I’ve been told, “But Jacque, you always wore a mask when you were in the operating room! You of all people should be encouraging people to wear masks!”

At 68, you’d think I’d want to wear a mask to protect myself from Covid-19. Instead, I’m very discouraged to see so many “educated” medical professionals forgetting their foundational knowledge and promoting unsubstantiated practices.

Let’s look at a few key facts.

    1. In the surgical suite, we wear masks for 2 main reasons, neither of which have anything to do with preventing the spread of viruses.

Standard medical masks are great for:

    • keeping the team’s spit out of the patient’s wound or incision
    • preventing bits of tissue and splatter from popping into our mouths

One needs an electron microscope to see a COVID 19 virus particle. Average COVID 19 virus particle size… is 0.125 microns… The hoarded N 95 mask only filters down to 0.3 microns. So, N95 masks block few, if any, virus particles. This is a simple fact, so you just cannot argue against it. ~Doc Graham, MD

Both cotton and surgical masks are ineffective in preventing coughs of patients with COVID-19.

    twitter comment

    (Source)

And if an N95 mask doesn’t fit properly, it will NOT work!

For standard hospital use, we are annually fit tested for an N95.

    twitter

    (Source)

Dr. Leora goes on to explain 7 more things needed to pass the fit test — so it’s obvious an N95 mask certainly doesn’t help laymen!

    2. For the layman, using masks without the proper training INCREASES exposure.

Most people have no idea that most masks provide little, if any, protection against viruses.

Wearing a mask gives a false sense of security.

And they’re essentially humid little germ incubators.

    Your mask is really just:

    • recirculating your own germs
    • lowering your oxygen level
    • certainly negatively impacting your immune system (see 5 more ways below)

A representative from the CDC told Reuters: “The CO2 will build up in the mask over time…the level of CO2 likely to build up in the mask is mostly tolerable to people exposed to it. You might get a headache but you most likely [would] not suffer the symptoms observed at much higher levels of CO2. The mask can become uncomfortable for a variety of reasons including a sensitivity to CO2 and the person will be motivated to remove the mask…”(see the rest here)

So go ahead with your cloth mask and create more laundry for yourself, but understand, you will be doing LITTLE to stop the spread of pathogens (and you may be making it WORSE when you handle it improperly).

“The take-home message is that the virus can remain infectious for several hours, potentially up to a few days, on various surfaces, including masks,” says Amandine Gamble, infectious disease expert

Skip to 2:45: (this may blow up your mask fixation and help you see enforcement is a petty power grab!)

6 ways to flatten a healthy immune system or worsen a stressed one:

    Sara Jo Poff:

    1. Being stressed or anxious raises cortisol (aka the “death hormone”) which weakens our immune system.

    2. Wearing a mask frequently, especially while being active, has certain impact. The body requires AMPLE amounts of oxygen for optimal immune health. Proper oxygenation of cells and blood is ESSENTIAL for the body to function as it needs to in order to fight off any illness.

    3. Consuming refined sugars. It’s been known for decades that refined sugars shut down white blood cell production for up to five hours after consumption.

    4. Staying inside rather than being outside to take in air, sunshine (Vitamin D), and soil bacteria.

    5. Avoiding physical contact with others. Physical touch has been shown to boost the immune system. Research shows women who receive more hugs from their partners have lower heart rates and blood pressure. Hugs strengthen the immune system…The gentle pressure on the sternum and the emotional charge this creates stimulates the thymus gland, which regulates and balances the body’s production of white blood cells.

    6. Using harsh antibacterial sanitizers, soaps, cleaners, etc. The microbiome of our skin requires beneficial microbes as well as some levels of pathogenic and physiologic microbes (bacteria and viruses) in order to keep the immune system continuously protected from very harmful bacteria and viruses.

Anybody awake yet?! Do you see how we are being pulled away from God’s natural design for our immune system?! Hmmm why would that be??!! (Source)

“The moisture from exhalation inside the mask, when in constant contact with the 37 degrees Celsius warm human body, becomes ideal place for virus and bacteria to thrive. This could result in the growth of microbes on masks and aid the spread of airborne diseases like influenza. It can lead to oxygen shortage, suffocation, respiration trouble, and heart attacks.“ ~Dr. D. Saha

“My constitutional freedoms do not end where another person’s fear begins.” ~Sara Jo Poff

How can we minimize the risks of mask wearing if we live in a state where they are mandatory?

What an interesting post! In the UK the government is heading down the mandatory mask route. What I am seeing with people who are wearing them is definitely a false sense of security. Less social distancing in the supermarket when wearing them for example as if they are ‘safe’. From the start I have been of the view that they give a false sense of security, not least because people fiddle with them and touch themselves and stuff around them, but still think they are safe and that they have done good… dangerous times. dangerous policy. This was yet more confirmation that it is about ‘being seen to do something’ rather than acting with facts. xx

Yes, Kate, It is my prayer that we will all get a good herd immunity going (while protecting the compromised) as with any other flu, etc. Masks are such a faulty means of prevention that we should all work to strengthen our immune systems and thereby have MUCH IMPROVED resistance to anything that comes down the pike!

I’m a bit confused how can the mask cause a build of CO2 while also not blocking viral particles, CO2 molecules are much smaller than viral particles so I don’t understand how you can have both.

