For those who believe in natural health, self-reliance, and off-grid preparedness, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is an absolute must-have in your survival stockpile. Equip your family with tools to fight chemical tyranny, and always opt for nature’s solutions over patented poisons.
So deep are the protective, buffering and neutralizing properties of sodium bicarbonate that it is used to protect the kidneys in kidney failure as you will read below. [Researcher Don York has used baking soda to clean soil contaminated with uranium at highly contaminated Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Sodium bicarbonate binds with uranium, separating it from the dirt.] It also protects from chemotherapy agents, which are highly lethal even in low dosages. (source)
And there are LOTS of other savvy uses:
1. Nature’s Antacid and Kidney Alkalinizer
Big Pharma pushes acid-blocking drugs (Proton Pump Inhibitors like Nexium) that wreck your gut and cause bone loss. But baking soda is a natural, safe, and instant remedy for acid reflux, heartburn, and digestive distress.
—Relieves heartburn & acid reflux: Mix ½ tsp in 4 oz water for immediate relief. Sip slowly to neutralize excess HCl in the esophagus. Works within minutes. However, CAUTION: Overuse can upset your electrolyte balance. Use as a supplement to dietary changes, not a daily habit.
—Alkalizes stomach acid (unlike PPIs, which just block acid production): Unlike Nexium, baking soda (or pH Adjust) doesn’t paralyze acid glands, preserving gut flora essential for nutrient absorption. Long-term PPI use is linked to vitamin B12 deficiency and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
—Alkalizes urine to prevent UTIs: Excess acid in urine promotes bacterial growth. For recurrent UTIs, mix ¼ tsp baking soda with water (or use Ph Adjust) once daily preferably between meals. Naturally boosts urine pH.
—Your kidneys are drowning in acid. Too much acidity forces your kidneys into overdrive. Baking soda buffers that acid and slows chronic kidney disease. In this NIH study, chronic kidney disease patients who took this baking soda (or Ph Adjust) had slower progression toward kidney failure. [I use between 1/4 and 1/2 teaspoon in a half cup of water at bedtime and and titrate it (adjust dose) to get the desired 6.8 pH on the test strip. I am soon to post the full protocol I recommend for anyone with a low GFR. It has raised mine from 28 to 48% in 7 months so far.]
—Prevents ammonia burns in overnight diapers: A generous sprinkle of baking soda in baby’s nighttime diaper prevents the smell and the rash in the morning.
—Crush workouts like a pro. Baking soda neutralizes lactic acid builds up that burns so you can push harder and recover faster.
—Baths help with itchy skin, acne, sunburn relief, even support detox: Add 1 – 2 cups of baking soda to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes. It helps draw out impurities, relieve muscle soreness, and balance your skin’s pH levels. I recommend baking soda baths when beginning oral TRS chelation if there is a healing reaction. Combine with milk thistle or dandelion root for synergistic detox support.
2. Home Cleaning: The All-Purpose, Non-Toxic Workhorse
Most “cleaning” products are loaded with endocrine disruptors and toxic chemicals, but baking soda is 100% safe, effective, and dirt-cheap.
—Wash produce: Arguably, a great way to remove toxins from your produce (but Chlorine dioxide by Safrax may actually be slightly better).
A study conducted in 2017 used good old-fashioned baking soda to remove pesticides from produce. The results were shocking. The study found that soaking apples in baking soda for just 15 minutes removed up to 96% of pesticide residues. It outperformed even bleach. Baking Soda breaks down and neutralizes the chemical structure of most pesticides, making them easier to rinse away.
Here’s the step-by-step method:
- Prepare the Solution – Mix one teaspoon of baking soda per 2 cups of pure water in a bowl or basin.
- Soak – Submerge the fruits or vegetables in the solution for 12–15 minutes, and let the baking soda do its thing.
- Wipe and Rinse – For solid foods like apples, oranges, or carrots, wipe surface with a cloth to remove any residues. Then, rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
- Dry with a clean towel – This helps to remove any remaining waste and helps the products stay fresh for longer.
—Oven cleaner: Make a paste with baking soda and water (1:1 ratio) and a few drops of dish soap. Apply overnight, then clean with a damp cloth. Safe for non-stick surfaces.
