastritis?(ugh) thx! You’re blog is terrific.
Jacqueline
Thanks, Su, for the encouragement 🙂
Well, anecdotally, I have a dear friend who has been very sick, ie. Lyme’s we think, and fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and she homeschools. She just couldn’t get out of bed, and she asked me what 2 *easy* things she could take (supplements) that would help her the most to get through the day. I recommended the turmeric (2 in AM and 2 PM) I take when I’m not making my own capsules: http://amzn.to/1ft1jTJ
and I told her about niacinamide which is amazing and anti-aging stuff (I’ve used it for 5 years now and can’t tell you enough good things about it!!) http://amzn.to/1ft1UVb
Bottom line, she called me in 2 (yes, 2) days and said she felt pretty good and so good in fact that she wakes up the children now instead of the other way around!
I would start with turmeric 1 cap AM and 1 PM and see how you tolerate it. It has been very helpful for people with IBS.Just read this the other day: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-146963/Could-turmeric-cure-IBS.html
I hope it helps you. May God bless you 🙂
Su
Thank you for responding to me. I don’t comment often on blogs; however, when I do it is so uplifting when someone actually replies to me! I will try the turmeric as you suggested. Also, I am going to order the Niacinamide and try it. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The “traditional” doctor just is not much help. Maybe you or a reader has an idea for when I have an “attack” (pain, bloating, extreme discomfort). It can last all day sometimes and if I had something to take for a more immediate relief, that would be a blessing. (I’ve tried slippery elm and ginger, btw)
Thank you so very much for your time. Have a great weekend.
Erin
Earlier this year you responded to my question about autoimmune disorders-you advised turmeric and niacinamide. I use both and feel great-I’m so grateful that you took the time to respond :-). As I started taking methimizole at the same time, I wasn’t sure what was helping me feel better, meds or supplements. However, in two months time my doctor cut my dose in half, then in half again. My thyroid very quickly went from hyper to slightly hypo:perhaps the turmeric normalized my thyroid a bit? At a very low dose of methimizole I am doing pretty well.
Our family of eight is moving to a new home in one week,I started waitressing a few nights a week after 15 years at home and my husband lost his job of twenty years. The fact that I haven’t had a total panic attack or unleashed in a fit of “Graves Rage” while on such a low dose tells me that the turmeric must be helping my body regulate and not attack itself.
Thank you!
Jacqueline
Well, Erin, I’m not surprised, but must say a huge “Praise to the Lord who give us all good things!” Yay! I LOVE these wonderful testimonials.
Thank you for sharing this with us all!!!
I aam praying now for your husband to find a job, but believe the Lord has gone before you with getting you in a much better place for the time being! Stand firm, dear one…the Lord Jesus will see you all through!
Kathleen
Another great post. I found the video very interesting too. Looking forward to more of your post here on Fridays Blog Booster Party #20
Kathleen

