Mercola On Methylene Blue: For Memory, Mood, Parkinson’s & More

Mercola On Methylene Blue: For Memory, Mood, Parkinson's, ADHD, More

Besides totally inactivating HIV-1, Hepatitis A and C, and the Ebola and Zika viruses, Methylene Blue (1%) is scientifically proven to be neuroprotective and help restore/reset brain function in people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, bipolar, depression and more.

Existing ‘approved’ drugs for dementia obviously don’t work or they would be curing people and the disease would disappear.

Methylene Blue (1%) is the parent molecule for hydroxychloroquine, the off-patent drug commonly used to treat not only malaria but also “The Great Flu”. Until antibiotics came along, it was commonly used to treat urinary tract infections (which still works, btw) at low doses mentioned below. It’s also used as an antiviral agent in blood transfusions.

To this day, Methylene Blue (MB) is found in every hospital worldwide for metabolic poisons that interferes with oxygen transport. If you’re admitted for carbon monoxide or cyanide poisoning, you’ll receive methylene blue intravenously. It’s the only known antidote.

Studies have demonstrated Methylene Blue (1%) is an extremely effective antidepressant. You likely don’t know about it because very this affordable substance would put the mental health industry out of business. And it doesn’t have the nasty side-effects of Paxil or other antidepressants.

In this video, Dr. Mercola and Dr. Francisco Gonzalez-Lima cover why Big Pharma doesn’t want us to know about Methylene Blue (1%) or how to use it. If you want to care for your family outside of the present medical paradigm, this would be something to pay attention to and have in your medicine toolkit.

[Gonzalez-Lima is the top expert on Methylene Blue which helps mitochondrial respiration and improves brain energy metabolism that can truly prevent neurodegeneration and improve cognitive performance. “Our group was the first to map the effects of methylene blue in the brain of humans and show its effects on improving brain metabolism, blood flow and memory function.”]

The first 10 minutes cover a lot, and very low dosage is discussed at 1:02:30.

Low doses of MB work well as a nootropic, but high doses DO NOT. See the low dose chart below.

Quick list of important neurological diseases Methylene Blue addresses:

    Methylene Blue for Bipolar Disorder:

MB in the Treatment of Neuropsychiatric Disorders. Conclusion: “Use of methylene blue in bipolar disorder led to a better stabilization and a reduction in residual symptoms of the illness.” Another study here. See MB May Help Bipolar Depression.

    Methylene Blue for Depression

A Controlled Trial of MB in Severe Depressive Illness. Conclusion: “Methylene blue at a dose of 15 mg/day appears to be a potent antidepressant..”

The Prophylactic Effect of MB in Manic-Depressive Psychosis. Conclusion: “During the year the patients were treated with methylene blue at 300 mg/day, they were significantly less depressed than during the year on 15 mg/day.”

The Journal of Neurotrauma reports that methylene blue has an antidepressant effect in mice with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

MB Resists Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s Diseases

MB and Alzheimer’s Disease. Conclusion: MB is known to reduce the formations of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles and to repair impairments in mitochondrial function and cellular metabolism.  It also shows promise in treating Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases... (source)

    MB Improves Memory:

Neurometabolic Mechanisms for Memory Enhancement and Neuroprotection of MB. Conclusion: “..Methylene Blue is neuroprotective… a safe intervention for the treatment of acute and chronic conditions with neurodegeneration and memory impairment.”

Functional MR Imaging of the Effects of MB in the Human Brain. Conclusion: “A single oral dose of MB improved memory retrieval by 7% and increased MRI-based responses in areas of the brain that control short-term memory and attention.”

More supporting studies here, here, here, and here.

MB Boosts Acetylcholine Important for Neuroplasticity

MB inhibits problematic acetylcholinesterase activity; the outcome is increased levels of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine’s function in the brain is critical for encoding new memories, reasoning, concentration, cognition, and growth of new synapses (neuroplasticity). Lack of acetylcholine can result in diseases like ADD, ADHD and Alzheimer’s. MB improves serotonin and norepinephrine affecting anxiety, depression and memory.

