Why Zeolite Is So Good For Cleaning Up the Entire Body

As exposure to environmental toxins continues to rise, it’s more important than ever to find safe and effective ways to aid the body’s natural detox systems. With its distinctive structure and long-standing history of use, zeolite stands out as very useful. Because of that, this is perhaps the most important medical article I’ve ever compiled, so please take a few minutes and read to the end.

Zeolite was first discovered in 1756 by Swedish mineralogist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, who noted its unique property of releasing water vapor when heated, leading to its name meaning “boiling stone.” Zeolites are being used in numerous important medical applications, widespread water treatment and as a filtration medium, and were even utilized by NASA to grow plants in space. 

I want to dedicate the rest of this post to the science supporting the rather amazing things Zeolite Clinoptilolite (ZC) can do to enhance life. Then I’ll share ~30 anecdotal stories at the end for more insight.

Use Of Zeolite Clinoptilolite In Past Nuclear Disasters

The first major documented use of zeolite clinoptilolite occurred in 1986 to clean up the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine. The consequences were comparable to the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Zeolite clinoptilolite showed it prowess as a therapeutic agent for radiation-sick people, soil, water and animals (source).

Those real-world applications strongly suggest that zeolite clinoptilolite offers a valuable defense in an increasingly polluted world. A substance like zeolite that is listed generally regarded as safe (GRAS), now plays an important role in preventive and corrective health.

What the Studies Say About Zeolite Clinoptilolite (ZC) Safety

With over 40 natural zeolite types, clinoptilolite stands out as the most commonly utilized in supplements, thanks to its well-documented safety and effectiveness.

A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis consisting of 136 individual studies published in Frontiers in Pharmacology evaluated the safety of clinoptilolite and found it to be well-tolerated in both animal and human trials, with no systemic toxicity observed (Pavelić et al). (A meta-analysis is a method widely regarded as the gold standard in evidence-based medicine.)

The PubMed meta-analysis is summarized in Table 1:

I’ve pulled out 25 studies from the meta-analysis above which illustrate clinically relevant data for the health conscious person desiring the best health possible:

1. People often ask if the alumino portion of the clinoptilolite molecule can break free in the body and actually cause toxicity. The answer is NO. “The clinoptilolite structure is still not destroyed after 12 hours of heating at 750°C (Ghiara et al., 1999). This structural stability is an essential element for in vivo applications.” “Zeolites with higher silica content, such as clinoptilolite, are stable in acids (Payra and Dutta, 2003).”

And “aluminum from the clinoptilolite materials does not enter the blood or accumulate in the body as shown in athletes supplemented with zeolite-clinoptilolite supplements (Lamprecht et al., 2015).

2. “Clinoptilolite has been recognized in medical applications..[for] efficiency in the removal of numerous harmful substances including radioactive elements, mycotoxins, and poisons” (Laurino and Palmieri, 2015).

3. People are often concerned that vitamin and amino-acid building blocks will be removed by zeolite clinoptilolite, but NO, they are not (if you read these 2 sentences to the end): “Clinoptilolite is effective in fighting mycotoxins (molds) by direct absorption. Affinity toward aflatoxins, ochratoxin, and the T2 toxin was proven in vitro in the presence of amino-acids and vitamins, where the latter were NOT absorbed by the clinoptilolite material (Tomasevic-Canovic et al., 1996).”

4. Minerals were NOT stolen; mineral homeostasis was RESTORED: “A total of 102 heavy-metal contaminated men were investigated and decreased concentrations of harmful metals were measured in their hair after a 30-day supplementation with clinoptilolite. This decrease in harmful heavy metal concentrations was a result of the clinoptilolite detoxification and restoration of the body mineral metabolism homeostasis (see 5th paragraph here under the section “Clinoptilolite Toxicology in Animals and Humans.” Zhakov, 2003 is cited).

5. Again, NO minerals or vitamins are stolen: “Importantly, while great danger exists in removing the physiologically important electrolytes from the serum in a classical detoxification process, this has NOT been observed in clinoptilolite trials both in humans and animals, where no substantial changes in physiologically relevant trace elements or vitamins were observed even after long-term administration (Papaioannou et al., 2002; Katsoulos et al., 2005b; Flowers et al., 2009).

6. Significant increase in specific immunity cell counts of B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes and T-helper cells CD4+ was observed in subjects treated with clinoptilolite (Ivkovic et al. (2004).

7. Antiviral properties for clinoptilolite in vitro were shown on the human adenovirus 5, herpes simplex virus type 1, and the human enteroviruses coxsackievirus B5 and echovirus 7 (Grce and Pavelić, 2005). This effect is attributed to a direct adhesion [binding] of the viral particles onto clinoptilolite, “which then inhibits viral entrance in the cells and viral replication.”

8. “A neuroprotective effect was documented by Basha et al. (2013).” Safety of the material was also proven by Ivkovic et al. (2004) where “no adverse reactions to clinoptilolite supplementation were observed in immunodeficient patients.”

9. Clinoptilolite provides “direct detoxifying performance in vivo. For instance, in lead-intoxicated mice, clinoptilolite decreased the lead accumulation in the intestine by more than 70% (Beltcheva et al., 2012).

10. In broiler chickens, “supplementation of clinoptilolite materials increased the activity of glutathione peroxidase, total SOD, and the total antioxidant capacity (Wu Y. et al., 2013). (Ortatatli and Oğuz, 2001) demonstrated the reduction of mycotoxin effects on broilers’ health, [and] the number of severe lesions in the liver of the chickens was reduced.

