I talk about turmeric a lot. I’ve also talked about raw honey as well (my husband is a beekeeper).
With the fusion of the two, you’re gettin’ da bomb!

When it comes to a tried and true superfood, turmeric may well be the most effective and science-backed nutritional supplement in the world. I won’t go into all the studies and health benefits I’ve shared in the past, but you can read my 3 popular posts here and here and here.
Peoples of the South Asian and Indian cultures has been using honey and turmeric to treat disease for many years. Folk wisdom still retains knowledge of the healing properties of both raw honey and turmeric. Both are great alone, but mixing them together increases their power exponentially, and I will show you why.
Medicinal honey pretty much fell from favor with the age of modern antibiotics in the mid-20th century. Western medicine largely poo-poo’d it as a “worthless but harmless substance“. But now we know that Manuka honey, produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the Manuka tree, is one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey in the world. (Frontiers in Microbiology study)
Unique Manuka Factor (UMF)
In the early 1980’s, Manuka was discovered to have a noticeably greater level of enzymes than regular raw honey. Those enzymes create a natural form of hydrogen peroxide that serves as an antibacterial – with properties that aren’t common in other types of honey.
These extra enzymes are referred to as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) – which is nothing more than a global standard that helps to both identify and measure the antibacterial strength of Manuka. The UMF also guarantees that the honey contains medicinal qualities.
Having both this natural hydrogen peroxide quality in addition to the natural UMF that that combine together to make it incredibly effective.
Proven Manuka Honey Health Benefits
There are 7 distinct benefits of Manuka honey. The studies are sourced here. They include:
1. Helps with SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), Low Stomach Acid, Acid Reflux (source)
2. May Help Treat Acne and Eczema (Most people claim that applying honey on affected area for a few minutes and then washing off usually does the trick. Repeat this every or every other day for the best results). (source)
3. Combats Staph Infections (MRSA) Manuka honey down-regulates the most potent genes of the MRSA bacteria. (source)(source)
4. Prevents Tooth Decay and Gingivitis ( also causes a 35 percent decrease in plaque, but it led to a 35 percent reduction in bleeding). (source)
5. Aids IBS and IBD Treatment (source)
6. Improves Sore Throats and Immunity (stops the growth of sore throat-causing Strep bacteria) (source), and it increases cytokines that fight strep and others in chronic wounds (source).
7. Improves Sleep (source)
Other types of honey also produce antimicrobial levels of hydrogen peroxide when glucose oxidase (an enzyme incorporated into honey by bees) reacts with glucose and oxygen molecules in water. So, when honey is used as a wound dressing it draws moisture from the tissues, and this reacts to produce hydrogen peroxide, clearing the wound of infection.
Honey IS better than cough medicine Dextromethorphan (DM)
Are we so inundated with medicines and drugs that are pushed on us, we are forgetting how amazing natural God-given foods are!
Not only is this a safe and effective antibiotic, but one very interesting study by JAMA Pediatrics (the mouthpiece for U.S. pediatricians) showed real honey was more effective than common cough medicine such as Robitussin DM (dextromethorphan) for reducing night time coughs of children, improving their sleep (and their parents’).
Let’s skip the side effects and reconnect with the gifts we already have!
Manuka honey wasn’t used specifically, but since it is an even more powerful antimicrobial than regular honey, it likely would give even better results!
Not so great for children.

Powerful Turmeric – Manuka Honey Recipe
Yes only two, pure ingredients!
Here is how you can make and use it:
When you get the first symptoms of a cold, flu or strep throat, make the Turmeric – Honey mixture.

Ingredients:
• 4 oz. (~20 tsp.) of Manuka honey or raw honey—>To make it super easy, I don’t measure but use a bit under half a of an 8 oz. jar (or ~4 oz.) to make my batch. (We use Trader Joe’s (UMF 10+). You can purchase a higher UMF here).
• 2 slightly mounded TBSPs of turmeric powder
• 1/4 tsp fresh black pepper (even a little pinch of blk pepper – 1/20th of a tsp – significantly boosts absorption.)
• 1-2 TBSP of virgin coconut oil (totally optional) (antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal as well)(will be a liquid at 76 degrees and above)
• (optional) adding cinnamon increases the overall power of this mixture!
Directions:
Carefully stir turmeric and black pepper (and optional cinnamon) into 4 oz. (20 tsp.) of Manuka honey, mix well and place the Golden Honey mixture in a glass container with lid. You can make more or less depending in your needs by following this conversion table.
Dosage:
With the first symptoms of colds and flu:
Day 1 – Take ½ tsp. every hour during the day.
Day 2 – Take ½ tsp. every two hours during the day.
Day 3 – Take ½ tsp. three times a day.
Hold the turmeric-honey mixture in the mouth until it is completely dissolved.
Storage of Manuka Honey
Due to honey’s potential to store forever, it will keep in a glass jar indefinitely. Everything in this recipe is antibacterial. I keep it covered, though, to keep dust, etc. out!
The amounts don’t have to be specific as neither turmeric or honey have toxicity. Do not rinse with anything for several minutes.
Try adding it to coconut milk or tea and gargling with it.

