The discovery that plants respond to homeopathic remedies is fairly new and has become more widespread over the past few years. It is gentle in humans, effective in animals, and that carries over to plants and trees.
[I share this information because it is very practical. We are learning to use this method in our orchard and garden and have had consistent success over and over. (We’ve also revived two of our mama cattle from death this spring and returned them to vigor (partly using homeopathy) after delivering absolutely GIANT bull calves and suffering nerve injury and cervical tears. Long story.)
The book Homeopathy for Plants by Christiane Maute, naturopath and homeopath, has sparked me to get serious with this modality of healing.
It’s a handy guide to find remedies for: leaf spot on roses, black spot, brown (end) rot on tomatoes, fire blight on fruit trees (this was one of our most recent successes), leaf curl, cancer, mildew, snail/slug damage, cabbage worms, aphids, and other pests, or just poor growth. Christiane also explains the tried-and-tested remedies for the most common diseases in houseplants.
Clear and precise instructions are also given to treat plants for the effects of frost, hail, damage, wounds following pruning of trees or bushes, transplant shock, rooting issues, heat damage and the effects of re-potting.
Most diseases are heavily illustrated with pictures in the book, making it easy for a layman to recognize the disease and quickly find the correct remedy.
Dosage and application are clearly described and a compact materia medica of the remedies rounds off the book. The numerous real-life examples added for this comprehensively updated edition demonstrate that homeopathy for plants has now come of age.
“It is often said that one must believe in homeopathy for it to work. As plants cannot do that, there must be something real at work here.” ~from the article ‘Globuli für den Garten’, Country, April 2011
The discovery how homeopathy can help plants came about accidentally:
Christiane Maute has used homeopathic medicine to treat her patients successfully for years. One day, she bought a Delphinium (aka larkspur) at a market and when planting it, she dropped it and snapped the main stalk. She decided she would try Arnica 200. She dissolved a few pellets in water and poured the medicine over it. The following day, it stood upright. At first, she thought this was a coincidence. She hadn’t bandaged it or done anything else to it, so she decided to continue to do tests as needed.
Sometime later, she describes how the cherry tree in her back yard was affected by brown rot tip drought. A fungal disease that was going around in the whole region at the time. The naturopath poured Thuja 200c over it. It had proved to be a good remedy for fungal infections from cold dampness. She reports that the tree recovered quickly, that dry leaves continued to fall but that healthy green restarted growing. A little later she received a call from one of her neighbors wondering what she did to her cherry tree – it was the only one in the neighborhood that still had green leaves!
Finding the correct remedy
The German doctor Samuel Hahnemann who founded the system of homeopathy, saw disease as an alteration of a healthy person’s state of well-being, which expressed itself in the form of symptoms. The questions he asked were: What makes it better? Or worse? What’s the cause? How is the pain, how is the emotional state?
Depending on the corresponding answers, you could be choosing different remedies for similar complaints. But plants cannot be consulted like people can. The only means to make a remedy selection is by examining their symptoms and cause, and to interpret them as accurately as possible using your past knowledge and God-given intuition.
Homeopathic medicines work on plants similarly to how they act on people. For example, Arnica helps with injuries and Thuja with fungal infections.
Determining which remedies work for a plant’s problem is often a matter of experience. A recommendation would be using a remedy that is indicated for a person in the similar circumstance.
The indications in plant homeopathy are surprisingly diverse: Bacteria, viruses, weather damage, fungi, pests and more.
A Few Common Remedies & Applications for Gardeners
Here are some quick examples, but the book has many more:
PLANT SITUATIONS: (transplants, weak or stunted growth, limp or insect infestation)
• Arnica 200c – bruising, damage to root or whole plant or tree (wind or other), improves circulation
• Aconite 200c – shock from transplant, severe pruning, major weather changes
• Calendula 30c – abrasions, cracks and breakage – found to act as an antiseptic, and re-constructively, it makes the plant less prone to disease and bugs.
• Cantharis 30c and Causticum 30c – Fire blight on pear and apple trees (this saved our trees!)
• Carbo Veg 30c – failing or very weakened or wilted plant/fungal issues like tomato blight.
• Calcarea Carbonica 6x – tonic, triggers growth, for stunted growth, failure to thrive, weak stalk
• Cuprum metallicum 30c – for general insect infestation and to prevent fungal infection on grapes, esp.