Does anyone have suggestions of what I can take/do when I am having and “attack” of bloating, distention, pain, etc? I have tried slippery elm and ginger to no avail. I do not want to take the prescription the doctor gave me(I try not to take prescriptions if possible). Any ideas would be appreciated. Sometimes the pain and discomfort can last a whole day.
Erin
That happens to me sometimes-what has worked for me is peppermint essential oil, rubbed clockwise on my stomach. Kind of a circle around my navel. For gallbladder issues, I eat pickled beets. It really helps.
Jacqueline
Funny, Erin,
I was having painful cramps in my thighs (charlie horses like a football player 😉 and drank fermented dill pickle juice and they went away…I made the brine with sea salt (all those balanced minerals!) and covered the pickles, added fresh dill and now I can drink the juice to get rid of cramps!! Also, my son has terrible poison sumac and has been eating fresh cooked beets and drinking the broth (excellent blood cleaner for PI, POak, and PSumac) they were cooked in. The beets keep it from spreading in the blood and becoming systemic. Also, he’s taking turmeric which has kept his inflammation down!
I’m still praying for you, your move and all the health issues! Love you sister!!
Erin
Thank you so much!
Vicky Fiedler
Could this help with high blood pressure and how would I mix the paste for this. Have tried alot of alternatives but can’t seem to find anything that works. Refuse to take medications that my doctor prescribes because the side affects are worse than the blood pressure problems. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Jacqueline
Vicky, I think this post will help you in the area of B/P. This post contains HOW to make the paste and 7 ways to get turmeric in your diet and also links for the pre-made capsules I use and recommend of adding it to food or making a tea, etc. seems to cumbersome. http://www.naturalnews.com/038567_blood_pressure_natural_remedies_foods.html
God bless you and I hope you will find this as helpful as we do!
Melody Brummett
I have tried the Tumeric Extract CurcuminC3 complex for 2 weeks how long does it take to start working?( 2 1160 mg)I have depression and inflammatory issues ..thank u
Melody
Jacqueline
Melody, it should help, but as with all other medication, you can do other things too which all work together to get maximum benefit. I personally use 2 twice a day for a total of 4. I also use niacinamide to boost its value (anti-aging) and get VERY nice results! I have several friends who I know personally who wouldn’t be without them both. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): http://amzn.to/1JuSXpr I take 2 twice a day as well. Hang in there. You didn’t get where you are over night and it will likely take a while to reverse some of the effects both depression and inflam..
I’m praying for you!
Melody Brummett
Thank you so much I appreciate your prayers and advice …I am trying to do more natural things and stay away form Pharm…Do u have any advice for High Cholesterol?
Jacqueline
Melody, you might check this out and look for other articles and studies…lowering cholesterol is one of the benefits of turmeric: http://www.naturalhealthadvisory.com/daily/cholesterol-control/how-to-lower-ldl-naturally-one-of-multiple-turmeric-benefits/ I hope that is helpful.
Melody Brummett
Thank you I will def check this out
Melissa
Hi there, thank you for your great post! I am about to start using Tumeric supplements instead of warfarin so nice to know about all the other benefits! Just a warning for people who do take any blood thinning medication that Tumeric and Ginger both have blood thinning properties and may be dangerous when taken in conjunction with any blood thinning medication.
Jacqueline
It can be done but carefully and with knowledge, preferably under a doctors care. Thanks, Melissa 🙂
kathy
would this be helpful for my 20 year old daughter’s monthly cramps? She usually takes ibupropen, but would love a natural alternative. Her cramps are severe. Thanks so much.
Jacqueline
Yes, it helps (d.d.) SO much! Start capsules or turmeric tea and sip through day, etc. at the first sign and she may not even get them…it is so individual.
Did you see this post?: https://deeprootsathome.com/how-to-make-use-turmeric-golden-paste/ This should really help 🙂
Jeannette
I tried turmeric briefly, trying to help with the discomfort of torn cartilage. I am in my 50’s, and I felt like it really increased my hot flashes. With all its benefits, I’d like to try again. Any insight on making it more tolerable? Or is that unlikely to have been the cause? I am very sensitive to spices and drugs in general. I have heard this many times,”nobody ever reacts that way (like you did)…” 🙁
Jacqueline
Jeanette,
Yes, there are people who react differently to anything, and turmeric would be no different 🙂 I wish I had ideas, but I would encourage you to do a trial in a week or so and see if the rxn is the same. Take it with food. Praying you find a ‘sweet spot’! Hugs!
Jeannette
