For millennia, people have been fascinated by and used milk thistle (Silybum marianum), a hardy flowering plant with unusual purple petaled flowers and spiky foliage. This botanical herb has attracted a lot of interest from researchers, medical professionals, and fans due to its extensive 2,000 year history of traditional and now modern applications.

The main and best-known component of milk thistle extract is silymarin present in the plant’s seeds, roots and leaves.

Dr. Makis recommends milk thistle extract in his cancer protocols. See one successful stage-4 protocol at the end.

Milk Thistle supports the Liver, keeping the body from Toxicity and Disease

Silymarin is not just another liver-protective antioxidant: it’s also a multifunctional compound for use in the treatment and prevention of different types of pathologies and disorders such as:

    • cancer

    • diabetes and diabetic nephropathy

    • hepatitis (incl. hepatitis C and hepatitis B virus)

    • non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

    • alcoholic liver disease

    • metabolic syndrome

    • depression

    • cardiovascular diseases

    • acetaminophen (Tylenol) induced liver damage

    • thalassemia (an inherited blood disorder that manifests as the production of reduced or zero quantities of hemoglobin)

Additionally, it has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-hypertensive properties.

Silymarin’s liver protective benefits are, in part, due to its capacity to scavenge free radicals and boost cellular glutathione (detoxification) levels (1).

In addition, silymarin has steroid-like effects. It stands out for having a large impact on the levels of inflammatory cytokines like IL-2, IL-4, IFN-, and TNF-.

In situations of chronic liver illness, silymarin taken orally has been shown to be useful in reducing hepatic inflammation.

For cancer patients: Silymarin protects normal cells against deleterious effects of chemotherapeutic agents. Silymarin plays a double role, namely, limiting the progression of cancer cells, forcing them to evolve towards a process of cell death—thus making it possible to target a greater number of tumor cells with an anticancer agent. (source)

Silymarin has also shown promise in treating a range of renal problems and illnesses.

Silymarin protects against Kidney Toxicity during Chemotherapy

Cisplatin is a potent anticancer agent against solid tumors of the testes, ovaries, breasts, lungs, bladder, and more, but use of cisplatin is limited by its marked toxicity to the kidney.

Silymarin has shown the ability to counteract renal toxicity brought on by chemotherapy drugs like cisplatin and ifosfamide without sacrificing the effectiveness of these medicines in treating tumors. [2, 3, 4] If milk thistle can lessen the damage from horribly toxic cisplatin, it can likely mitigate less toxic chemo drugs. Ask your doctor.

Silymarin protects the Brain & is Protective against Parkinson’s

Silymarin is being researched for its potential in treating a number of neurological diseases.

Silymarin was discovered to dramatically lessen protein oxidation in the cortex and hippocampus of aged rats when supplied at a level of 200 mg/kg/day. Given its antioxidant characteristics in the central nervous system and its capacity to cross the blood-brain barrier, this increases the possibility that silymarin plays a protective role in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s. (source)

In Dr. Marjama-Lyons’ book, What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About Parkinson’s Disease, on page 219, she states, “Milk Thistle is an effective liver tonic that helps protect the liver from toxins and that can detoxify and rejuvenate a liver that is damaged by toxic exposure.

In his book, The Brain Wellness Plan, neurologist Dr. Jay Lombard advises Parkinson’s disease patients who are taking any anti-Parkinson’s drugs to take 300 milligrams of standardized milk thistle daily.

One successful stage-4 Fenbendazole cancer protocol with shrinking tumors and dropping cancer markers included Milk Thistle (Silymarin) (source– from Dr. Wm. Makis, MD):

“My Cancer Story! I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in August 2023, and without treatment, I had 3-6 months to sort out my affairs. (source of text)

“I began my fenbendazole Protocol immediately.

“I nearly quit up since my quality of life had deteriorated dramatically. But I started to feel better. Less nausea. I had gained some weight back! Increased energy. My scan in November 2023 indicated that this severe cancer had neither grown or spread. My cancer marker dropped from over 100,000 to 35,000. As of January 2024, my new marker number was 18k!!! My oncologist was just scratching his head, and a family member said he seemed bewildered! And no, I did not inform him about the fenben.”

“I was terrified he’d drop me as a patient. I was quite appreciative for fenben and how it has helped me. I was feeling better and stronger. I had scans and bloodwork done in March, and my markers are now down to 6000. And the tumors were shrinking!!! Two weeks after my previous scan. I scanned again, and it returned NED.”

    THIS WAS MY PROTOCOL

    Hi! I’m Jacqueline!

Thanks for being part of this journey with me.
Welcome to my own little place on the internet! Home is where I love to be. I feel there is no greater place to incubate souls. These days you’ll find me using my experiences here to write about herbal remedies and natural health research — a big passion of mine. But being a wife and mother is not easy. It is challenging and potentially lonely. I get that. I wanted to create a place to connect with and support other moms for creating a natural, healthy, and fulfilling home life.
