Just as women need and produce testosterone, men need and make smaller amounts of progesterone (and estrogen, by the way). Both genders require these vital hormones but in different quantities—this is just part of what differentiates the sexes.
[My friend Julie Formby is a wise healthcare provider. I share her information below, with permission, for those looking for lower-cost medical help in a non-traditional way.]
Little Known Facts About Progesterone:
• Calming – stabilizes the mood (in women, think PMS), reduces stress & anxiety
• Aids in sleep
• Helps regulate body temperature (esp. lessens hot flashes and night sweats)
• (If you convert more progesterone to Beta-Pregnenediol than to Alpha-Pregnenediol (progesterone metabolites), you are more likely to have issues with the things listed above).
• Promotes bone growth and density
• Reduces risk of blood clots
• Reduces ADHD and improves mental focus.
• Can reduce depression (including bipolar) and OCD, which may be tied to ADHD
• Reduces anger issues
• Reduces swelling as a result of traumatic brain injury
• May help with IBS & constipation – adrenaline shuts down digestion and elimination. Progesterone reduces adrenaline.
• May reduce fibroids in most cases (fibroid size can impact results), PCOS, endometriosis, asthma, gallbladder issues.
• Reduces heavy bleeding and spotting in menstruation
• Helps use fat for energy (compared to estrogens, which store fat)
• Protects the thyroid from nodule formation due to excess estrogens
• Increases thyroid function (if excess cortisol is an issue)
• May reduce: muscle pain and tension, even headaches, migraines, TMJ, neuropathy, fibromyalgia, muscle cramps & restless leg syndrome
• May reduce addictions
• Promotes fertility by encouraging implantation and maintaining pregnancy
• Stimulates the production of collagen increasing youthfulness of skin and reduces wrinkles
• Reduces preeclampsia, toxemia and gestational diabetes in pregnancy
• Helps with urinary urgency (including waking to urinate) and bedwetting (often tied to ADHD)
• Reduces adrenaline dominance
• Stress can steal from sex hormones, like progesterone, to make cortisol:
1. Cortisol can block progesterone receptors in the body.
2. Women’s bodies are more sensitive to stress and trauma, leading to more hormonal issues.
Health Tips In Regards To Progesterone
• B Vitamins, esp with B6, and Vitamin C are important for progesterone production.
• Vitex (aka chasteberry) is an excellent herbal support for progesterone production BEFORE menopause.
• AFTER menopause, Organic MoonMaid Botanicals Wild Yam Cream with NO artificial hormones and other chemicals. It may take 2 months to balance things, but I can attest, it’s great for hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.
Ingredients: Wild Yam Root*, Vitex Berries*, Comfrey Leaf*, Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil*, Distilled Water, Beeswax*, Sacha Inchi Oil*, BiAloe®*, MSM, and a blend of organic essential oils and flower essences. *Certified Organic
Wild yam cream post-menopause helps protect the breasts and endometrium in women by balancing estrogens (which promote cell proliferation, i.e. tumors). For helpful insight on wild yam, read this.
• Vitamin E is critical for progesterone production. (2 ounces sunflower seeds or almonds, 3 oz. hazelnuts = 100% RDA). Other sources: avocado, red peppers, collard greens, pumpkin, asparagus, butternut squash, broccoli, and mango.
— Vitamin E also reduces mast cell degranulation in Mast Cell Activation syndrome (MCAS).
— Vitamin E & progesterone also help with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia syndrome (POTS) & Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS).

Seed Cycling:
Seed Cycling can be used to increase progesterone production and reduce stronger estrogens from binding to estrogen receptor sites in your body:
• 1 Tbsp. ground flax seeds + 1 Tbsp. ground pumpkin seeds during Weeks 1-2 of monthly cycle
• 1 Tbsp. ground sesame seeds + 1 Tbsp. ground sunflower seeds during Weeks 3-4 of monthly cycle
• NOTE: I grind 2 weeks worth and store in a jar in the refrigerator, then sprinkle ground seeds on my food each day.

***What about after a hysterectomy? You still have progesterone, but not is the same amounts. The body will find balance if it gets the right nutrients. The adrenal glands take over hormone production so reducing what puts the body into stress is important to optimize the production of progesterone. Think of stress from worry, poor nutrition, too much coffee, medication, pain, rushing and always busy, not enough nature and too much electronics, etc.
Tips For Maximum Hormone Balancing & Adrenal Support:
1. Almost all hormone imbalances have a food sensitivity component to them (inflammation). I can help you test and interpret your results for food sensitivities.
2. Avoid alcohol – it is nearly impossible to regulate hormone imbalances when alcohol is being used in any quantity, especially in women during perimenopause/ menopause. The liver is key to balancing hormones!
3. Balance and stabilize blood sugar for maximum progesterone production – another reason why alcohol interferes with progesterone production. I can show you how.
4. Reduce excess weight, especially belly fat, which produces excess estrogens and throws off the balance with progesterone.
5. Support the adrenals: protein, healthy fats (incl MCT), adequate hydration, activate parasympathetic nervous system, and use Adrenal Cocktails: very effective for Sodium and Potassium which are depleted during stress (histamine overload will cause stress too). Start with:
• Potassium – use one or a combination of the following, keeping ratio at 3-4:1 for Potassium:Sodium and not exceeding 4700 mg/ day of Potassium. Start low (400-500 mg/ day) and slowly increase once a week by 100-125 mg/ day:
— 400 mg/ cup of coconut water
— 1 tsp. cream of tartar = 495 mg potassium
— 1/8 tsp. NOW Potassium Chloride = 363 mg potassium
• Sodium – start at 1/4 tsp/ day of Sea Salt and slowly increase once a week by 1/8 to 1/4 tsp/day:
— 1 tsp. sea salt =2200 mg sodium (RDA = 2300 mg)
*** If you are swelling, increase Potassium vs decreasing Sodium.
• Recipe idea: 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar or 4 oz coconut water + 1/4 tsp. Sea Salt + 4 oz. citrus juice (lemon, lime, orange) + collagen powder (optional – protein will slow down release of glucose from juices).
• Drink one cocktail per day, or add to your daily allotment of fluids (Drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of clear fluids daily).
It’s a complex dance, but hormone imbalances, MCAS, POTS, EDS and the other issues mentioned in this newsletter can all be managed naturally— ask me how (see Julie’s contact info below).
(One of my medical heroes Dr. John Lee, MD, explains why we should NOT use the synthetic progestin Provera as prescribed by most doctors. If you have any doubts about how different progesterone is from the progestins, remember that the placenta produces 300-400 mg of progesterone daily during the last few months of pregnancy, so we know that such levels are safe for the developing baby. But progestins, even at a fraction of this dose, can cause birth defects. Other side effects include partial loss of vision, breast cancer in test dogs, an increased risk of strokes, fluid retention, migraine headaches, asthma, heart irregularities and depression.)