I did try it again, and I’m glad I did! I can’t really tell a difference in my wrist pain yet, but I have not noticed an increase in hot flashes either. Something else must have caused that. My husband has anxiety and right now also has plantar fasciitis, so we are both using it. He was skeptical, but he does not like taking medications long-term. So the aspect of it being all natural does appeal to him. I trust it will help us both, since it has so many healing properties. Thank you for your blog, God bless you!
Jacqueline
Yay, Jeannette! I am praying you BOTH experience the long-lasting healthful effects of turmeric! God’s gifts cannot be beat! 🙂
Thank you so much for getting back with me on your findings!
Amy
Hello. I stumbled upon your blog and love it! Do you have any suggestions or tips on how to take turmeric for migraines?
Jacqueline
Yes, Amy, and Thank you!
Scientists now tell us that turmeric is anti-inflammatory, in that it can reduce pain and fever, much like Tylenol or Ibuprofen: https://deeprootsathome.com/how-to-make-use-turmeric-golden-paste/ You can make it any of these ways, but for chronic pain it needs to be taken regularly just like a medication would be regular. I hope that helps! We have not done it for headaches but use it frequently for muscle strain, back pulls, and for better mood 🙂
Martha
After reading your story I will be using turmeric on a more regular basis. Thank you for writing this article.
Jacqueline
You are welcome, Martha! I will probably never stop using it 🙂
Blessings to you!
Heather
I recently purchased some bulk turmeric from WinCo in Ventura. I have read numerous statements regarding it’s many health benefits. I was excited to try it! I read to use about a teaspoon in about 2 cups of warm water with honey and a little black pepper (to help with absorption). Not long after drinking my “concoction” I found myself violently vomiting all night long!!! Is it possible that I am allergic to it? Or do you think I got a bad batch? I don’t know what to think. I want to try it again, but am a bit leary of the outcome! I appreciate any and all comments and suggestions regarding my issue. Thank you!
Jacqueline
Heather, I have not heard of anyone allergic to it before, but there is always the first time…I’m sure it’s possible. I would try another source (just organic turmeric at the supermarket so it isn’t going to cost much). Do it first without the blk pepper or naything else so you know it can’t be anything else. Only sip a bit after a light meal – not an empty stomach (mixed in water) and wait. It may well have been a fluke. I pray that it was. It is amazing stuff if you can do it!
Catherine
Hello Jacqueline, thank you for your fascinating article on tumeric benefits. I was at a 40mg dose of Prozac but am now currently taking a 60mg dose. I desperately want to get off of it because of the extreme tiredness that I’ve struggled with ever since I was prescribed it several years ago. The increased dose has relieved some of the tiredness, but I still have other side effects (ringing of the ears, vertigo, restless leg syndrome,..). I read the posts that you recommended to Sharon back on August 17th…and now I’m really worried! Lol! What a mess all this is! I have 4 children ranging from teens to tots and the withdrawal symptoms are duanting to face! Ugh! But I guess my question is this, if I started taking the tumeric and decreased my dosage by 5mg per week would the benefits of the tumeric help with the withdrawal symptoms? I understand natural is always best…I’m just hoping for the sake of my husband and children that the tumeric will lessen the affects….! And I’m praying for God’s guidance with all this!!!!! Thank you for your time and for your “ear”!
Jacqueline
Hi, Catherine,
I can’t give you advice, but I can tell you what I would do for myself or a family member.
I personally would use a turmeric product with piperine added (blk pepper for bioavailability). I take this product, 4 caps daily: http://amzn.to/1Z5WLCK I would start taking approx. 2 capsules 8A and 2 at 8P to spread out the dose = ~4,500mg/d). I’d do this with the Prozac for a week and note how your body responds. You can also start at half that dosage. I often increase or decrease according to how I feel.
I would wean like you said, 5 mg/wk. until you get back to 40 mg dose. If you are getting benefit, keep going slowly and when you see your doctor next, tell him what you are doing and that you want to cut back to 20mg and then off. I believe he will support you if he’s a good doctor.
I will recommend one more thing and a very inexpensive and effective supplement that has helped many of my friends in conjunction with turmeric. Niacinamide is simply amazing for so many reasons: http://www.prohealth.com/library/showarticle.cfm?libid=16953
You mentioned extreme tiredness/exhaustion. This is what I have used for years at 4- 500mg caps/day (2 AM and PM): http://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-niacinamide-vitamin-b-3-500-mg-200-capsules-1?ci_src=14110925&ci_sku=835003001149&csrc=SITEREF-linkshare
I hope this is a blessing and am praying now for you to have wisdom in the Lord (Also praying for Sharon!)
May the Lord bless you, dear wife and mother!