• Staphisagria 200c – pruning damage, wound, repotting, dividing root ball of large plant
• Silicea 200c – strengthens the plant’s cellular tissue (also: Kali phos 6 or Mag phos 6)
• Thuja 30c / 200c – leaf spot, tomato end rot, powdery mildew, leaf curl, all fungal infestations (tomato blight)
For General Weakness:
- Arsenicum album 200c (plant stays small, after periods of heat and dryness)
- Calcium carbonicum 6x (good fertilizer for lime-deficient soil)
- Kalium phosphoricum 30c (at first lush, then begins to ail)
PESTS: (spray bottle works better for direct contact)
• Helix tosta 6x – slugs
• Cimicifuga 30c – aphids
• Nux vomica 30c – varroa mites on honeybees
• Sulfur 200c – insect infestations: anything that crawls or flies
Dosing & Re-dosing
Normally, use only one remedy at a time, but there are exceptions. Let the pellets dissolve in water, then pour or spray the medicinal water onto the plant and roots.
Avoid using metal spoons to stir the mixture. Do not pour the water over your hands as you may contaminate the remedy.
After you first use a remedy, wait and see how the plant responds. If there is improvement, no further action is required. Re-dose only if the symptoms come back after initial improvement. You may wish to choose a higher potency this time. If the symptoms are not better, then change the remedy, and carefully re-examine the symptoms and causes.
To treat your plants homeopathically, dissolve the pellets in water. Then rain it on the plants, spray it on or pour it in the area of the root ball.
In the treatment of trees it has been found that pouring the medicinal water over the tree trunk and the soil within the radius of the tree crown was effective. Smaller plants can be watered or sprayed.
More Knowledge, Less Pesticides
More and more, home gardeners are favoring homeopathic remedies over pesticides. Seeing mealybugs disappear after being treated with Cimicifuga 30c, for example. These are difficult to combat using even conventional, chemical substances. Or to see Petroleum 30c kill off the robust scale insects die off as if by magic.
Sometimes there are disappointments, too, because the correct remedy is not always obvious at first. But all in all, success speaks for itself. Some horticultural engineers have reported using 90% less chemistry in the past year thanks to homeopathy and plant fortifiers.
It would be great to see this knowledge expand also to full-time farmers. Any reduction in pesticides that poison us and our environment should be applauded. Besides, this offers an economical advantage, because Christiane Maute calculates that 30 liters of homeopathic medicinal water cost no more than $ 0.80. The next book on my list is Homeopathy For Farm and Garden.
‘How To Save a Mighty Oak Tree’ by Joette Calabrese (HMC, PHom M)
Six years ago, we bought a cottage with a beautiful old oak tree in the yard. Our neighbors said the tree was at least 120 years old, according to their parents and grandparents. So, this old oak was a sturdy, resilient tree that had most assuredly been around to witness a thing or two.
However, as you can see from this “before” photo, it was suffering.
I was never quite sure what caused the tree to decline, although consensus seems to point to the next-door neighbors’ installation of a pool. Of course, I’m not an arborist, but judging from the tree’s canopy, the digging and/or leaching chemicals in the gunite or shotcrete probably distressed its roots. And it had been showing signs of distress for years before we moved to there.
No matter the cause, I knew the tree had been crying out for homeopathy, and I think I heard it.
I looked at the circumstances as a vascular injury to the tree. Consequently, I utilized Arnica montana 3C (one of our leading homeopathic remedies for heart and vascular issues).
I also called upon Hyland’s Bioplasma®, a combination remedy comprising all 12 of the cell salts vital to overall wellness. (read more about Bioplasma here.)
If I didn’t have Bioplasma, I would add Silicea 6x to the tree’s water. Silicea 6x is one of the 12 cell salts and is known for addressing a lack of hardiness.
How did I administer the remedies to the tree? I simply dissolved a couple of doses of each in a large pitcher of water and poured the medicine around the base every week for about four months. I’ve kept up with this regimen every summer and fall for the last six years.
If homeopathy were a placebo, my oak tree would have continued to fail until it died. However, over time, it began to thrive once again. I took the following photograph six years after the first photo — almost to the day. What a difference!
This example also serves as an excellent analogy for how homeopathy addresses chronic conditions in humans.
This was a 120-year-old tree that had been in decline for some time before I came along and heard its cries for help. We can compare that to an adult who has experienced a chronic condition — say, allergies — for many years. The sufferer may say, “I started using homeopathy six weeks ago; why have my allergies not been eliminated quickly?”
While well-chosen homeopathic remedies employed as an SOS for an acute condition may surprise us with how quickly they can act, it takes time to see a shift in a chronic condition. Chronic conditions don’t appear in a day and likely won’t resolve in a day. (source)
