Dr. Adam Urato, with a specialty is Maternal & Fetal Medicine, is often featured in Boston Magazine and is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 10 years. He is gravely concerned by the lack of informed consent given to pregnant women concerning their medications.
Namely, SSRI antidepressants, but also Zofran.
[Please know this is NOT a judgement of you if you or someone in your family is on one of the antidepressants or you are a pharmacist. It is also NOT a condemnation of all medicines, either, but rather it is a warning to stay aware of drug facts and dangerous side-effects].
“The main one I’m focusing on currently is the use of antidepressants during pregnancy, because we’re seeing so much of that in the general population, but in particular, in pregnancy.” Urato tells BlazeTV host Allie Beth Stuckey on “Relatable.”
“I tell my patients that medications are chemicals. They’re not naturally occurring substances. They’re not like oranges growing on an orange tree. They’re synthesized in a chemical manufacturing facility,” he explains, noting that in any manufacturing plant, you’ll see workers wearing masks and goggles for a reason.
The 2 most important sections for moms to understand —especially before they consider pregnancy— are: 1. ‘Medication safety in pregnancy’ starting at 15:20 (including Zofran for nausea discussed at 17:58) and 2. ‘SSRI effects on fetal development’ starting at 34:45.
What About Zofran For Nausea?
“Virtually any medications that the mom takes are going to cross over from the mom into the baby.”
“A drug like Zofran, originally developed to combat nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy, is also prescribed for nausea during pregnancy. It involves blocking serotonin receptors in the brain and gut. Yet, serotonin is a crucial cell-signaling molecule orchestrating much of fetal development.”
“So if you’ve got this delicate, intricate developing system, that relies on serotonin signalling and other neurotransmitters,” Dr. Urato continues, “and then you disrupt it with chemicals like Zofran or like the SSRI antidepressants, it’s going to have a negative impact.“
Even Worse For the SSRIs…
“There’s evidence, for example, that patients on SSRI antidepressants have increased rates of bleeding,” he states, explaining SSRIs have a huge impact on platelet function, and it can complicate bleeding during birth.
The drugs also have a great impact on bone strength, which leaves many SSRI patients with a higher rate of fractures in their bones and higher rates of osteoporosis.
But it gets worse.
“We’re seeing increased rates of miscarriage, so the woman loses her pregnancy.
We’re seeing increased rates of birth defects… things like heart defects,” Urato explains.
“We’re seeing increased rates in preterm birth… increased rates of low birth weight babies, small for size; they didn’t grow well likely because of the impact of the drugs on the placenta late in pregnancy.”
“We see an increase in pre-eclampsia, which causes high blood pressure in women, and proteinuria, protein in the urine,” he continues.
“We see higher rates of postpartum hemorrhage …one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality,” he adds.
Then there’s what happens to the babies.
SSRIs cross both the placental and blood-brain barriers, meaning that these elevated levels could impact a developing baby’s neurological growth. “Furthermore, the doses of these medications appear to be sufficient to have neurological effects on the developing fetus, since these babies show clear signs of anti-depressant withdrawal for up to a month after birth.” [1] [2]
Allie Beth asks, “Do SSRIs actually heal a chemical imbalance?”
And we can’t skim over the other frightening side-effects that The Midwestern Doctor summarizes here:
• SSRI antidepressants are among the most harmful medications on the market, impacting society due to their widespread (and frequently unjustifiable) use.
• Common side-effects of SSRIs (and SNRIs) include sexual dysfunction (which is often permanent), emotional numbness, severe agitation, violent psychosis, cognitive decline, and birth defects.
• The most concerning SSRI side-effect is their tendency to cause grisly suicides and homicidal violence (which includes mass shootings).

• Psychiatry’s denial of SSRI-related issues often leads to misinterpretation of side-effects as a sign of pre-existing mental illness, resulting in more medication and potentially catastrophic consequences.
• SSRIs, like other stimulant drugs (e.g., cocaine), are highly addictive so many SSRI enter severe withdrawals once they stop them. Unfortunately, few resources exist for these situations.
In 2004, the FDA first initiated a Black Box Warning on SSRIs — its strongest available measure short of withdrawing a drug from the market. The warning is still placed on package inserts for all antidepressants in common use. It mentions the above risks in children, teens and younger adults.

I want to also bring awareness to homeopathy. [I personally often pair TRS with a specific indicated homeopathic or 2 as a support for those I care for]. Many around the world use homeopathy successfully, so we don’t need to jump on the SSRI bandwagon in the first place. In the case of anxiety, depression, etc. this is what is in the Narayani “Tension” remedy:

Dissolve 2-3 pellets of the remedy in the mouth. Tension can be taken 3 times a day for a long period of time. I know some who take it 6 times a day with the best effect. Take pellets (without handling – pop them from cap into mouth), half an hour away from food or drink. Give the remedy time to work. Once you see some results, you may be able to slowly decrease to twice a day.
Homeopathics do not have side-effects and can be used in pregnancy. How is that possible? Because Homeopathy is based on Provings and the Homeopathic Law of Similars. This is an excellent alternative to those who can’t swallow large pills or have digestive problems.
Homeopathic pellets dissolve in your mouth. Through the saliva, they instantly enter your system, bypassing the need for further digestion. Great for those with sensitive digestive systems. Our grandchildren love taking their occasional remedies, with no large capsules to swallow or bad tasting liquids. The taste is mild and sweet.