    MB Increases Mitochondrial Energy:

Methylene Blue assists brain cell respiration by increasing oxygen. And donating electrons to the electron transport chain within mitochondria. This same process is used to create ATP within mitochondria from the food you eat. So MB contributes to this energy-production process. Increasing cellular energy positively effects mood and memory.

    MB is Neuroprotective:

Methylene Blue (1%)  is a potent antioxidant. When damaging reactive oxygen species are produced inside mitochondria, the first free radical that is formed inside a cell is superoxide. MB will bind to superoxide and reduce it to water. It stops the oxidative cascade at its very beginning, before it gets a chance to do damage.

    How to Take Methylene Blue

Mercola On Methylene Blue: For Memory, Mood, Parkinson's, ADHD, More
    Methylene Blue

Very low dose Methylene Blue (1%) supplementation (0.5 mg to 1 mg/kg of bodyweight/day) provides many life-enhancing effects, while very high doses are harmful.

    With MB, less is more.

Make sure to get it from a trusted source. The 1% product is 0.5 mg./drop and batch tested for purity.

REMEMBER: Very low dose Methylene Blue (1%) supplementation (which is 0.5 mg/kg of body weight/day) provides many life-enhancing effects, while very high doses (2 mg/kg. and above) are harmful. To get good effects, you can take a fraction of these recommended low levels and still get good effects. I always recommend talking with your functional doctor.

This dosing chart is only for reference of what is in the safe range. However, most will find the following amounts are not needed to get the wonderful effects.

DOSING FOR METHYLENE BLUE 1% SOLUTION

    Body Weight: 50 kg/110 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 25 mg/day or 50 drops/day

    Body Weight: 55 kg/121 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 27.5 mg/day or 55 dr/day

    Body Weight: 60 kg/132 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 30 mg/day or 60 drops/day

    Body Weight: 65 kg/143 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 32.5 mg/day or 65 dr/day

    Body Weight: 70 kg/154 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 35 mg/day or 70 drops/day

    Body Weight: 75 kg/165 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 37.5 mg/day or 75 dr/day

    Body Weight: 80 kg/176 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 40 mg/day or 80 drops

    Body Weight: 85 kg/187 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 42.5 mg/day or 85 dr/day

    Body Weight: 90 kg/198 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 45 mg/day or 90 drops/day

    Body Weight: 95 kg/209 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 47.5 mg/day or 95 dr/day

    Body Weight: 100 kg/220 lbs:  0.5 mg/kg dose = 50 mg/day or 100 drops/day

How To Make It NOT SO BLUE

(Jacque’s note: I personally consume 10 drops of this Methylene Blue (1%) into 1-2″ of lemon water (and add 1-2 gms. of buffered sodium ascorbate powder, too) both AM and PM, and wait a few minutes till the blue color lessens dramatically. That VERY LOW DOSE is a total of 20 drops/day or 10 mg/day. Very low doses like this are discussed at 1:02:30 in the video above. I use a straw, swish with pure water afterward and have not had stained teeth. Urine will be blue-green-tinged, and observing that is helpful to tell you when your levels are low again. The half-life is 12-13 hours.)

    Contraindications:

Do not use Methylene Blue if you have a G6PD deficiency, a liver or kidney disorder, if you regularly use 5-HTP or St. John’s Wort, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Side effects with MB are very rare when doses are under 2 mg/kg.

Monoamine Oxidase (MAOI) inhibition becomes a big problem over 2 mg/kg of MB. So if you are using antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications that affect dopamine or serotonin, you should NOT use Methylene Blue over 2 mg./kg.

NO MB during pregnancy or while nursing.

Note: In the video above, at 1:33:30, Mayo Clinic said there is “NO contraindication for oral MB with SSRIs”.

Follow directions closely or find and consult a functional doctor before use.