Hi Jacqueline,
I have a son that is 12 years old, he was diagnosed with UC (ulcerative colitis) when he was 10. He has been on a few different medications but still having issues. Right now he is taking Imuran and has just started Remicade infusions, next week will be his fourth infusion he goes every eight weeks right now. Do you know if turmeric can help with all the inflammation caused by the colitis? Also, what dosage would be recommended for a child?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much,
Christine

I have been referred to turmeric by a friend. She cannot use it as she has a pacemaker and her heart is very difficult. I have been a hairstylist for forty years. About eight years ago , before I retired I began having restless legs syndrome. Now my thighs just burn and my hands, wrists and shoulders are keeping me from a good night sleep. I do not want to go to my Doctor as all they ever do is give me more drugs. I have high blood pressure, Cholesterol, (familial). I have six siblings and we all have both. Our dad had severe congestive heart disease accompanied by both afflictions. Can I start taking turmeric and in time begin to drop the chemicals? I understand your disclaimer but I also believe no one knows my body like me. I eat a good diet. I exercise as much as my legs will let me. I am done with chemicals…one day I will write you and let you in on what occurred in my life when I came down with severe postpartum phycosis. I met Jesus then and have been blessed ever since. 1Cor10:13
Jacqueline
Hello, Linda!
Yes, we do know that turmeric is safe even at 8,000 mg. and as for drug interactions, here are those you might watch for: https://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb-interaction/possible-interactions-with-turmeric There aren’t many. As I understand it, turmeric helps us so much that the drug dosages DO need to be reduced b/c you won’t need as much. If it was me, I would start at 1 tsp. a day and slowly go from there. Do talk to your doctor as you see success and tell him you want to wean off the pharmaceuticals! To proceed, see “DOSAGE FOR TURMERIC GOLDEN PASTE” in this post to make your own: https://deeprootsathome.com/how-to-make-use-turmeric-golden-paste/
I apologize I am late in replying… We’ve been away for 5 days!
God bless you, dear one, and I would love to hear your story when you get time!

I have seen some people reporting that they have had hair loss from turmeric. Any experience or confirmation of that?
Jacqueline
Turmeric is actually undergoing studies for the potential to help hair grow, Teresa. Maybe this will help: https://www.turmeric.com/skin-beauty/can-turmeric-stop-hair-loss

After NUMEROUS trial & errors I realised that a few spoonfuls of turmeric+honey a day fight early symptoms of cold than any medicine ever can! It’s my go to solution!

Great post! I recently started taking Turmeric, but I need to take it more regularly. My brother ordered some root and has planted it. This post will be featured next Tuesday on my next link up party for sure! This is excellent information!

Thank you so much for the clear and concise info. There is so much out there that it becomes overwhelming but you have captured so many details and made it easy to digest (pun intended). Your research makes me realize I made a good choice for myself being a cancer survivor not to mention the other benefits of tumeric. I wish I’d had known about tumeric when my mom was diagnosed with altzheimer. I also look forward to making my own capsules. There is no disease on this earth that God did not provide a natural remedy for.
Thank you again and God Bless you and your family.
Jacqueline
Cheryl, God bless YOU! You speak the truth when you said there is no disease that God did not provide a natural remedy for! I pray you will prosper and be in good health even as your soul prospers, friend! (((Hugs!)))

Thank you for this article. It seems like a very useful supplement!

I was told I had high cholesterol and needed to start on meds. I would rather to start something naturally. I have read bad side effects to the statins. Is turmeric something that can be used to help lower the cholsterol? If so what would be a good regimen to start.
Jacqueline
Michelle, here is good news for you, friend! Turmeric benefits your body in many more ways than just lowering LDL cholesterol naturally—it also prevents cholesterol’s dangerous effects on your heart and blood vessel walls. http://www.naturalhealthadvisory.com/daily/cholesterol-control/how-to-lower-ldl-naturally-one-of-multiple-turmeric-benefits/
I buy Turmeric Capsules pre-made and take 2-3/day http://amzn.to/1qwLnpY
OR I make golden paste. This is what our whole family is doing presently: https://deeprootsathome.com/how-to-make-use-turmeric-golden-paste/ See the dosage info near the bottom of the post, and I trust you will find this very helpful!
God bless you.