—Drain de-clogger: Pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain, follow with ½ cup vinegar. Let fizz for 15–20 minutes, then flush with boiling water. Repeat weekly to prevent buildup.
—Grease cutter: Scrub pots and pans with baking soda paste. Mix with a splash of lemon juice for antibacterial action. Use on burnt pans after pre-soaking in water—no toxic chemical cleaners needed.
—Safely remove paint, grease, oil and smoke residue, decreasing workers’ exposure to harsh chemicals and eliminating much of the hazardous waste from other cleaners. (source)
—Removes tough stains: For grass, wine, or mildew stains, apply a paste made with baking soda and water (1:1 ratio) overnight. Washing with hydrogen peroxide works synergistically.
—Softens clothes: Add ½ cup to wash cycle. Boosts fabric softness without toxic dryer sheets that are made with solvents and perfumes. Great for sensitive skin or cloth diapers.
—Freshens carpets: Sprinkle on carpet, let sit 15 minutes, vacuum: Baking soda adsorbs oils and odors like smoke or cooking grease.
—Neutralizes pet smells: Create a pet-stain eliminator with baking soda, white vinegar, and a bit of hydrogen peroxide. Blot leaks immediately, then sprinkle baking soda for odor control. Works better than toxic store-bought products.
3. Health and Beauty Using Baking Soda
Big Beauty wants you addicted to toxic shampoos, deodorants, and toothpastes filled with parabens, aluminum, flavors, dyes and fluoride. But baking soda is a pure, effective alternative that costs pennies per use.
—Whitens teeth: Combine 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and a few drops of peppermint oil to create a paste. Brush daily—it gently abrasives stains without harsh chemicals. Avoid using daily for sensitive teeth.
—Neutralizes bad breath: Gargle twice daily with 1 tsp baking soda in 8 oz warm water. This disrupts the pH balance of bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, the primary cause of halitosis. Studies show this reduces plaque acidity linked to cavities.
—Relieves canker sores: Use a baking soda paste (1:1 ratio with water) on sores for 1–2 minutes twice daily to neutralize acids and speed healing. For severe sores, combine with colloidal silver for added antimicrobial action.
—Eliminates body odor: Apply a baking soda & water paste under arms. For moisture-prone skin, add a drop of essential oil (lavender or tea tree) to soothe. Reapply after sweating.
—Soothes sunburns & rashes: Add ½ cup baking soda to a cool bath to neutralize sunburned skin. For localized rashes, mix with aloe vera to calm inflammation. Avoid using if the skin is broken.
4. Emergency Medicine & First Aid:
When disaster strikes, baking soda could mean the difference between life and death.
—Soothes acid burns (immediately apply baking soda paste): Neutralizes residual acid and reduces tissue damage. Rinse with cold water for 15–30 seconds before following up with aloe vera gel that’s been stored in glass for hydration.
—Reduces radiation toxicity and damage (survival protocol: consume baking soda water): In radiation emergencies, drinking dosed sodium bicarbonate solutions has been used to alkalinize the bloodstream, protecting vital organs from some levels of toxicity. So useful is sodium bicarbonate that at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, researcher Don York has used baking soda to clean soil contaminated with uranium. It binds with uranium, separating it from the dirt; so far, York has removed as much as 92% of the uranium from contaminated soil. (source)
—Bee stings: First, remove the stinger to prevent spreading venom, then apply baking soda paste (diluted 1:1 ratio with water) to draw out venom and reduce swelling.
—Poison ivy: Mix baking soda with a little water to make a paste to stop itching. Relief typically occurs within minutes.
In heavy duty ziplocking plastic bags, baking soda is shelf-stable for years. Pair it with colloidal silver, iodine, salt, and activated charcoal for your survival medic kit.

Thank you for this! We love baking soda and I’m always learning more about it. Baking soda/sea salt baths are my favorite.
TIP – We buy large 50-lb bags of baking soda from our local animal feed store. It’s not food grade, but perfect for baths or cleaning and cheaper than from the grocery store.
We save the food-grade baking soda for internal use – washing produce, tooth powder, etc.
We also buy the big bags of Sea90 sea salt (same brand as the food-grade Baja Gold) and use that for baths and livestock mineral supplement. A friend of ours even uses it in his kitchen. It’s cheaper than the food-grade stuff. You can get both Sea90 and Baja Gold from Azure Standard.
