In 2017, the FDA published a safety alert to raise awareness that the supplement biotin can “SIGNIFICANTLY interfere with certain lab tests and cause incorrect test results…” This alert also states that there has been “an increase in the number of reported adverse events” (injuries associated with medical care) related to biotin interference with lab tests.
With the growing trend of more biotin supplement users in the millions (for hair and nails), labs were alerted to the increased risk of test interference.
But most doctors don’t take the time to ask patients if they are taking a supplement with biotin before blood tests and most patients don’t know to tell providers.
The recommended daily intake of Biotin is set by the Department of Agriculture at 30 mcg (0.03 mg) per day. Still, doses all the way to to 10,000 mcg (10 mg) have been allowed since there are ‘apparently’ no adverse effects. No long term studies have been done.
No “Apparent” Biotin Side Effects, But …
Biotin, a water-soluble B vitamin, interferes with the following lab tests:
• Troponin (the test for heart attack). Biotin can cause a false negative troponin indicating the patient’s heart is normal, when in fact they’ve had a heart attack!
• T4, T3, and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
• Betahuman chorionic gonadotropin (beta–hCG) (it may well tell you you’re not pregnant)
• Cortisol
• Insulin
• Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
Example: In thyroid lab tests, biotin supplementation can make you look more hyperthyroid than you really are.
If this happens, then your doctor may lower your thyroid med in order to compensate – and you may end up feeling worse! The supplement does not impact thyroid function – it just interferes with the lab results.
You can solve the problem by avoiding biotin intake for 3 days to be safe before tests. (source)
And You Can Overdose and End Up with… Hair Loss?
1 minute.
In some cases, biotin may cause upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea and skin rashes. The best way to mitigate these side-effects is to take your supplements with food.
Extreme adverse reactions are rare. One person who took biotin in combination with vitamin B5 for two months developed eosinophilic pleuropericardial effusion, a life-threatening disease.
Can you imagine going in for blood tests and getting false lab results that lead to missed diagnoses with potentially serious consequences? Consider the harm to heart attack patients following a falsely low troponin assay. (source) Or diabetic patients with falsely low insulin levels.
I impulsively purchased this popular hair and nail product and was so disappointed to see that it had ingredients I don’t want in my body (titanium dioxide, mica, carmine color) and an atrocious amount of biotin. I ignored my own conviction to be a good label reader! I have since thrown these away!

Remember, biotin might be hidden in your multivitamin, dietary supplement, or prenatal vitamin formula.
I Found Something Better Than Biotin For My Hair and Nails
I stopped my own radical hair loss from advanced Lyme years ago with this nano-zeolite (I recommend this chelator for deep cellular whole-body cleansing).
And now instead of taking biotin for hair growth support, I use this amazing homeopathic hair growth combo, and my hair is far stronger and thicker than normal for someone 71 years-old. I’m thrilled. I’m also using these silica drops at 20/day and my hair is MUCH thicker.
The bottom line: Always tell your doctor if you’re taking biotin. And remember, you are getting sufficient amounts in these commonly eaten foods:
- Almonds
- Eggs
- Beef
- Mushrooms
- Salmon
- Sweet potatoes
- Sunflower seeds
[Btw, it’s my opinion that the FDA (and agencies like it) are doing a terrible job protecting consumers:
• The FDA turned a blind eye to falsely diagnosed ‘Covid’ when using a fraudulent PCR test they ran at 44 cycles. That fraud sent many people to the hospital that didn’t need to go there, and many wrongly got put on ventilators and ultimately died.
• They have restricted wonder compound DMSO for many 40+ years.
• They have also never taken incredibly harmful, chemo-like antibiotic Cipro or other black box drugs off the market. It only takes 1 incident to ruin your health or take a life.
I’m encouraging you and your precious family to be use extreme discernment and wisdom whenever you interact with the allopathic medical system or big pharma – medicines, doctor’s offices, hospitals, well-baby visits included.

Hello Jaqueline!
You know, I also recently impulse bought biotin gummies. My bottle does have a warning to tell your doctor because it can interfere with test results.
The homeopathic hair growth combo…I am unfamiliar with the site you linked too elixir dot com. Is it a legitimate site? You have personally bought directly from them?
I would love something that actually works!
Thanks for your help.

Hi, Amber. Yes, this is the product that I use personally: https://www.elixirs.com/products.cfm?productcode=hh96
It does say, ‘Because each hair is going through different growth cycles, in order to notice improvement, it is important to use the product regularly and not start and stop the product randomly. Hair is mainly protein, so improve your diet with more protein and nutritious food to nourish the hair.” I have found that now that I am consistently detoxing with the nano-zeolite I mentioned (and pretty far into it), supplements like this actually work and are no longer band-aids.
I hope that helps,
Jacque

So glad the FDA is warning folks of this, I’ve actually been really impressed with how the FDA and EPA operate the longer I work in proximity with them. It may look chaotic from the outside, but they are immensely thorough with new drugs on the market.