Hi Jacqueline,
I am fascinated by your article, and finding hope after a nearly lifelong struggle to get off, and stay off antidepressants for good. Recently, I started a “new” antidepressant, in January; in hopes of finding one that REALLY doesn’t cause weight gain or sexual side Effects, (these 2 topics are non-negotiable for me,and really am starting to believe that they just do not exist for me,) I stumbled across an article on Mark’s Daily Apple in regards to iodine deficiency and a big domino effect, with that leading to thyroid issues, and ultimately depression, and prescriptions for antidepressants for some. And how taking a supplement such as Kelp, can help correct the problem at the root cause, thus stopping this vicious cycle. (I wish I could find the link to that article, but cannot.) I have now started to wean off my antidepressant slowly and i have started the kelp at 325 mcg at bed, in addition to a cal-mag-zinc supplement.
So, My question is: Do you think adding a turmeric supplement could be beneficial to my new little regimen? I know sometimes, too many supplements can be harmful.
Just curious if you are aware of any potential dangers in mixing these together.
Great Article by the way. I feel as if God is hearing the cry of my heart to truly be free of big pharma, by putting other resources in my path. I hope I have just stumbled upon another one.
Thank you,
Tamatha
Jacqueline
Thank you, Tamatha! I have a feeling you are on the right track and you are sooo wise to work to get off the antidepressants! I trust you can and will do that.
Here are two articles I found that might be helpful in pointing you in the right direction: http://www.livestrong.com/article/518313-turmeric-the-thyroid/ and http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/turmeric-index.html?filter=1&generic_only= Kelp is not listed in the second article.
I hope these help, and I will pray the Lord leads you with wisdom and in peace.
Tamatha
Just an update:
Hi, since I wrote my comment on May 11, 2016, I began taking turmeric 1100 + 60 MCG at bedtime, for my depression.
I Have to tell you, I felt almost immediate relief and results. I also definitely have a lifting of brain fog that has been with me for years. It’s quite remarkable and tumeric now has become a steady supplement at bed.
I still am taking my cal-mag- zinc, it truly does help my sleep; and only occasionally taking the kelp now, since I’m just not sure if I need it.
If I miss one day of tumeric, I feel the difference, and as soon as I take the tumeric, within an hour I feel a calming Wellness effect. It’s shocking indeed.
I have now weaned off my antidepressant and I’m working hard to get this additional 15 pounds of weight off that I’ve gained. I seem to be resistant to that still. But I feel so much better, so I just wanted to thank you for your article and I think I’m going to add another dose in the morning.
God bless you Jacqueline..
Tamatha
Jacqueline
Tamatha!!!!!! That’s wonderful news to me and makes my day 🙂 It is obvious in your tone that you are thriving (and off the antidepressant). I am so happy and do hope it is a great help to many more who have found themselves seemingly tied to a drug forever. Turmeric is really a gift to us all. Thank you for responding and sharing your results! Can you tell me what brand you are using and the dosage again?
I will agree with you in prayer that the Lord will show you a way to lose that extra weight!
Tamatha Pope
Thank you! And Amen!
I think I will try vitacosts brand next;
But, this months bottle was a brand called ” Radiance” platinum.

Amazing!
Jacqueline
Michele, it really is amazing since it still works for me after 2 years and counting. I use it regularly to maintain blood levels.
Blessings!

