The short video that follows is devastating, but it needs to be aired because it lends insight to something I believe we have been overlooking. There is a serious problem of over-diagnosing ADHD in children these days, thus leading to over-medicating. These drugs have many (I repeat: many) terrible side-effects most people are not aware of. Perhaps watching will spare your family similar pain. Please read to the end where I list safe, yet effective alternatives.
[Please know this is NOT a judgement of you if you or someone in your family is on one of the ADHD or anti-anxiety meds. It is also NOT a condemnation of all medicines, either, but rather it is a warning to stay aware of drug facts and dangerous side-effects].
The mother of a 12-year-old girl who fatally stabbed her 9-year-old brother is speaking out. April Lyda believes the incident was the result of a manic episode (a known, fairly common side-effect) while going on and off an ADHD medication.
5 minutes.
April Lyda said her daughter, who had been on and off medication for years, spoke about her desire to stab her younger brother two weeks before the incident. “But I had no idea she was having those thoughts. [T]hey.. never had behavioral issues until she was put back on a medication she was off for over a year.” (source)
Violent behavior while on these meds is not unusual and actually quite common, but who would want to broadcast their situation and draw attention to themselves. Here are 3 comments following the video which show this is not rare:
“I can confirm the issues her daughter had. I was on ADHD medication (Adderall) in college, and as my doctor increased the dose, it made me extremely angry all the time, typically for no reason. I screamed at friends, I screamed at family, I even got into major arguments with my professors which led to me getting suspended. Then when I discovered it was the high dose that led to that behavior I immediately cut the dose in half, and those issues stopped. I feel for this family tremendously.”
“My son who is the sweetest, non violent child you could ever meet and his medicine was changed and he literally almost stabbed my ex mother in law but thankfully his dad stepped in quick enough to stop it! He couldn’t explain why or what happened. The doctor immediately stopped that med and he has never ever acted like that since and he just graduated highschool.”
“About 2 or 3 months after stopping my ADHD med, I locked myself in a closet bc I was afraid I was gonna kill my dog. It was everything I could do to not kill her, and I didn’t understand why. I had some very small morsel of something that told me something was happening and these weren’t “real” feelings. That morsel saved my dog and me. Scariest thing I’ve ever experienced.”
COMMON Side-Effects of Different Classes of Anxiety, ADHD Meds
Psychiatric drugs are prescribed to tens of millions of individuals, 8 million of whom are children, suffering from ADHD, anxiety and depression. What follows are the most common side-effects for each group of medications:
The side-effects include:
- Sleep problems
- Decreased appetite
- Increased B/P
- Dizziness
- Headaches and stomachaches
- Rebound (irritability when the medication wears off)
- Moodiness and extreme irritability
- Nervousness, anxiety
- Tics
- Personality changes
Some antidepressant drugs (Wellbutrin, Tofranil, etc.) are used off-label to treat ADHD symptoms. The FDA has warned: Antidepressants increase the risk of suicide, violence and homicide at all ages.
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin, Restoril, etc.). The side-effects include:
- Hypotension (lowers blood pressure)
- Decreased sex drive/libido
- Nausea and constipation
- Lack of coordination
- Significant Dis-inhibition (loss of impulse control)
- Depression
- Unusual emotional dysfunction, including anger and violence
- Memory loss
- Difficulty thinking
- Decreased IQ (studies show risk of early dementia)
Antidepressants (SSRIs: Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, Paxil, Luvox, Viibyrd, or SNRIs: Effexor, Anafranil, etc.):
- Sexual dysfunction
- Headache
- Dizziness/drowsiness
- Diarrhea
- Weight loss/gain
Both types of drugs above may also cause what’s known as “paradoxical effects” where in some cases the person may experience a worsening of symptoms rather than an improvement. In some, this may be more anxiety. In others, this can even be severe suicidal or homicidal ideation and possibly even action. This is still a serious concern, so why risk it?
Antidepressants can also cause REM Sleep Behavior Disorder, Nightmares & Death.
DANGEROUS Side Effects of Anxiety Drugs
Beyond the paradoxical effect of suicidal ideation and increased anxiety, in less common cases, some people have experienced:
- Heart problems, especially in those with possible cardiovascular disease
- Persistent pulmonary hypertension (possibly fatal lung disease)
- Increased bleeding risk
- Interactions with other medications
Some can cause ‘dependency’, which is when the body adapts to the drug and the medication generally stops working, which means that you will need to find a replacement medication. Often it is better to not get started into this at all.
Second, withdrawal can be extremely dangerous, often needing to be slowly weaned off of over time. These withdrawal symptoms are a bit like withdrawing from severe alcoholism, and may lead to increased anxiety, depression, psychosis, seizures, hypersensitivity, and possibly murder or suicide. Gastrointestinal problems and insomnia are also very common. (source)
When you combine all the risks, anxiety medications should be used only after much prayer, research even beyond this article, and in-depth discussions with your doctor who will (hopefully) monitor you and any symptoms. If you do decide to commence medication, do so with the knowledge that medication is only a tool for recovery as opposed to the answer. For many, it is the opening of Pandora’s box.
The rate of ADHD diagnosis is frightening as is the pumping of pills into children. Rather than taking the time to understand what’s truly going on, people have been trained to seek out the quick fix which leads nowhere and often ends badly for all involved, except for the pharmaceutical companies.
Readers, please feel free to share your experience in the comments to give insight to others.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” ~James 1:5