Vicky, our bodies are designed to be able to rapidly get fresh, oxygenated airflow as needed, even while sitting and calculating or doing lots of difficult mental work. Shallow breathing is even harmful for very long – that is why pulmonologists want us to breath deeply all the time for optimum oxygenation. Yes, some will dissipate, but not enough. Also, as your mask gets damp, it impedes flow of O2. Good question, but the lowered outcomes are very real! There have been fatalities in cars when the driver wore a mask. Slow lowering of cellular O2.

Hi! feel like I’ve been trying to repeat these things over and over but it’s useless. I, too, was an OR scrub tech, then FA then OR RN for most of my life. We go through extensive mask training yearly on many different kinds! When I moved on to work the floors, masks are confusing enough for even healthcare workers that there are tools to use to help discern when to use which mask or isolation procedure.

Anything else I want to say is just going to be enthustiacally repeating the things you shared. Great article!

How does wearing a mask pull us away from Gods natural design for our immune system? If we are to treat our body as though it is the temple of the Holy Spirit, then we should want to try everything to protect it. It seems that even your post makes a point that wearing and using a mask correctly is better than not wearing one. Wouldn’t it be more helpful to spread that message without insinuating there is an alternative motive (i.e. pulling us away from the natural design of our immune system) behind the suggestion or even requirement to use a mask in public?

This blog post is misleading. There is an extensive amount of high-quality, peer-reviewed research that demonstrates that wearing masks is effective at spreading viruses. I’m a nurse and I work in ORs. Yes, OR staff wear masks to prevent their spit and respiratory droplets from landing on incision sites. But why? Because spit is full of viruses and bacteria that could infect the site. There is little to no scientific evidence that masks lower oxygen levels, unless someone has comprised lung function because of a serious illness like chronic lung disease or cystic fibrosis. But people with these diseases actually wear masks more than the average person does in order to help protected themselves from viruses and illnesses that they are particularly vulnerable to. Yes, many people don’t wear masks correctly and this can increase their risk of getting sick despite the fact that they are trying to wear masks. What is the solution to this? Educate people on how to properly wear mask, not discourage them from wearing them.

Dear ‘a nurse who believe in science’,
I hope I can make my case for the corruption of peer reviewed studies with this post: https://deeprootsathome.com/serious-misconduct-retraction-of-major-lancet-hydroxychloroquine-study/
There is not much high quality peer-reviewed research that we can beleive to day with the agenda to foist a covid vaccine on us, which leads me to this post where Fauci, Hotez and Gates admit we can’t make one, BUT they aRE!! https://deeprootsathome.com/doctors-warn-immune-reaction/
I hope you will look more deeply than what you are being told! Many in our profession see this…why don’t you do some research and rethink it, please..for you sake and for your family.

Thank you for writing and posting this article. I have been trying to spread the same message to everyone I know. I too am a retired Registered Nurse who specialized in Occupational Health. I performed mask tests for respirators frequently during my career; and N-95’s are a respirator per OSHA. I just wish OSHA would come out and say something about this complete misuse of personal protective equipment, and that is not even effective for preventing the spread of the virus. It is amazing to me that people do not recognize that in Wuhan China they have been wearing masks for years because of the air pollution, and it did not prevent them from getting COVID-19. The misinformation out there is so harmful.

Thank you for this post! Even before reading this, I wasn’t too convinced that wearing a mask was all that helpful. Just thinking about wearing a mask causes the anxiety to skyrocket within me. (Due to childhood medical experiences I have PTSD when it comes to medical things.) I’ve been quite suspicious of the “studies” that say wearing masks are safe and that they protect.

Several years ago, I tried wearing a mask (suppose to protect from allergens) to dust. All I was successful in doing was getting HOT very fast and feeling half-sick. I’ll tolerate the allergens!

I’m confused, your post suggests there is absolutely no benefit to cloth masks. In fact, you state “…you will be doing LITTLE to stop the spread of pathogens (and you may be making it WORSE when you handle it improperly).” One of the scientific studies you cite, states “It is also unknown whether the rates of infection observed in the cloth mask arm are the same or higher than in HCWs who do not wear a mask, as almost all participants in the control arm used a mask.” The study you are citing only found that Medical masks are more efficient than cloth masks (which I’m sure we can all agree makes sense). There is no 100% way to eliminate risk, however by all of us being responsible and doing our part we can reduce our risk of contracting COVID-19. Lastly, people rely on you (as a nurse) to provide complete and accurate information. I highly doubt any reputable medical publication would use a FOX news clip as a valid source of information.

If you don’t like that, then consider that masks increase 02 concentration and this environment in the body ramps up cancer cell growth. Lots of studies here that connect the dots for you:

I prefer using scientific journals when making statements about important issues, such as health- especially if people were looking to me for advice. There is no bias. I wouldn’t listen to an MSNBC news clip (or related “left-leaning” news channel). As a medical professional, I’m sure you’d agree that these are complex issues that cannot simply be solved in a 2 minute clip. I am curious, did you read the journal articles you cited? They actually refute your arguments.
As I mentioned, as a nurse people look to you for advice. Please be sure take this responsibility seriously. With regards to free speech, the 1st amendment does not apply when it is injurious to others. One could say that providing incomplete/misleading information could be injurious when others believe/follow that information.
It’s obvious we disagree on this topic, however I commend you for having the courtesy/courage to post alternative viewpoints.