Hi Jacqueline. I have a hip joint ppressure sensitivity probel and osteo arthritis in my hip and lower back. Enough to cause continual pain in my hips, radial pain down my legs and in my back, though not enough according to my surgeon to warrant hip replacement. To allow me any kind of consistent mobility over the last two years I have been eating straight codeine, naproxen and get injections of a steroid/anatsheic directly into the hip joint (lasts 2-3 months). This past December I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, had the surgery all is good. Time for chemo where both my surgeon and oncologist took away the naproxen as the chemo drugs are hard enough on your guts.I asked for an alternative and was told there was none.
Determined not to be crippled by this I started doing research and came across turmeric. Sounded too good t be true so I discussed it with a few homeopaths and natural medicine practitioners – who agreed it might be helpful, and then I found out that several of my friends who had already had hip replacements were already taking turmeric daily for its anti-inflammatory properties. So I bought a bottle in mid february 2016 and started taking them twice a day.
In 1 month almost three quarters of the daily radial pain in my hip and back was gone unless I overdid myself. I had cut my codeine intake in half. In addition my hand arthritis quit aching and as a type 2 diabetic, the constant pain I had had for 4 years in my shins was also gone.
I had continued to research natural remedies and in early March began taking a salmon based fish oil supplement twice a day and increased my cinnamon intake considerably. 4 months into my chemo I am taking no pain meds. I have not needed another steroidal hip injection in my right hip since November, and my left since mid February.
I make my own capsules now with organic turmeric but was unaware that black pepper would increase their effectiveness. I would be interested to know proportions turmeric to pepper.
In my happiness at my renewed mobility I have gotten several of my friends with a variety of inflammatory problems to also take turmeric, or turmeric and fishoil. I am happy to say that one case of sciattica has not been evident for several months now, another friend with back pain is free from the daily ache and my daughter’s daily pain from a rotator cuff problem is also significantly reduced. And I am busy convincing people to eat more fish, and cinnamon to whatever they can and add ginger to their food on a regular basis if they don’t wish to take supplements.
Jacqueline
Oh, boy, DK, that has made my day:) What a blessing it is to you and your friends! I knew it was good, but I didn’t know just How Good 😀 I’d love it if you would refer them to the post for directions for blk pepper and turmeric ratio, etc.: https://deeprootsathome.com/how-to-make-use-turmeric-golden-paste/ Everything you shuld need to know is in this post. I am so thankful that you are feeling so much better and may the Lord completely heal you of all cancer and pain! May He continue to use you to help so many!!
Blessings 🙂

Thanks for the quick reply as I’m off to the health food store for spice tomorrow. Much appreciated. Will add the pepper and see if the difference is noticeable. Also, I have made up a batch of cinnamon spread that can be put on toast croissants, oatmeal or other hot cereals, or just eaten off a spoon (bad dk) Simple to make 1 cup butter, 1/2 C ceylon cinnamon and 1/2 C demerara sugar, cream together and adjust for preferred consistency. I also sprinkle in a bit of ginger and a bit of turmeric for me. It’s tasty and each TBsp gives you 2 tsp of cinnamon.
Diane
Can you replace the black pepper with cayenne pepper for the same results?
Thank you for your informative article ?
Jacqueline
No, Diane, it should be black pepper. You can try Googling that, but I doubt it 🙂

Hi Jacqueline,
I just ordered some turmeric powder. A little about my story…We were foster parents for 2 1/2 years for 3 girls. One left after a year and a half the other 2 were half sisters. One of those sisters we had for the full 2 1/2 years and her sister came to us as a newborn and when they went home she was 18 months. They left almost 2 months ago. During those years I gave 100% of myself to those girls. The grief I have experienced has been difficult. The Lord has blessed me with more time with my husband and 11 year old daughter so I do have some peace and joy. But I am having a difficult time getting healthy again. The baby didn’t sleep very well for her first year. I’d jump out of bed 10 times a night to quiet her before she woke everyone. I could feel adrenaline dump into my system every time I had to jump out of bed. During the months leading up to their departure I had headaches and terrible stomach cramps. Recently I have cut back on carbs and have added liver supplements, spirulina and apple cider vinegar to my daily intake. I have always been low energy, but I feel like the more I am trying to heal my body the worse I feel. Since it’s summer I can rest a lot but when school starts I have to homeschool and create a daily schedule. I feel like maybe I am still processing this grief and depressed under the surface. Do you think turmeric will help me?
Jacqueline
Hi, Cindy!
My heart goes out to you and also thanks that you have such a servant’s heart, loving others well. Still you must take care of yourself, and I hear in your words that you intend to! The Lord will guide you and already is.
Turmeric is not a fad, but one of his wonderful arsenal of plant gifts for healing. I love the other things you are using including reducing carbs, as well. I use alongside niacinamide (this and turmeric together are powerful restoratives for me), ginseng and ALA/ALC as I mention in ‘MY MEDICINE CABINET ANTI-AGING FAVORITES’ down at the bottom of this post: https://deeprootsathome.com/complete-guide-side-effect-medicine-cabinet/
It is my experience that turmeric absolutely will help both with inflammation and stress. The key is consistency as it also is with a drug. Blood levels need to be pretty much consistent. Work to calm it, and you can regain your equilibrium. This is not a guarantee, but an educated guess.
On the niacinamide, I take 250-500 mg. 4 times a day spread out. http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=103334;p=0
I am praying for your health to rebound and for your homeschool year. I trust as you seek the Lord for leading, it will be relaxed and enriching for your daughter and you. She is a blessed girl! Do let me know how you do, friend!