11. (Cutovic et al., 2017) showed “a positive effect of clinoptilolite supplementation on lowering the total lipid count and LDL, which may also be correlated with its general antioxidative effect”.

12a. Gut related: Excessive production of ammonia occurs in irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and colorectal carcinogenesis (Hughes and Magee, 2000; Yao et al., 2016). Clinoptilolite has a high binding affinity toward ammonia and useful in these cases (see ‘Results’ in Yao et al., 2016).

12b: This study measured a beneficial effect on intestinal parameters. “While the total count of E. coli was significantly reduced, and a rise of Lactobacillus acidophilus occurred in parallel”.

12c: And this study demonstrates clinoptilolite binds and neutralizes Clostridium difficile (C. diff) toxins A and B, and is a safe agent in the treatment and/or prevention of C. diff-associated diarrhea.

13. “An interesting effect of clinoptilolite was observed in fluoride-intoxicated rats (see 3rd paragraph here under the section “Clinoptilolite Toxicology in Animals and Humans.”(Madhusudhan et al., 2009). Fluoride is neurotoxic upon penetration through the blood–brain barrier during gestation and post-gestation periods. Upon supplementation of rat pups with clinoptilolite, oxidative damage from fluoride was substantially reduced in the cerebral cortex and medulla oblongata”. “In line with these results, it should also be hypothesized that clinoptilolite has the potential to combat acute fluoride-intoxication in humans, as well.” (Asare et al., 2025)

**Knowing that fluoride deposits in and calcifies the pineal gland, zeolite’s effect of binding and removing fluoride would likely decalcify the pineal gland. (I have anecdotal stories of this and experienced it myself early in my detox journey.)

14. ..zeolite increased SOD activity (an important antioxidant defense in all living cells) in mouse models with Alzheimer disease in the [brain] hippocampus and cortex, while it simultaneously reduced Aβ (x-42) amyloid beta levels in the hippocampus (Montinaro et al., 2013).

15a. “..clinoptilolite antitumor effects were attributed to the modulation of the EGF-R, protein kinase B (PKB)/Akt, and nuclear factor kB (NfkB) signaling”.  (Pavelić et al., 2001b; Katic et al., 2006).

15b. This study shows clinoptilolite treatment of dogs suffering from cancers “led to prolongation of life-span and decrease in tumors size”. It induces expression of p21 and p27 tumor suppressor genes “and blocks cell growth in several cancer cell lines”.

16. In this study of pregnant and lactating cows, “the control cows had a 21-fold higher odds of mammary infections than Zeolite Clinoptilolite fed cows. This beneficial outcome of the study may be attributed to the antibacterial, detoxifying, antioxidative and immunostimulating effects of ZC on the metabolism of cows.”

17. “Erythrocyte, hemoglobin, and platelet levels in blood were not affected by clinoptilolite supplementation.” Martin-Kleiner et al. (2001)

18. Clinoptilolite showed NO negative effects on female rat reproductive performance and it proved non-genotoxic (Elmore, 2003).

19. Clinoptilolite-treated dairy goats showed NO changes in serum concentrations of fat-soluble vitamins, macro-elements, and trace elements, or liver enzymes. Clinoptilolite supplementation improved milk fat percentage and milk hygiene (Katsoulos et al., 2009). NO effects of clinoptilolite on physiological mineral levels have been observed in cows (Katsoulos et al., 2005a; Valpotić et al., 2017).

20. (Pavelic, Katic, Sverko et al, 2002) administered Zeolite Clinoptilolite by gastric intubation to mice injected with melanoma cells and significantly reduced the number of melanoma metastases.

21. Zeolite Clinoptilolite dietary administration “alleviated the nitrate burden to the body and reduced the negative systemic effects” (Katsoulos et al., 2015).

22. Clinoptilolite “nano-zeolite is considered as nontoxic to the environment and safe for human consumption” (Ibrahim et al, 2019). Clinoptilolite is considered to be biologically neutral and non-toxic (Auerbach et al., 2003).

23a. “The efficacy of zeolite for PFAS [“forever chemicals”] removal has been proved.” (source) This study demonstrated “simultaneous pharmaceutical and personal care products and perfluorinated alkyl substance (PFAS) removal utilizing zeolite material.” “Human health risks associated with PFAS exposure include immune and thyroid disruptions, cancer, kidney, and liver diseases, hormonal dysfunction, hypertension, high cholesterol, reproductive issues, diseases like ulcerative colitis and even depression in adults.” (Science Direct source)

23b: This study This study agrees, showing Zeolite Clinoptilolite detoxes toxic metabolites produced by drugs chronically administered during chemo, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases.

24: This study discusses the numerous positive effects of Zeolite clinoptilolite’s detoxifying, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases (neuropathies, AD, and PD). 

25. This study finds rats and human patients treated with Zeolite Clinoptilolite showed an increase in bone mineral density, an elevated level of markers indicative of bone formation, a significant reduction in pain. 

26. This study exposes that “Kidney is the target of heavy metals and the proximal tubule has been recognized as the main site of accumulation and damage”. The text is highly technical, but it quickly becomes clear that healthy organ function depends on removing heavy metals from these sensitive organs (kidney and liver).