“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” ~Psalm 103: 2-5

WOW! What a healthy alternative for combating a cold and sore throat.
Jacqueline
I hope you try it, Charlotte! It really is healthy and it works like a cold medicine! Blessings to you today 😀 Hugs!
Qunol
This recipe is a great idea! Love that you suggested using coconut oil to make it more absorbable! Thank you!
Janette
Just wondering if you can use regular raw honey in place of the Manuka honey?
Jacqueline
Yes, Janette, I would imagine you could but it would need to be high quality, never heated. Manuka just has very high production of hydrogen peroxide. I cover this in the article. The Trader Joe’s 10+
is very inexpensive but it is only 8.8 oz. The study on honey being better than dextromethorpan for coughs and respiratory issues was done with buckwheat honey.
I hope that helps 😀
Jill York
I LOVE your articles. They are so informative! And this is a fabulous must-try recipe!!
Jacqueline
Thank you, Jill! It is my pleasure, friend!
Blessings! J
Laura
Would the dosage be the same for small children?
Jacqueline
Hi, Laura! I think it would be fine, but you could cut back by a 1/4. Also, there is no toxicity for turmeric ever after 8,000mg (8gms) in studies.
You do not want to leave it on his teeth, though, after 5 minutes or so, so have your child swish and swallow. Blessings! J
Rebecca Walker
How would you use this to treat eczema? If I make the recipe, is it something I can rub on it?
Jacqueline
Hi, Rebecca! It certainly could help, and it would be pretty messy unless it is a small area. You would have to cover it. I do know of something else that would get to the cause and is relatively inexpensive in its cost benefit ratio! Let me know if you want me to delve into that with you! <3 ~J
Vicky Latorre
Hello, thank you so much for this amazing information. I have been trying stay away from antibiotic since i found out how hard is to grow good bacteria back. i was wondering if you could tell me the difference i the 10+ number since i saw online the are different numbers. Is it higher better? Thanks again.
Jacqueline
Yes, Vicky, the higher the number, the better, but I don’t know HOW much better. I did find this: https://manukahoneyorganic.com/what-is-umf/
I hope that helps!! And I am praying for you!!! Have you heard about TRS? It can help and will not harm the good bacteria, but remove the metals and fluoride and waste from medications and vaccines that actually feed viruses, bacteria and fungi. This post will help you understand the product a little and then we can talk if you want me to invite you to the closed TRS FB group so you cans see for yourself! https://deeprootsathome.com/avalyns-story-how-trs-a-safe-heavy-metal-detox-can-help-you-and-your-child/

Jacqueline
Thank you, Claire! I totally agree with these, and in my opinion, a tie for #3 would be dandelion!
Susan
Thank you so much for this information! Questions…What is the measurement if adding cinnamon to this recipe? And does the mixture need to be kept in the refrigerator?
Jacqueline
Hi, Susan! No need to refrigerate! If adding cinnamon, you could start with 1/2 teaspoon and see if you would like more! Just add to suit your taste buds!
lbs to kg
Kg to lbs converter is a very smart and convenient system of formulas that is able to convert any value of kilograms to pounds and another way around. The basic idea of such a solution is to make people’s life easier and do not bother them with hard calculations.

Great articel, please subsrcibe me to your email list
thank you
Jacqueline
Steven, I apologize, but I am not able to sign others up. You will need to do that with your email. ~J
Sandy
Would this be helpful for a cat bite puncture wound on my wrist that is showing signs of infection (pain and swelling)? I just tried some oregano oil, but was wondering what else I could take instead of antibiotics. Could the honey/turmeric be applied externally too? Thank you so much for all the wonderful information you provide!
Jacqueline
Sandy, yes, it would help under a bandage, and also consider silver as discussed in this post, both internally and topically: https://deeprootsathome.com/can-antibiotics-make-us-aggressive-study-says-yes-and-solution/
I am praying for you now,
Sending peace,
Jacque
Sandy
Jacque, you are such a dear. Thank you! I think I can feel the effect of your prayers already. Many blessings to you!

I found this great resource on how to decide which manuka honey you should buy based on how you plan to use it. It explains the rating system in simple terms. Very helpful! http://manukamebetter.com/how-to-choose-manuka-honey/
Jacqueline
Marcia, that you for sharing that here. I hope to be able to dig in and read soon!