Fascinating post, Jacqueline! The case studies in the video are pretty amazing. I recently started taking a turmeric supplement to prevent inflammation at my chiropractor’s suggestion. I hope it’s a good brand – Schwartz Bioresearch Premium Ultra Pure Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperine. I suppose I could eat turmeric every day, but I think I’d rather take it as a supplement as long as it’s just as effective. Anyway, thank for the great information. I will be pinning and sharing this post on my Facebook page!

Dear Jacqueline,
I have been taking roughly 3,000mg of my own capsules of turmeric for several weeks now. After the first week I realized that while I still had some grief over my girls leaving and their new (lack of) quality of life, I felt better. The raw edges of my grief were smoothed out. The deep down hurt and despair have left me. I am so thankful. I still have some weepy moments, but the difference in the severity is very noticeable.
I am so thankful for your website and all that you do.
Cindy
Jacqueline
I am so thankful you shared that! It blesses my heart to be able to help in this way!! Praise God for His mercies! Hugs! PS I understand the pain. My only daughter will be marrying soon and moving to Oregon alllll the way across the country.

Thank You:)

Turmeric is very spicy and I have heartburn. Will this irritate it even more for I’d love to try it. Thank you for this informative article.
Jacqueline
Heather, I’d love to tell you it will be fine, but as you know , we are all individuals. I wish you lived close and I would give you 4 or 5 capsules to try, say one a day. The capsules I take (http://amzn.to/2ep5h3U) (if I’m not doing the bulk powder with cocoa, etc) are so easy and I usually take them with a meal so you may never even notice them. Most don’t. I wish you good success and hope this is helpful!
Blessings!

Personally, I swear by the use of Turmeric. At first, when I started using it, I was extremely skeptical, because you know, there are so many overhyped products and ingredients out there.
I started digging around online and researched several websites such as Examine,
Supplementsreviewer, and Healthline. I quickly noticed that it was a product that could really offer a wide variety of benefits and here I am a few years later feeling amazing!
A tip for all of you lovely readers – It is a good idea to buy turmeric powder in bulk and put it in capsules yourself. It saves a lot of money, and it’s effortless to do.
Jacqueline
Greg! I agree! That is what we do and I wrote a post on the recipe with options: https://deeprootsathome.com/anti-inflammatory-turmeric-spices-bulk-mix-recipe-users-guide/
Thanks for your personal story!!

I absolutely love and appreciate your wisdom in natural alternatives to medicines and ways to prevent the need for medicines. I am soooooo disappointed in the care our family received during the cov** issues and am looking for a doctor that will actually try to keep us healthy and not just medicate symptoms. Hard to find. Keep this coming.
Jacqueline
Sheila, I am so sad that happened and continues to happen. There are ways to STOP if from happening. Read this:

Hello Jacquelin- I took your advice on this post about Turmeric and have been using it faithfully for awhile now with great results.. I am trying to find a complete and reliable multi-vitamin for women over 50 and I searched your blog in hopes to find some suggestions, but could find nothing.
Do you have any advice or info on a multi Vitamin for women you have either had good personal experience with, or have seen positive reviews on?
I would appreciate any thoughts or direction you could share..
I so appreciate all your help and wisdom.
God Bless You=
